Thread: Updating the Knowledge Base

The team is updating the Knowledge Base. They need our help! If you are willing to donate a few minutes of your time to this cause, play around with the Knowledge Base a bit to figure out how it works. Ask it any questions you can think of (pistol related or not), and post what the results were. I've already done this for every question in our FAQ.

You can also access the Knowledge Base in-game through the Holocron (ctrl + H), but it has exactly the same content as the html version.

Thank you for kicking off this post Randonb. The Knowledge Base in game is quickly growing to cover more and more topics and provide the most accurate information possible. On a daily basis entries are published to the Knowledge Base and any errors that are located are fixed and published.fficeffice" />

The exciting thing about the Knowledge Base is that the response time for the entries can be so swift. If you locate an error in the Knowledge Base and bring it to your correspondent we can fix it and have the corrected version in game within hours or even minutes of receiving that information. Any gaps in the Knowledge Base can also be quickly filled.

I’ve asked your correspondent to start a thread like this for two reasons. First the Knowledge Base is very important to us, but right now it is under utilized. I’m working with the Correspondents and the Developers to increase awareness for the Knowledge Base. Soon we’ll be changing some things in game to make the Knowledge Base a lot more visible.

That brings me to my second reason for coming to you – information that is as complete and accurate as possible. When the Knowledge Base becomes more prominent it will be vital for it to be as complete and accurate as possible. We have been working internally and with the Correspondent program to comb the Knowledge Base and add new entries. We would really appreciate it if you could point out anything that you find to be in error, out dated, or simply missing. If you think a question needs to be asked that’s not here please post it, or send it directly to your correspondent. We’ll work to get as many into the Knowledge Base as we can.

Thank you for your support and we really hope that you find the Knowledge Base to be a useful source of information. Please keep in mind that the Knowledge Base is intended to provide information about systems and policies but will not provide direct spoilers.

For quick answers to many game play questions, you may want to first reference the knowledge base located in the Holocron Menu. You can do so by selecting the customer service option and then using the knowledge base tab. We have recently added hundreds of new FAQs and answers and more will be added more daily, so give it a try!

No responses? Yikes.

I know a lot of people don't give a hoot about the Knowledge Base. Why should they? It's easy to miss entirely, it's incomplete, and it's outdated. Most people who peruse these boards know everything in it.

But it's getting revamped. The tool itself is just too cool to pass up. In game help in video games has been historically unsatisfactory. SWG aims to change that trend. The more answers people find in the Knowledge Base, the fewer extraneous tickets the CSR team has to deal with. The fewer tickets in the system, the faster the response time is. So even if you are confident that you will never need to know anything more, by helping the Knowledge Base, you help yourself.

I'll sweeten the deal a little more. Don't ask the Knowledge Base anything. Just post questions here, and I'll run them through the Knowledge Base and report the results to CSRDavidF.

Thanks!

I just wanted to stop by and say that we’re very thankful for all of the input we have received from the community. Over the last few weeks the Knowledge Base has seen literally thousands of new entries in every conceivable topic. Many of the best questions have come directly from these forums.

fficeffice" />

If you have not yet taken a look at the Knowledge Base I encourage you to do so. With Publish 7 (currently on ffice:smarttags" />Test Center and coming soon to a server near you) the Knowledge Base will be more visible with some User Interface changes that are going in. We also hope to further revamp the User Interface for the Knowledge Base in the next few publishes following 7.

If you have questions regarding game systems, even if you know the answers to those questions or think they are silly, please either post here or work with your correspondent to get those questions to us. The more information we can put in the Knowledge Base the more useful it will be for all of us. We are also interested in feedback on existing entries from typos to incorrect wording or information. Bring those to your correspondent as well.

Finally I want to stress again that the Knowledge Base is one of the items in Star Wars Galaxy that we can update and modify whenever we choose. If you see that the Knowledge Base doesn’t cover a topic, or covers it poorly, get your correspondent’s attention and we’ll look at it. Changes made to entries are instantly visible in game and on the web site.

