Thread: How to: Change Guild Leaders aka Set Allegiance

As I've been a avid follower of the PA Forum since Player Associations are a very vital part of the game to keep people involved and interested, I've noticed one question coming up over and over again, usually a few times a week. In this thread, I hope to help those who ask these questions so that they can find all the needed information all in one place.

In Staw Wars Galaxies a guild may only have one actual leader in game (though many guilds have Council type structures in game). The purpose of this position is to set permissions allowing other guild members to recruit, guild email, declare war, and kick out other members. From time to time in games people feel the need to move on and sometimes that person is the leader of a guild. When a guild leader chooses to leave the guild a new leader must be choosenand SWG has a built in system to accomplish this.

The following are the steps in which you will need to do to change the guilds leadership:

1. Between the guild members, choose who your new leader will be. The best method I have found to communicate with the entire guild is through Guild Email in game if you have the permissions set in the guild to use it. Let everyone know what has happened and what steps need to be taken to adopt a new leader.

How To: Guild Email. If you have the permissions set up, open your email (Control - E by default) in the To: field simply type the word "guild". This will send a email to the entire guild and allow them to all respond to the person who sent the email.

*Remember: You can only have one actual leader in game despite your leadership structure, so you must choose one individual for this role.

2. Once you have choosen the new leader, to officially place them in the role you will need to have at least 51% of the guild vote for them within the PA Hall using the Guild Management Terminal.

3. To Vote for the Person: Goto the Guild Terminal > Choose Member Management > Find that Persons name and Select > Choose Set Allegiance. It will then switch the Allegiance to that person.

4. Once you have 51% of the membership voted for the new leader, as soon as the next PA Update cycle hits they will be placed in the leadership permission and can begin setting permissions for members just as the old leader did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to be the owner of the PA hall to be leader?

A: No, you do not need to own the hall to be leader. Any member of the guild may place a PA hall and it's guild terminal will tie in with the guild automatically.

Q: When is the PA Update?

A: The original update time is 7 days from the time the guild was originally created. This time fluxuates over time due to server downtime and updates by about 1-2 hours each week, so determining the exact time frame for very old guilds in game will be very difficult. Usually it is best to estimate it will be about 7 days.

Q: What if I don't get 51% by the next update? Do I have to start over?

A: We have conflicting reports on this and have yet to recieve a response from the developers. We have some people who say that no, the votes carry over until a new leader is choosen and those who say it is reset every cycle if you don't get enough. Hopefully we'll get a definitive answer in time for this question.

Q: I am the current guild leader, can I just give the leadership to a person of my choosing?

A: No, unfortunately there is no command to assign leadership to another individual. It should also be noted that a CSR will not be able to assite you in this either,

Q: We have a lot of inactive people and can not get enough of the vote to elect a new leader, what can we do?

A: This answer is a tough one as there are only a few different options. If any one in the guild has the permission to kick members, you will need to kick out the inactive people until you have enough gone to get 51% and vote in the new leader. If no one has the permission to kick and the leader has gone inactive or left the game already, the only option unfortunately is to either keep trying to get the vote, hopeing some of those members will come back, or start a new guild and recruit the current active people. It should be noted that you won't be able to keep the same name or tag in game for the guild if it comes down to that.

Rumors:

There is a rumor that if your leader leaves the guild, that the person with the most votes on the next PA update cycle will be made the leader, regardless of the normal 51% since the leadership position is vacant. It does make sense that it would work this way, but I personally wouldn't recommend trying this route unless it were a last resort. We haven't gotten a answer from the devs on whether this is true or not.

I'm sure in this guide that I've missed some things or not answered all the questions you have. If you have a question that should be added, reply with it below and I will edit this post and add them in to keep an on going guide for us to follow. My hopes for this is to be stickied to the top so all those with these questions can find the answers they seek easily and it cuts down on some of the repetitive posting.

Thanks for your time in reading!

very nice thread!

I was one of the unenlightened many awhile back who asked the very same types of questions. This would have been very helpful.

I just hope people actually read the thread! I plan on doing a few other ones like this with more common issues to hopefully put more information in one place and allow us to focus on other discussions.

Has anyone successfully been able to change guild leaders with set allegiance? I've heard rumors that it's bugged, and our guild has not had any success even though we tried for 3 weeks. Although there's no guarantee that everyone went and did it even though 95% of our guild are active people. Then again, it could be due to the fact that we don't know when our update day is.

Great work on the guide!

It does work if everyone goes and sets it. It is sometimes tough to actually get enough people to do it though. I used it sucessfully in my guild when I moved leadership from one of my accounts to the other.

Moonkat, not if a new leader is adopted before they rejoin. They are only made the guild leader again if the position is still vacant.

We've had tests now that if a few people set allegiance to a new person, then the leader leaves, that person will be made leader without the need for 51% of the guild.

The guild leader removing from the guild changes nothing. If they come back in, they are automatically the guild leader again.

As for larger guilds and as time goes by....most will have this problem. You have over 51% as inactive.... Then it is impossible to change leaders, unless of course you go and boot those inactive accounts. Of course, then and if they do return for JTL, then they will be pissed they find out they were booted for no reason other then in-activity.

The changing of guild leader needs a different format. IMO

I believe the biggest thing that would solve a lot of these problems would be to simply add a /makeguildleader command that the leader can use to give the leadership over to a new person. It would solve all the "My guild leader is leaving" issues. Now the "guild leader went inactive with no notice" would still remain, but there isn't much you can do to make an ungriefable system without requiring a large portion of the guild to choose a new leader.

That just brought a tear to my eye since the SOS is undergoing this type of situation at this moment.

Re: people coming back for JTL and being pissed to find they got kicked form the guild.

Simple solution. Send an email when you kick them. Say, "I'm sorry, the guild was in crisis and we had to elect a new leader. Due to mathmatical concerns, inactive members had to be reomved for the good of the guild. You are welcome to return to us if you so choose."

I think most people would understand that.

And if they don't do you even want them in your guild?
