Opinion : This game is awesome! Welcome.

Species : Depends on your race. Humans work for any type of character. If you want to play a smart character, Mon Calamari. If you want a tough character, Wookie, Trandoshan, or Zabrak. If you want a character to be a good scout,Bothan. If you want to be a good businessman/artisan, Rodian. But then, any combination of race/profession really works.

Galaxy : Naritus is awesome. It's a relatively small galaxy (while still being HUGE) and it's a good place to learn and meet nicer players... that is, if you avoid Mortis Consortium.

Career : Whatever you feel like. I recommend, whatever you get, mixing some fighting in though. Things can get dangerous if you're not handy with a blaster or your fists.

The game is aweseom. as for opinions... It all depends on what you want to do with the game. read up on the different careers, planets, galaxies (unless you have friends already playing), and species before you decide. Or you can just create a character and decide the rest in game...

My only advice would be NOT to turn on the xp Status meter, WIth it off the "grind" is amillion times less, you can focus on having fun instead of kill xp darn... kill...killl etc etc etc,

Have fun and good luck on your adventures

peace

How do you not turn on the XP Status Meter? Or turn it off, I should say.

advice: Take all the basic professions... ALL. Even if you think 'bah, I'm not going to be an entertainer, that sounds boring', give it a try, many people have been surprised. The only cost to join a profession is 100cr which you'll find very easily doing missions. The other cost is in skill points, but since you can 'forget' them when you need, you can play around with all of them, and once you have defined the path you want to take and you need the skill points, start 'forgetting' those you don't need.

I suggest Bestine in Tatooine to start, it's not huge so there isn't the big drop of framerate you see in the main capital cities, but it's big enough to be very interesting. Missions you take are very close to the city (400m compared to the 1500-2000m you find in the other planets). It's not a good looking planet, just desert all over the place, but it's a great place to start.

Greetings Tusken!

My only advice is:

If you want to bea medic, start as an Artisan and pick up medic laterin the game. It will save you some time and worry with equipment...

Don't hesitate to /tell me in game.

Tuskens,

I've had a TON of fun with my Mon Cal artisan.
I tend to get bored of doing the same thing over and over, so I've got some low level medic and brawler skills to compliment my high level artisan/architect/scout and carbine skills.

My best tip:

The greatest thing about this game is that you can do as much as you want of any profession and get rid of it later if you decide you don't want it.

Regardless of what you think you want to do right now, start your character as an artisan. Even if you want to go combat. Once you get in-game, you can train marksman or brawler very easilly. But if you start with artisan, it will give you the tools that will allow you to survey for minerals and craft yourself the weapon(s) of your choice.
If you do not start with artisan, finding the weapon of your choice can sometimes become a bit of a headache.

Well, I guess if you're a social person and are going to start on Tattooine (like everyone else and his brother), that tip won't make much difference for you.

Otherwise, I say, feel free to get "Novice" in whatever skills you think you might even remotely like to pursue. You can always drop them later.

Wolfling has some of the best advice -- I found out the hard way... It took about a week or so for me to stop trying to "compete". That is really impossible. Only one person will ever be the first to something. I really started to have fun when I branched out a little. It really whet my appetite for adventuring a bit. Some observations...

The crafting professions lend themselves more towards the xp grind than others. I say that because you get extremely small amounts of xp crafting lower level items, those items areextremely difficult -- if not impossible -- to sell, and the various resource issues can sometimes make the game seem like "Resource Wars" instead of Star Wars. Still, you have many "mini-games" while crafting that allow you to expirement and truly learn. I was extremely impressed with how much thought and real experience (not xp)is required to make truly high quality items in any crafting profession. I may not necessarily approve of the power leveling but for some, I can't deny their skill. If you feel more like settling down and running a business, the crafting professions are the way to go. Keep in mind that there were already "Master" elite crafters on the day of release so you can see how that might affect your chances to "make a living" as a crafter. These professions also lend themselves to be more settled. There are already malls and communities of crafters springing up.

The combat professions will give you a bit more access to some of the other rich parts of the game in my opinion. As you get stronger, you can use greater weapons and attacks and that will give you more confidence (and a greater chance of surviving) some of the more interesting parts of the game. Also, the destroy missions could be a decent source of income to go buy all that cool stuff the crafters are making. The combat skills will really be the only way to truly survive in the wild and in the battles. If you want to "quest" and adventure, the combat professions are the way to go.

The entertainment and medical professions I believe are the most social of the game. These professions will rely almost entirely on the welfare of the community (tips) but very often, you can interact will all professions and all type of people in the med centers and cantinas. As in life, the road to Mastery of medicene is pretty tough. Doctors have to learn EVERYTHING in their skill tree to get to an elite rank. Entertainers don't have quite the same resource issues as the doctors but credits are still required for clothing and accessories and you would still find yourself at the mercy of the community when it comes to cash. Still, the idea of "grouping" with a set of musicians and forming a band has some appeal.

I began as an Engineer because even outside the game, I like to make things. I found it was a bit difficult to do well as a 100% Engineer so -- as Wolfling suggested -- I picked up a gun and tweaked some of my stats. Now I find myself having more fun running Destroy missions andplanning for some planet hopping and adventuring. I'm a little disappointed I will not be a Weaponsmith but possibly one day I'll go back to it.

Even with the bugs and the occasional knuckle head, this has been a good experiece for me in my first MMORPG.

Point by point:

The real answer is, what do you WANT to be? If you want to be a scout/marksman, that's cool. If you want to master both, you might consider Bounty Hunter. I would read over the profession boards a little to get a feel for what they entail. Each board has an FAQ stuck to the top of the first page.

Your share of XP is dependant on the percentage of the damage you did to the creature. You can't leech huge amounts of XP in SWG. If you only did 10% of the damage, then you only get 10% of the XP.

Are pistols a good weapon to keep usingor are rifles and what ever the other one is better

Pistols are fast, not very damaging, and short range. Carbines are medium speed and damage and range. Rifles are long range, high damage, VERY low speed. Each have advantages and disadvantages as you go higher in the skill trees and eventually advanced classes.

I'm on the Wanderhome server, and if your char is on the same server, feel free to give me a /tell and I'll help you learn the ropes.

Ooops, as to how to get a house and droid, you buy them from an architect and droid engineer, respectively. Those are character classes, so you would be buying them from another player. 90% of the items in SWG are character created. 99.9% of the best items are character created.

So basically, to get a house and droid, you need money.
