Remember pointblankarea? I did not. Well, "crappy noob stuff" is what I remember. You get it with Novice Marksman.
Yes, I got poinblankarea2 when I reached 4000. Its also crappy.
Well, guess what? pointblankarea2 is broken, and pointblankarea1 outshines FanShot in some cases.
To try the wonder of pointblankarea1, try this:
Pick a Huurton Huntress mission (about 8k) on Dantoine. Start by shooting at their lair for 30 sec or so, let them heal it for awhile. This spawns a few extra huurtons. Wait until you are completely surrounded.
Now when you targeted the lair, start to spam pointblankarea1 with the lair targeted (use geo blaster if you dont want to harm the lair).
When you are done, shoot the lair for another 'refill' and once you got a new bunch of huurton's around you, repeat.

Yup, when I took up pistoleer again I just slapped on some Ubese, sucked some brandy and did PBA1 up to fanshot. PBA1 is also excellent for Commandos levelling with flamer.
Personally I'd actually use PBA2 and MTPS if they actually worked for when you get surrounded.

I usually target a lair from about 40-50m out and Fan Shot it until I'm surrounded. Sometimes the critters will die just trying to get to me, or will make the mistake of running to the lair to heal it.
Only after I'm surrounded and have put a few Health Shot 2's into targets to get them all bleeding do I switch to Point Blank Area 1, but even so it's sometimes faster to just concentrate on targeting individual health pools to take targets down quickly.

When attcking a group, I will use Fan Shot till they all surround me then switch to PA1, you wanna use Fan Shot when you can against Multiple targets because it does alot more damage. But once the surround you and are no longer in the cone area for Fan Shot, you switch to PA1 so you can hit all of them.

pba1 dont replace fanshot. Its just better to use when you are surrounded with a large horde of misc creatures.
The lesser damage is made up with the ability to hit a large number of creatures at once, without focus,including a lair. This offers some semi-afk grinding for thoose that enjoys that.
Its especially useful against large creatures such as Piket or Bol since its difficult to run away from them far enough to hitin acone.
I have a macro now that fires 15 pointblankarea shots at once. I press it whenever I feel like I need to weaken a large horde of creatures.
I have problems with fast animals and large animals, since cone's dont work well against them.

I sometimes use it for grinding xp and it works well unless your opponents are to tough. Typically I use this method if I grind something that is medium hard and thatI also harvest for meat. Not like spamming area attacks when grinding a melee proffession but still nice.

oh pba1 shoots in a cone around u? i thought it did the same as fanshot just less damage.

It basicly hits everything within 10m from you, regardless direction. No need for aiming.

Unless the Dev's have changed it recently :
If you are grinding..... You dont get any experience fro the damage of a DOT! 
EG : Health shot 2, Health bleed from a mod. republic blaster.....
Best bet for high XP I've found is Fan Shot till they get close then PBA1.
Scatter pistols are Acid damage,and Hurton Huntresses are vuln. to Acid!
Get in a large solo grp and pick the mission up for 7.5k on Dant.
15 Hurton Huntresses per Lair = 70 - 75k XP per mission!

I use PBA1 when there are 5 or more monsters nearby, that assures I do more damage with PBA1 than with FanShot.
Huurton Huntress dont give me as much xp as Huurton Stalkers, which is killed about as easy.
With the heaps of money I have, grinding with Geo Blaster is not difficult.
Running from Huurtons to be able to FanShot them nice, is difficult, if not impossible.

Uhm. In what way?
The ones ive seen had 25% vs everything and was poisonous and took forever to kill, and gave as much xp as a huurton stalker that is a pushover that cannot even harm me
