Thread: Ranged damage mitigation vs. Ranged Defense

What is the difference? As the descriptions on the game skill window are rather vague. I noticed this while browsing proff trees. Fencers get rather high ranged damage defense, as well as melee defence, while we get rather limited melee defence but no ranged defense unless we have the combat support boxes from marksman.

So, what are the differences between ranged damage mitigation and ranged defense?

defense will determine how hard you are to hit by melee and ranged weapons. if you have alot of ranged defense, ranged attackers will have a hard time hitting you, and same with melee defense.

mitigation reduces the damage you receive per shot. it doesnt make you harder to hit, it just lessens the damage you get when you are hit. i think ranged mitigation 3 cuts all ranged damage you get in half.

and there was much rejoicing...

We better get ranged defense additions with this next publish then. Doesn't makse sense for fencers to have more than us. Gunfighters should be the ones with the skills to dodge bullets, or blaster bolts in this case. And don't say dodge is good enough because fencers have dodge too.

Actually mitigation reduces the maximum damage done by your pvp opponent (min damage is not affected). Mitigation results in a percentage of your enemies weapon's range (max-min+1) subtracted from the max. Make Sense? Ranged mitigated 3 will reduce 60% of your enemies range off the max.

There are a couple of threads in "Links to Important Pistoleer Threads" (stickied at top) that explain Damage Mitigation in detail.

Simply put, damage mitigation looks at the range of damage in the weapon hitting you. For example, 50-100. It then reduces this range by a given percentage, based upon the degree of mitigation that you have attained (level 1-3, placed at varying points on the tree). It doesn't adjust the minimum damage, only the maximum.

Ranged Damage Mitigation 3 (60% reduction)would lower a damage range of 50-100 to 50-70.

It would lower the damage range of a 50-200 weapon to 50-110.

So as you can see, it stabilizes some of the crazy damage ranges that we have seen, such as in krayt weapons. This places a greatervalueon weapons with a high minimum damage.

If your asking which is better to have... Ranged Defense by far, if they cant hit you then you really dont need mitigation now do you

BasicallyI am just looking for your opinions on whether it would be better to have more Ranged Mitigation or more Ranged Defense. With the templates I'm looking into creating I could get Ranged Mit. 2 with less Ranged Defense or vice versa. I'm just afraid that my template would still leave me very vulnerable to ranged attack even with a high defense so I was thinking about lowering the max damage that could be dealt to me by giving up some of that defense. Just curious about your thoughts.

Also, how important are Defense vs. Stun, Blind and Intimidate in PvE?

Thanks.

You can only get mitigation for the profession...ie ranged mitigation won't do anything if you are holding a power hammer.

hrm.. is that true ?

I always thought it solely depended on the weapon you are being attacked by.

If you get shot ranged mitigation kicks in

If you get whacked Melee mitigation kicks in

No, if you are holding a pistol as a master pistoleer you get ranged mitigation 3, if you're holding a rifle at rifleman x2xx you get ranged mitigation 2, if you're holding a stun baton at master fencer you get melee mitigation 3 and if you're TKA x1xx you get melee mitigation 1.

They are all extremely important, with stun or blind on you your sword is greatly downgraded and same with intimidate but anyone who is anyone can land an intimidate on you in max 3 tries.

Are u sure about that? any prof? i tested it myself a few weeks ago with a friend of mine...my build was master fencer/swords/pistoleer 1043 with novice med and with an 2-handed weapon equiped his shots didn´t hurt that much as they do nowbeing master brawler/swords/tka....even havin now higher 2h-toughness...so all i can say is that migration don´t care about the weapon u have equiped...imo it works close to state or ranged/melee defense witchworks no matter what weapon u are holding...b/c tested master fencer and fencer 4440...both leaves u with the same +32 toughness...gotquiet the same damage...if migration is hooked up with the weapon and level of mastering i should got more damage after droping fencer to 4440....imo getting more damage on lower level of mastering a melee-prof arerelated tolower toughness...

just my 2cents
