Another possibility...check your battle fatigue versus his. It makes a HUGE difference I found out. I had a 196 or so battle fatigue and was having issues killing blues in unarmed. I got it down to 0 and my attacks probably tripled in speed and I was chaining blues/whites.

Not knowing all, could the condition of a gun come into play (from the question can you tell I played DAoC?)

the attacks are executing as far as i know, the animation just doesnt show the laser. were you looking at your combat screen?

what you are describing happens to me often as well. its not all that dis-similar from when you one shot something while standing and you never see the laser animation.
