Thansk to the advice here I have now added a republic blaster to the list of pistols I own. Also got several crates of damamge/speed increasing powerups I can use on it and others. Increased my Overcharge 2 shot by nearly double that of my original scout pistol, tasty.

Like folks here have said tho some of the pistols you have to have just cos their cool. As a pistoleer I feel its only right to have a small armoury of all the best ones. Even just for the wall of your house.

Hello, I am just about to achieve enough pistol exp for Novice. Should I then switch to the DX2( I have heard some not so glowing things about it) or stick to my trusty scout blaster? I am hunting for basic combat exp for my next profession. So, I need to kill things.

So, for a novice pistoleer, what is the optimum weapon?

republic blaster

DX2 sucks until you get master speed.

Republic blaster unless you are fighting something with insane energy resists and little acid resists... then you use the DX2...

Same goes for the FWG5 with low heat resists, as long as it doesnt meet either of the previous conditions... but they have to be REALLY low or a vulnerabiliy to bother with the DX2 until master speed. The only reason to use the FWG5 is against vulnerabilitys where you can't do damage with your normal weapons.

Republic Blaster most of the time though.

Edited because I can't spell (twice)

I think the new dx2 with improved ideal range might be nice.....if you can find someone who has made one since last wednesday's patch.

Also, I've seen dx2's with speeds as fast as 1.9, 2.0, 2.1 comparing all the guns in the game, that's not bad....then again at novice any gun is gonna be slow unless it is a FWG becuase if my memory serves me correct, no other weapon goes lower in the speed stat than a FWG.

My advice though, is to carry a gun that does each type of damage......heat, acid, energy, kinetic & stun. At some point you will need to switch out to one of them to be most effective. a lot of the time, having the right type of damage can make a shorter encounter. A pistol that does more damage and/or has more speed sometimes can be obsolete. for example, I fought a nightsister last night and it had 100% resist to heat, acid, energy, blast and 75% to cold, 5% to kinetic and no stun was listed so In that case it's presumed it has no def vs stun. in that situation, no fwg, scout, dx2 or energy weapon would have did any good.only kinetic or stun based attacks would have been effective. I ran into some mobs that are 100% to stun and kinetic also, but not frequently.

Now I know your only a novice and more than likely won't be hunting on dathimor anytime soon by yourself or with a small group. But to a lesser degree there are other mobs in the game that have similar resist to damage types. Just on a slightly lesser degree like 60% across the board with a couple of lower resist around 5 - 15% and maybe 1 or 2 vulnerabilities which most likely will include acid.

My recommendation is to get 1 each of the following when you get the money.

Republic Blaster - energy damageand light armor peircing

FWG - heat damage

Striker - kinetic damage(a very good one)

Tangle - stun damage(again a very good one)

DX2 - acid damage and light armor peircing

Scout blaster is nice when your fighting unarmored mobs. I actually used a scout until I got the dx2 certification. Then when I went to the advanced planets, I found that the scoutwasn't helping me any so I switched to use of all of the above guns. I've rarely seen a very good SR-Combat pistol (which has light armor peircing also) but I did have a very powerful one back in the early days of the game......I broke it trying to repair it....I used too many overcharge shots with it.... used to take down Storm Troopers pretty well with it too.

Agree with the above. Junk the Scout ( TBH I've allways used a republic instead of a scout and it really is a much better gun due to it's AP1 ) and get a range so you can chop and change depending on the target. DX2 is probably the most versatile as many mobs are acid vulnerable. FWG is quite usefull for the same reason. Republic is great for getting a sniping shot in at 64m. For example if your doing PvP or a PvE battle where xp is less of a consideration and thus use bleeds. Bleed it at 64m (or where U want max XP just get those first health shots in) with the republic then at 30m swap to a DX2/FWG etc. depending on the resists of the target.

I got a crate of DX2's specially named (so I know it was made post-patch).

I know it is a waste of $, but I have never had a successful weapon repair ... so I just buy the guns.

I havnt used a republic blaster yet - however, I do switch between my damaged sliced FWG and my damage sliced DX2 (post pub 6). Overall, I would say that the damage is about equal against unarmoured targets (the ap1 on the DX2 makes up for its slightly slower speed!). Of course, if I'm fighting something with a resistance to one type, then the other weapon wins the day! Or, if I'm fighting something with light armour, then the DX2 wins!
