Thread: Possible Danger: City collapse/cascade of lost citizens

I'd been thinking about this... consider this when you have citizens.

Not sure how many city ranks you can lose at once.

Suppose you've grown to rank 4 and gotten 55 citizens.

Setup: 20 people in the rank 1 center. 15 people in the rank 2 ring, 15 people in the rank 3 ring, 15 people in the rank 4 ring.

Now suppose you lose 1 person (or more) from the rank 1 center of you're city.

You're population drops to 54, you drop to rank 3. The radius of control tightens and you lose the 15 people in rank 4 ring. Population drops to 39.

There are senarios where you'd lose everyone in outside of the rank 1 center of your city.

Losing 2 ranks at once would be enough to destroy your highest ranked city structures, since you can only gain back 1 rank/week.

Just be warned if you havea high population density in your outer city rings....

Good point. I was going to encourage people to move out of the center to the edge so we were more spread out. I will have to reconsider that.

I think you shouldnt be demoted if you dont meet weeks limit. You just simply dont get upgraded. We have 25 set up with around 10 still yet to set up. So we get villiage, get to rank 3... then... if we dont get to rank four we lose our rank 3 down to two? When we have say 45 players and meet rank 3 req. I mean guilds that don number 55 or more unless they group with another 30+ guild are screwed sorta. I think you should just be able to keep rank or at least once caps are lifted... I guess it makes sense with caps in place but owning a city to me isn't just about getting 55+ citizens. Basically Devs dont want small cities they want every city forced to be top level.

But besides that, this is a problem, as you can easily drop many ranks that way but I think you ONLY drop oen rank at a time? that would solve it otherwise it's stupid and needs to be fixed.

as I understand it, your city will not be demoted until the FOLLOWING week after the first vote where you dont have enough citizens, ie...

you loose a citizen wednesday, vote is on thursday. your city will not be demoted until the next voting cycle, giving you a week to add new citizens back

If true, that's great news I didn't mean to do a sky is falling thing, just a what-if scenario.

Well to add to that, I'm pretty sure its written somewhere that you only demote at 1 rank per week as well isnt it?

Okay you really need to think about this how could that even happon you need to fit the houses into the space givin to begin with you need the first 20 in the first place then so on and so on

I understand what you're saying... to achieve rank 4 you need all your citizens within the 3rd ring, if you lost your rank 4 then everyone would still be in rank 3 ring.

But people move their houses.

Right now I bet most city's 'cores' are jammed with upwards of 25 houses (even heard of 37 within one). Cities are doing this to maximize xp the first week and get a good jump.

This means they're all packed in, wall to wall, like sardines. As the city grows I'd expect alot of people to move thier homes to outer areas. I have alot of citizens itching to get out of the cluster and get some space.

I'm personally going to discourage building homes in the outer ring, at least until things are firmly solidified.

OLD POST BUMP...

I'm bumping this since there is a big chance that cities (even those that never used cross-server trades) will lose citizens.

rank loss cascade : You lose citizens, lose a rank which reduces radius, which leaves citizens outside the city so they're lost as citizens, which causes you to drop a rank... etc.

My city moved citizens out of the Rank 1 ring to make room for a shuttleport and garden...

This may sound stupid - but all you'd have to do is move someone from the outside ring into the center ring...

a city would have alple enough warning before it would decrease in size .. I watch my city's population like a hawk... and move people as necessary. We lack buildable land space - so for our first rank increment we had to pile everyone into small naboo style 2s, and tear down some medium / larges - until the rank increment takes place...
