tlk,
it depends upon what your definition of 'functional' is.
do we shoot pistols? yes.
are we comparable to other pure combat professions? no.
can we do anything interesting with our weapons? no - just a bleed, a pistol whip, and broken random HAM attacks.
are we to be feared in combat? no.
are we useful in high level pve? no.
pvp? no way.
Gonna have to disagree on that last point...my Geo Pistol is something people fear, and I get the cert at.....Techniques 2!
Something from Pistoleer that people fear!
The other dayI faced 6 people by myself...I killed 5 of them, the 6th ran away...
(I was using a pistoleer special)
Just becauseyou aren't effective in PvP, doesn't mean this class isn't...
And the biggest noob response in the world...
I've got a 400 max damage geo pistol, and BH pistol 4 as well as master pistoleer.
As soon as ANYONE puts on stun layer armor (which on wanderhome is a large majority of people) you'll do about 100 damage at the most with your powerfullest attack.
Can we hit a pool for 300-500 a shot through armor of 80% resist and 40% stun resist like a rifleman? No.
Do we have any state effects like carbineer? No.
Pistoleer is a joke, by itself or with rogue or expert BH. If you want to win in PvP, get rifleman.
ah, the obligatory noob caller...
Its because of these kind of posts that nothing gets fixed. Devs read 42 complaints and 3 posts saying "My Pistol Pwns" and think everything is fine. Those 42 ppl must just be whiners. For the average casual player pistoleer sux. A powergamer will excel at any prof they have, well maybe not pikeman ![]()
The main problem is people are leaving this game left and right nowadays. Once we get our toon honed its gets boring after that. There is just so many times I can go and kill object A. Pub8 is junk. I think it was TH that said since Combat Balance was shelved pub8 was going to address "major combat issues". I'd like to know which issues they mean. I don't see anything in the notes.
I hate gettin' on a rant andwhinin' and moanin' about the game but I'm paying $30 a month for this. I expect more customer service than "your thread has been deleted". I submit a ticket and wait, and wait, and then get a CSR to tell me sorry that poofed there is nothing we can do. I want this game to be good but I'm not sure I can wait for Space much longer. Besides, if space is gonna have this many probs should I wait around? Maybe they need to pull some ppl off the expansion and get this game fixed before there is nobody left to play it.

A standard Sonic Blaster is around 100-300 dmg AP0, nothing a good stun layered armor and a synthsteak can't reduce to a mere sting.
If you're talking about a Krayt tissue enhanced version - almost all high-level pistols are somewhat useful when they're enhanced.
Just because you can afford a gun like that doesn't mean that the average Pistoleer can.
Do other combat professions have to rely on a rare dropped schematic weapon with an even rarer loot component? Definitively not.
PvP doesn't take place in a single-profession vacuum. In addition to your template, there is the other guy's template... and there is no golden template that is always better than everything else. I even know a few pike templates that are quite deadly...
Is Pistoleer not meeting its full potential as a profession? I'd say it's not.
Is it unplayable? No.
Is it gimped? Not really.
Is it equal to other combat professions, in itself? No. And this is where most peoples' problems begin.
The short version is that being successful as a pistol combatant depends very heavily on the rest of your template. This is somewhat true for every profession, but it's most true for the heavily diluted ones - Pistoleer and Carbineer.
