your combat level shows on your ham bar. the combat level of anybody or any thing you target shows up on their ham bar.
the combat level was originally called the challenge level/rating, and was just an indication of relative strength. Now the Combat Level has an effect on accuracy and a huge effect on damage in PvE (not sure about PvP.)

If you didn't master marksman and are past the Scout Blaster definitely pick up a Striker pistol it is only slightly weaker than the Metal DL 44 in the MM box. You need to be CL 14 and up to use it.

The downgrade does suck.
I been using pistols since it went live and just for the Proton Carbine... Short story short, why ever use pistols?
One answer to that is that your speed and accuracy is going to be better with a pistol equipped, if you don't have any carbineer skills (because your Pistol Speed and Pistol Accurancy mods won't apply when you have a carbine equipped). So you could have higherdamage stats on your carbine, but hit more often with a pistol.
That's just theoretically speaking--I haven't actually looked at the numbers with the Proton Carbine.

You would think.
But the DPS is higher on the carbine than my pistols. Literally, the stats are far lower both speed and acc wise but in use I don't notice any difference.

That's cool--I may have to pick me up one of those carbines.

Really nice chart man ... I have a question ... fromthe chart, I see that as a Novice Pistoleer, I now have a Striker Pistol Cert but howwould I know that if I did not have this chart as a reference? I have looked in the Skills Window and can't find anything. I did try a search of the forums but kept getting the message "too many searches in progress" or something like that ...

This chart is all wrong now as far as weapon certifications goes as things have changed since this was true on Test Centre.
This thread details the new weapon certifications.
