I just grinded my way up the techniques line so that I could grind smuggler faster, in hopes that fan shot would make my grind much easier. So, when i got fanshot, I eagerly rushed on to a piket plains walker mission, only to realize that fanshot was only hitting one target, and that i could kill the piket much faster with health shot 1 and 2. Is fanshot as good as ive heard? Am i doing something wrong?

from what i have seen, fan shot is a bit buggy, but very effective when it does work. it also depends on the range you are from your target. (someone correct me if i'm wrong on this) since it is a cone shaped attack the farther back the more mobs you in within pistol range

Yes, it forms a 45-degree-angle cone of fire in front of you. It hits other targets for me, but remember that for every shot, you roll an accuracy-vs-defense check, so you might hit one target, but miss all the others. I've never heard of Fan Shot being buggy. It's one of our most reliable attacks. The reason HS2 may be faster is because Fan Shot is random-pool targetting, whereas HS2 only attacks Health. Also, Fan Shot has a much higher delay mod than HS2, so you'll be firing Fan Shot a lot slower than you will be firing HS2. Add to all that the fact that you probably don't have all the accuracy mods that a Master Pistoleer does, you're going to miss a fair bit with Fan Shot. For grinding, I've always found HS2 to be more effective than FanShot, personally.

It's been my experience that /fanshot has been one of our few working specials. It shouldn't be hitting just one unless 1 of 2 things are happening:
1. Mobs are outside the cone (lag could be an issue, showing the mob in the cone when in fact they are not)
2. The fanshot is "missing" most of the other mobs. This can occur 1 of 2 ways:
a. You actually miss the other mobs in the AOE, meaning the shot does not hit them, but does hit the mob you have targeted.
b. You "hit" themobs in the AOEbut the mob takes no damage.
Normally it's B - you will see words like 'left arm hit+' or 'right leg hit+' but they take no damage in these pools.

that explains the reports i had heard of buggy, ie 12 mobs oin front of you you may or may not hit depending on def vs your acc.
and i would agree hs2 would be a good grind up to master especially for accuracey

I would use fanshot if it targeted one pool, but it takes 3 times as long to kill something because of the random pools.

The only thing I really use fanshot for is to shoot the lair while I am shooting the mob. Reason being that the only thing that I can manage to make Fanshot do is shoot in a straight lime, not a fan shape...I shoot the mob in front of me and whatever is behind it...so sometimes it is a bad thing, because I get all kinds of adds if the mob moves in front of something that isnt already agro'd. Of course, since I got Last Ditch, I dont use anything but that

Works great as long as you are not taking on high end mobs, otherwise it spells insta-aggro/death.

Try using it on a squad of Imps and see how fast they fall
Killed 12 Imp ST's in less than 2 minutes.
You just have to keep your targets in the cone and it's best used against NPC's with ranged weapons.

fan shot is my favorite pistoleer special. but if mobs are point blank with you, it wont hit more than 1.
To use it the best way, get as many mobs as you can defensivly handle (so what, 5 or 6+) and run in a straight line directly away from them while spamming fan shot. They will all follow in a small clump and you will tag them all guaranteed. Then once you ran about 100m or however far you like, turn and run directly towards them, pass them, and run 100m in that direction while fan shotting. Just keep running back and forth along the same path and you will shred anything. Dont worry that its random ham, because if you are hitting 5+ mobs or whatever, they will all drop so fast you'll laugh. Also I believe it can hit the same mob more than once, but thats not something to count on.
In closing, fan shot is best pistoleer shot for pve in my opinion. For you to accidntally aggro something by fan shotting it, its your own fault for fighing so close to mobs that you cant handle anyways. When i would grind with fan shot, id aggro anything i could. I also used it to farm reb faction bases and kill all the reb NPCs within a very short time. Later ill post a screenie and show you what i mean.

Definately i ues it at imperial starports to drop imp ST's and their friends, imp piolts dark troopers etc etc, dark ST's normally need a touch of last ditch to get the point.