The link to the knowledge base out of game is http://station.sony.com/kb or you can find it in game by opening your Holocron (CTL H) and clicking on the Customer Service button in the lower left.

For quick answers to many game play questions, you may want to first reference the knowledge base located in the Holocron Menu. You can do so by selecting the customer service option and then using the knowledge base tab. We have recently added hundreds of new FAQs and answers and more will be added more daily, so give it a try!

OK, I figured I'd give it a try, keeping in with the Pistoleer forum we're in, and focusing on uninformed noob questions. So, I figured, let me ask: "What does dodge do?" This seems a valid quesiton as people may see +Dodge skills but not know exactly how it works.

QUERY: dodge

RESPONSE:

>> EverQuest: What is the dodge skill?

OK, not what I was looking for at all. So, let's try this:

QUERY: melee defense

RESPONSE: Everything but what I wanted.A few articles on faction base defenses but nothing related to melee defense.

One more try:

QUERY: apprentice points

RESPONSE:

>> Star Wars Galaxies: What is apprentice experience?

Yay! One out of three...

What specific information are you looking for in response to this query? Lets work to get something to cover this in there.

QUERY: melee defense

Same as above. Let me know what areas of melee defense were not covered well enough.

Thank you for taking a look. Hopefully we can get you to 3 out of 3 in short order!

Info in the knowledge base should provide a thorough description and, if at all possible, the game logic behind it.

For example:

  • AKB article describing how weapon speed works should include the weapon speed formula, since it's generally public knowledge.

  • Melee Defense (or Ranged Defense, for that matter) -- what does this affect? What is considered a "high" or "low" value? How does it work? (I've read that each point gives a 0.5% chance to avoid such an attack provided the attack already hit you.)

  • Dodge -- same type of info. What does it exactly do? Where in the process of combat does this come in to play?

If I knew a little more of the info I could write up more specifics. I'll try to keep thinking of questions I want answers to. :-)

Thanks! Anything I don't know the answer to I pass up the chain for more info. Sometimes features are deemed "secret" or "spoiler" and I can't release info on them but I definately check for the requests I get. Keep them coming!

Useful, but not nearly as useful as a properly maintained Known Issues website would be to the user community ... Software 101 time, folks. A Known Issues page should include:

1. Description of issue/bug

2. Status of fix

3. Estimated date for completion of fix

4. Known work-arounds for problem

Frankly, with the mountain of systems in the game that do not work as described in documentation (because the system is broken), a Known Issues page would be of a lot more use than an inaccurate and outdated Knowledge Base.

Known Issues is worthless if it is not (1) accurate and (2) timely ... it must be edited and up-to-the-minute accurate.

If you're improving documentation, I would focus your team on a tool used by most dinky little coding shops to improve customer satisfaction, but for some reason ignored by SOE like a redheaded stepchild.

The more bugs you have, the more your product cries for a Known Issues page. Galaxies is screaming for it.

We have excellent programs that we use to track bugs and their status in our system. We are planning on having a Top Known Issues entry in the Knowledge Base going live probably with publish 7. Eventually itmight get its own Tab on a UI to make it more visible but in the short term we will definately be maintaining a document of this type.

Can we possible get the Knowledge base to be specific for the different games on it? I don't like getting a bunch of answers pertaining to everquest when looking for a SWG solution.

In-game the Knowledge Base will only return SWG solutions. On the web do a search for Star Wars Galaxies, then refine your search with what you are looking for.

i know you are just doing your job csrdavidf , but please dont expect enthusiastic feedback from pistoleers . since augast we have been providing the development staff of swg with painstakingly accurate data regarding our specials , defences etc but it seems to have made no difference . almost all of our specials dont work and we are probably the weakest combat class in the game . i would like to see the folowing changes made to knowledge base queries;

if i type pistoleer it should say . " dont bother "

if i type pistoleer specials it should say " /insure all , /burst run , /activate clone"

if i type pistoleer weapons it should say " buy a geo blaster for 5 million and still do less damage per second then a jawa ion"

the way i see it is that if you guys dont intend to fix the profession atleast save others from future disappointment.
