I don't see this as being bugged....it's actually logical in a sense and realistic.
This special along with many other specials in the game that hit multiple targets is completely random. You are not suppose to hit everything in the cone every time. Look at it like this. even when a grenade goes off in real life the shrapnel can completely miss you even though you may be standing a foot away from the grenade. Why? because it comes out random in random directions.....there is always a gap inbetween somewhere. Fanshot is similar to that each time you shoot it.
Don't expect that everytime you shoot fanshot and targets are in the AOE that they all will get hit and/or take damage. You can even shoot something with any other shot and sometimes see in the combat window that you shot so and so for whatever amount of damage but the shot missed. Same thing happens when enemies shoot us....the damage does not always take but is rare and shouldn't be that much of a concern. Another thing....I don't know about anyone else but I really can't tell who got hit and where they got hit when I use fanshot on a bunched up mob. Sure I see arm hit, head it, chest....blah blah blah. But who got hit in the head, who got hit in the chest....There are just too many numbers and letters floating overhead to know what's really going on most of the time.....
Also the shots and action sometimes happen so fast that I don't think the combat window can keep up sometimes. IF I shoot 10 fanshots hit or miss my combat window never ever shows a message for each shot.....they are just too **edit** fast (as a master that is).
Just remember that fanshot and other AOE attacks only have a chance to hit other targets in it's AOE. As far as enemies getting hit by the shot and still have full HAM, I've never seen it happen where only the targeted enemy takes damage and all the others in the AOE don't. I have seen 1 or 2 not get damaged at all though.....I just look at it as if they were standing behind the targeted enemy.....the shots won't go through the target and hit the enemy directly behind him....therefore the enemy directly behind the targeted enemy should not take any damage at all in this case. we are firing lasers not bullets.....bullet can potentially go through 2 targets lined up.....I've never heard of blasters shooting through 2 targets.....the shot is usually absorbed by the first target....leaving anything behind undamaged.
This is just how I look at it and I have no problem with fanshot at all....It works fine for me. Giving the speed, power of the shots and effectiveness.....I'm happy with it....doesn't need a change as far as I'm concerned.
We should be more focused on the other specials that don't work at all instead of one of our best ones. Everything will never be 100% perfect...nothing is and we should accept the fact that the special will not be what everyone wants it to be.....it will be what it is and that's that.
well, the problem is that there is spam above the heads of the other mobs in the area (see original post) so according to that I am hitting. It's the same spam you get when you have a nice batch of closeley grouped mobs and you're tearin it up.... except they don't take any damage.
I think the first reply is the accurate one: it IS bugged, and the mobs don't take damage unless they're in "combat" mode (I was prone and did not have aggro when I fired).
Understandable in a sense....but still if they are bunched up, you have no Idea what overhead spam is coming from which creature. At least from any kind of distance. At some point the overhead spam becomes blurred and bunched up. Then theres also the problem with the depth of the spam when your at range. if you have a mob of 5....1 creatures/npc's are standing right behind another and another slightly off to the side but still partly behind the other 2. You shoot, get overhead spam....how many overhead spams do you see in those couple of seconds? Which creature/npc did each spam come from? How many times did you shoot fanshot?
You see what I'm saying....you can't always tell exactly what or who you hit. just because you hit a group of 5 and you see 5 over heads spam that say head shot, does not mean you hit all 5. You can potentailly hit 1 creature/npc in the head twice. It's not like fanshot shoots a specific amount of shots and each one has to hit a different npc.
A Prime example is when I use 1 fanshot on a single creature/npc....sometimes you get multiple hits with one shot....it's rare and doesn't happen a lot but, you can potentailly hit one area twice thus meaning that one of the creatures/npc's in the mob did not take a hit....but again no way to prove this to be 100% true.
IMHO, fanshot is not bugged....it just pains me to see on every professions forum that as soon as someone notices something odd, something they never seen before or something they don't like....the scream...it's a bug, it's broken...fix it. Do some extensive test, gather some info from those test and these forums....throw that together with what we know about the devs intentions for any particular ascpect of this game and then draw your conclussion before you scream bug.
Just like when people screamed about armor peircing being bugged but later found out that the devs said it was working the way they intended to work.
anyway, sure there are bugs, but not everything is instantly a bug....again, this is something I will do some test on and see for myself....
Oh yeah one more thing, lag can play a part in it too. I just noticed yesterday when I was in the kunga cave the lag was so bad on the server that I would press F10 (my fanshot button) and it would shoot...but the mob did not immediatley arggo or take damage....then a couple of seconds later they would take damage and aggro. I know it was do to the server being at a high capacity as usually the second I shoot I get instant arggo and damage. But in this particular case, I could actually shoot the mob, /peace, turn and run about 25m before they would even move.....then once they started moving I could see in the overhead map that they were moving faster than usual.....I assume this was the server finally sending the info to my computer all at once and made everything speed up....in a sense the actions I performed on the server side had to catch up with the actions I performed on my side (the client side). At the time I had 105 ping and bandwith was like 3.1 or something, my computer was not lagging at all and there were no warping anywhere....this is how I know the packets from the server were taking a long time to reach my computer. You have to factor these things in as well...most of the time it's not noticeable...sometimes it's very apparent.
i just rember one time i got shot with a fan shot and my spam said:
time
xx:xx:01 you took 200 dmg
xx:xx:01 you took 200 dmg
xx:xx:01 you took 200 dmg
xx:xx:01 you took 200 dmg
xx:xx:01 you took 200 dmg
xx:xx:02 you shoot and miss, your dead lol
that last one was a joke but my point is the special says hit a targetmultiple times maybe it randomly switchs from cone to multiple hits on one target

use a different special first, or jus auto attack to get them all to agro, them hit fan shot
ping the lair first, 1 shot will aggro all of them on u. a couple more shots on the lair will send them all running in to it to heal. then tab to a mob and fan shot "like a giddie little school girl". fan shot will not damage the lair unless the lair is targeted.
or just send in your uber pet to the lair, and fan shot at your leisure.

Actually this is the description that is given in the game. "hits a target multiple times". Maybe hitting multiple enemies was the bug and people liked it so much the devs decided to not take it out.
