Thread: Guild Leaders...How do you divide up command?
Mistress of Air (cantina operations)
Mistress of Fire (battle services)
Mistress of Earth (resources procurement for Morale)
Mistress of Force (intelligence operations)
This is what we use, and I basically control everything, but I allow my second-in-command to make all of the same decisions I can (after all, that is why I chose him).
The "officers" are capable of handling many of the small groups as well, but since we are a fairly small PA they are not burdened with that responsibility unless they choose to.
Capo Crimini – The Boss
Capo Bastone – The Second in Command
Contabile – The Financial Advisor (Treasurer) – Reports directly to the Capo Bastone or Capo Crimini
Caporegime – An Underboss – Controls a Family territory and reports directly to the Capo Bastone
Consigliere – An Advisor – Is responsible for establishing relations with other “families” as well as helping the Underbosses run day to day operations
Capodecima – A leader in the Family who oversees many things, including but not limited to “protection” of those who are under the Family’s control (similar to a colonel)
Sgarrista – An officer of the Family (one who is a “made” member of the Family) – (similar to a lieutenant)
Piciotto – An enforcer of the Family – one who has been accepted into the ranks of the Family (similar to a sergeant)
Soldato – A Foot Soldier – An accepted member of the Family
Giovane D’Honore – An associate of the Family – One who has not yet proven their abilities and been completely accepted into the Family
Clan Head
Council Members (up to eight)
Citizens
The Clan Head is perhaps closer to being the Chair in concept. Simply having the title makes people come to me first, so it is elevated in practice and responsibilities.
The Council has the majority of powers that the Head does. Admitting new members, making minor decisions, helping resolve disputes, etc. They all have the capacity to fill in for me should I be unavailable. For major decisions I consult with them, although it may be informally, to get their opinions. Based on those discussions and my own judgement, I make the final ruling.
Our citizens are also our family. I would rather be thought of as their mother, sister, or aunt than the boss-lady. (I cringe everytime someone calls me boss, even if its light-hearted.) Only in a few circumstances will I dictate actions -- such as enforcement of a truce.
While some of us have taken on greater responsibility in order to keep things organized, we're not better than anyone else. We try to resolve differences equitably, or at least come to an understanding.
We don't tolerate griefing or harrasement inside or out of the Clan. We will try to straighten out a member's behavior before taking more drastic actions, as it is more beneficial in the long run (for them and us) if they become cooperative. With a group as large as ours (126 members total), there are bound to be personality conflicts. We can't make people get along, however we do expect them to be civil to one another.
Participation is an area we need work. By nature we are quite individualistic. We provide a home, familiar faces and support, however we do not require nor enforce group activities. In practice there is a core group of players that are active on guildchat and our city. Even if not doing an activity together, guildchat lets us talk and get to know each other.
We're currently doing a guild re-org, and I'm pasting the basic outline that we've come up so far:
(*note*- we're still missing a lot of stuff but it's a rough outline of where we're heading...)

My PA is divided into Houses. There is a Matron (officer) at the head of each house. Each Matron has the authority tofurther divide command within their own house by establishing ranks structures and promotinglesser officers (Mistresses) for various purposes needed by that House.
In addition, each sister is asked to pledge themselves to a primary house depending upon their profession and/or interests in the game.
Here's how it works out, the Mistress titles have been created by the Matrons, not myself:
Matron of Vision (me, PA Leader)
Mistress of Recruitment (recruitment officer)
Matron of War (combat oriented members belong to this house, this house handles pvp alliances and enemies)
Second in Command
Matron of Morale (entertainer/medic house, maintains hospital and cantina)
Mistress of Water (medical center operations)
Mistress of Air (cantina operations)
Mistress of Fire (battle services)
Mistress of Earth (resources procurement for Morale)
Mistress of Force (intelligence operations)
Matron of Commerce (crafters and resource procurement)
Matron of Exploration (scouting hunting and harvesting)

I find our guild is at its best when we are working toward a larger goal that each house can play a part in.
