Thread: Back from the Combat Balance Summit

As you most likely guessed, when I was "out of town" I was in fact in Austin, TX at the Summit. They didn't want any party crashers.

Holy cow. You know how everything we ever ask is answered with "Combat Balance?" Well, it's true. Big changes, and lots of them. Developers and correspondents alike are very excited, but nervous because of the scope of the changes. We went through the documents point by point and discussed them. We held a Q&A on each section, and it's all on tape so they can review our comments in detail (in addition to further discussion on the boards, where we will be equipped with feedback from you guys).

I definitely got the impression that this wasn't simply for educating the correspondents about the Combat Revamp. They had to run it by us in person and see our reactions. As it turns out, it was pretty much all positive. Why wouldn't it? It came from the discussions found every day on the boards! We had a couple of objections of course, and we're going to work through them. It was clear that they wanted to find solutions. They really pressed us for honesty, and didn't want us to simply sit there and kiss ass at all.

"Alright, we get it, but what about Pistoleer?"

Combat is getting revamped, and Pistoleer right along with it. I kept a particularly watchful eye on our attacks and making sure they were useful. If it isn't useful, it will either be changed or removed (which is fine, so long as we have a fun-to-use skill set). Every profession (including Pistoleer) has a role, which is positively essential for combat to be fun, engaging, and tactical in nature.

"Sounds great. Spill the beans, mister."

At this time, I cannot. he reason is a very good one: if we released partial information when you haven't seen the complete documents for yourselves, you would have more questions than answers. We don't want any aspects blown out of proportion prematurely. That comes later. "So release everything!" you say. Well, that's the plan. The docs are being worked on and will start to be trickled out a week from Monday (Sept 6th). If "trickled out" sounds completely contradictory to what I just said, it is. It is still better for you to read the docs (which are broken up by category) one by one however, rather than get a smattering of bullet points from all over the place.

Got any dirt?

Well, a little. JEST3R called StGabriel a "**edit**ing idiot," and Vandessa said she "likes it rough" (taken out of context). JEST3R also put on a pair of hawtpants, thankfully over his jeans. We all drank substantial amounts of booze. To take something else out of context for fun and enjoyment, Thunderheart said he "didn't want to put a piece of nasty ass in his mouth."

To summarize, the plan is exciting. However, we have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks and months. It is a very big deal. It isn't perfect and it isn't going to be perfect for everybody when it gets released. Many people will find themselves changing professions, but they will have more fun once they do so. We are working diligently to make sure people have roles that they find close to what they asked for, but some people will have to be a little flexible to make everything fit. In some cases, they will find that another profession they haven't tried before is more attractive to them.

There is going to be a lot of hard work, but Ifeelthat this is a tremendous step in the right direction for Star Wars Galaxies. Of course, I'm counting on you to make up your minds for yourselves.

To back up what Randonb is saying, looking back on many of the changes to the game over the past few months that didn't make any sense to players...

They make sense.

That is sort of an example of the partial information thing. With only partial information, they don't make much sense and seem odd or a waste. With all the information, they suddenly make sense.

There is likely to be some hashing things out between the devs and corrs over the next week. Being able to meet face to face really helped get everyone on the same page much faster than forums could have, and we can move on to the real issues we see in the details instead of being confused about what the details mean. You have some very good men and women on your side representing the players.

I'm glad you're excited. It restores a little of my faith in THEM to know they have plans you like. I can't wait to see these docs and get a little excited m'self.

so, do the Corrs personalities reflect the attitudes on their boards? The JEST3R comment sounds bombastic, and his board can get that way. I guess what I'm askin is sorta a "Dogs that look like their owners" thing, with a twist

I've already posted one on the GCW and DE forums. And Pappi responded to my thread on the GCW forum with a pic of her own.

Expect to see the pictures start filtering in for a few days. Can't give it all at once, better to leave people guessing and letting their imaginations run wild.

I'm planning to write a pictographic coverage of the stuff not directly CB related. Even JEST3R telling a story if I can stitch the bits of video I have together to resemble a complete enough story.

It isn't really fair to only mention that one quote from JEST3R. He's more than capable of having real conversations, in fact there were several, but he isn't afraid to call you a "**edit**ing idiot" to you face when he gets riled up. That argument wasactually pretty asinine, and the difference in opinion more philosophical than anything that could be measured. There wasn't much else to say after a point than "you're way of thinking about this is stupid."

But yeah, we're all pretty much exactly like our communities, both on the correspondent boards and in person. Part of that is that we migrated to certain positions based on personality, and part of it was TH's selection process.

I didn't bring a camera (doh!) but I'm going to peruse photos of correspondents who did and post them on Imagedump for you all.

Hello All:

Just a quick question on terminology. Combat Balance vs. Combat Revamp. I got it in my head that Combat Revamp is the sweeping overhaul of the combat system that is to come after JtL and the Combat Balance is something that is going to be applied before JtL to keep me from cancelling my subcription.

What I'd like to know is, is there a CB and a CR? Am I right about there placement on either side of JtL? Was the summit for the soon to be made changes or the far off no definite date, after JtL changes.

Any light that can be shed on this would be appreciated.
