I ask this because awhile ago I made the decision to be a pistoleer when I saw that I could do mind damage(eyeshot), knockdown (lowblow), fire (torsoshot) and all sorts of different types (Acid, energy, stun, kinetic, heat)
This was though before I realised the nature of the speed cap. My jaw dropped when I read that a carbineer can fire a medium Ap 100-400 laser carbine at 1 speed with any special. I thought speed was a pistol thing. Silly me for thinking that stuff would be balanced.
I got Master pistoleer/Bh pistol/Smug anyway and while I like dodge, the defenses, the pistols I am pretty saddened that I only do three attacks out of the like basically Pistolwhip, fanshot, last ditch. I salivate in thinking that Carbineers get *working* specials and state effects but would I be happy? What are your thoughts? What made you guys stick with Pistoleer?

With BH Pistols, Dirty Fighting and Master Pistoleer you should be firing your specials at capped speed. I couldn't really tell you, I hate pistols, and probably would hate carbines too. If only the specials did something... Instead of only crappy damage.
I think... Well, stick to the pistols... I dunno if you'll be able to apply dizzy with the BH specials (I'm no BH), but I know that: Torso Shot gives fire status, Last ditch causes stun, Low Blow is a ranged KD, Panic is a delay shot like Warcry, Healthshot causes bleed, Eye shot causes blind. Since you have Novice Brawler (Smuggler req) you can also intimidate. So ummm, we're only missing Dizzy... That's not a bad trade-off considering you can hit mind.

well from a pure numbers standpoint, if that is all you care about try something else...rifles maybe. Or Swordsman...
But Ive never been a fotm kinda guy...My true opinion is play what you like and you will have more fun even if you cant take down a Krayt Dragon (which neither pistols nor carbines can really do very well
)

The defenses in carabineer are pap though. Oh sure, you'll be able to dish out damage, but KD dizzies, stuns, intimidates... In PvE with a tank, you'll probably to quite good (except for the HAM costs heh) but in a 1v1 PvP I'd say your rear end would be constantly wearing all manner of states, and the only thing between you and the ground is a good stack of thak.
But I've never tried carbines beyond master marksman (had a guildie who said he didn't have enough defenses to kill janta's, but I think he had the reamining skill points in master dancer or some such
) so maybe it's great if you figure out how to play it...

That is all fine and good Max, but the fact that Pistol gets the short end of the stick in EVERY aspect except for Dodge and good state defense. Pistol lacks in damage, ap, ranged and really even melee defense, speed and most of all accuracy. A master pistoleer without BH pistol will be hard pressed to hit any defense stacker...or any melee using CoB. In fact, a pistoleer/bh pistol is still sub par to a Master Rifleman and that is just wrong.

get on test center
build both characters in about five minutes with the froggie
try out both
you will be SHOCKED
i did the same thing. i was a carbineer for a while and when the froggie servers went up i JUMPED at the chance to see what it was going to be like as a master carbineer.
i took each template to Dathomire, Night Sister Hunting.
on each of the 8 occasions the master carbineer / bounty hunter carbines character took AGES and AGES to kill ANYTHING on Dath. the damage output was not nearly what i had hoped.
the pistol specialist on the other hand took less time to kill Night Sisters and was able to kill MORE per buff session than the carbineer.
perhaps it is just that 'i don't know how to play a carbineer' but i don't think that is it as i had BEEN playing carbineer on live and had only ever dabbled in pistol before.
it is up to you, but if you are looking for damage output...go Master Rifleman / TKM or Master Rifleman / Master Swordsman. as far as pure damage output DPS, nothing outdoes the hand-howitzers of rifleman

I absolutely agree...it is just plain wrong that other professions can shoot faster than us. That other ranged professions get better weapons for just about every situation. And that in order to make our profession work we have to rely on other professions is just plain wrong. Im making it my #1 priority to make sure that Pistoleers come out of this revamp having the tools they need to be a standalone strong profession.

Well, BH/Carbine has some nice state effects and a decent KD, medium AP weapons, but limited damage types and no attacks that specifically hit the mind pool.
BH/Pistoleer caps speed on every weapon, has a wide variety of damage types, eyeshot to target mind pool, but only light AP weapons.
All comes down to preference. Right now I am working on MBH to go with my master pistoleer. Going to try that out for a bit to see how it goes.

i took down a krayt using a scatter pistol, torso shot, and fake death.

I dueled a master carbineer / bh 0400 before with my master pistoleer / bh 0040 and it seemed to be a pretty decent match. I was taking more damage then usual cuz I had my grinding armor on but it was almost a match up. I think in the end, I would have prevailed because he hit less ofthen due to my pistol dodge.
Pistoleer takes a lot of lumps but its is a great profession WHEN COMBINED with another such as BH 0040 or smuggler 0040. I do see SOME benefit of carnineer 0020 which gives some defense vs. KD and intimidate. I cant see wasting the SP on that though...i would rather have medic 0020 or smuggler 0040 ( i have never used smuggler). . .

carbineers have attacks better than fanshot. fullautoarea does decent damage and applies stun, blind, and dizzy. (not usually all at once) chargeshot2 is an area KD. burst2 is a plain area attack but his a higher modifier than fanshot. (ontop of carbines naturally being higher damage than pistols.)
and if we're comparing... crippleshot has a higher damage modifier than either stoppingshot or last ditch.
the trade off, as others have mentioned, is in the defenses. dodge works better than counterattack, carbineers have rather poor defenses. (less melee defense than a master musician, lol)
