We use the sponsorship process, too. Currently, only the guild leader, me (the 2nd-in-command), and our previous guild leader are the only ones with the ability to sponsor folks. We have about 15 people, so we're probably a bit overdue for another officer. Our leader is the only one who can accept new members. Usually, the members have to do an interview with one of the three of us as well as separate interview with the leader to be considered. Before we bring people on, we have them join us on a guild event (either an RP patrol or a guildhunt).

But anyway, we've made one mistaketwo times when it comes recruitment: Bringing people on too quickly. The first time, we brought on two friends of our old leader without really going through the process. Well, our guild wasn't for them. They weren't having fun and eventually left. They even switched factions on us. The second time, we had a good person who went well with the group, so we brought her on. Well, having the ISB tags got in the way of how other RPers treated her, so she quit VERY quickly. If we had taken enough time before bringing her on, she (and us) would have seen that being guilded was going to get in the way. Luckily, we've been wiser lately and have headed some of this stuff off at the pass. Typically, we take a VERY long time to bring people on, so these mistakes were reactions to our normal way of doing things.

Eventually, as we grow larger, we're going to have guild chapters for different regions/planets. Each chapter will have its own recruiting powers and hiearchy. But our leader will still have the ability to veto those decisions.
