Thread: Rifleman can tank better than we can?

Ok, so yesterday apparently there was a bombshell dropped over in the Chef forums. Those wacky Chefs finally figured out how ranged and melee defense mods work, and the results are a bit disturbing.

They figured out that melee defense only works if you are unarmed, or holding a MELEE weapon. They vice versa is also true, meaning that ranged defense only works when you are holding a ranged weapon.

They tested even more, and they found out that melee defense is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS to ranged professions. Thats right, vegeparsine and melee def clothes dont do onw damn thing to help ranged professions. In fact, it turns out that ranged defense and melee defense have nothing to do with what type of weapon you are ATTACKED with, but rather what weapon you have EQUIPPED.

Sound like BS? Well it spread to the Jedi forums. And the BH forums. And in nearly every single case it was completely proved that this is how it is working. The only times it was disputed is when the tester forgot to unequip and reequip their weapon when using the ranged and melee defense foods and clothes.

The Chef correspondent forwarded all this information to the Devs and asked for clarification on whether this is working as intended or not.

Here is the kicker: If it IS working as intended, then we as pistoleers got the shaft...big time. Rifleman have +100 ranged defense at master. We only get +85. Carbineers get even more screwed over, as they only get +75 ranged defense. That means that Rifleman have HIGHER defenses that either Pistoleer or Carbineer.

This isnt cool. If the devs come back and say that this is working as intended, then we are going to need to see a serious boost to Pistoleer and Carbineer ranged defense mods, or an outright cut to the Rifleman ranged defense mod. I have nothing against Rifleman, but they should NOT be able to tank better than a pistoleer or a Carbineer.

I think nearly the entire SWG universe is waiting to see what the Devs say on this. LOL. I found out about it this morning, and have been a bit freaked. Im a Pistoleer/Carbineer, so this affects me on both sides.

Ackehece mentioned last night that he received a no-response from Dev's when asked which he said usually means working as intended, or they dont know what the hell he is talking about.

i read somewhere in the last day or twothat 'ranged defence' gives you the same amount of melee & ranged, and only works when holding a ranged weapon (ie the words 'ranged defence' appear to mean defence against both forms of attack when holding a ranged weapon), the same being true of 'melee defence', which also gives youequal amounts ofmelee and ranged defenceand only works when you are unarmed or carrying a melee weapon.

(may be wrong of course)

so you may still be better being a bounty hunter Tojo..

I think that is basically what the original poster is saying, although I think he forgot to factor in the named defense (pistol/carbs/rifle). When you do that, Pistols still have the best defenses, but only by 5. We get a total of +5 better defenses than Rifleman, and Carbineers have 15 LESS defenses than Rifleman. Just doesnt sound quite right, but hey...we are waiting for an answer.

I'm a bit confused about things. I don't see the findings as a bad thing. It seems like it would be easier to manage if the way it's working is the way it's supposed to be working. Is the problem just in that the defensive mods themselves are unfair given that melee defenses no longer play in while carrying a ranged weapon?

Right. If this is how it should work, why are we given melee defense at all? You could say that its for running unarmed for speed, or for people with a ranged and melee template (pistol/fencer, etc) but that seems pretty flimsy.

If this is the case, hopefully some dev right now is going 'oops' and changing the defense formula from defender.weapon.melee_or_ranged to attacker.weapon.melee_or_ranged.

Is this a recent change?

if so, then there are definate issues.

If not, then remember that just because we know about it doesn't unbalance everything.

I've done both sides of the Pistol/rifleman fence post cu... and to me they are balanced, as long as you balance them out in perspective. Pistols have great streanghs, intimidate and root being the best, along with really low sac. rifleman have there streanghs to, mostly being range. (MBH and MCarb's specials outdamage Rifleman)

Just keep that in mind people, that if it was pretty balanced before the relevation, then simply knowlege of how it really works does not unbalance it.

What bothers me most is the (as usual) "slilence of the Devs".....The least they could say is we're checking on it....I'ts not like it's an isolatd problem as it effects ALL combat profs. But instead there's just dead air coming from that side....At least someone from development could tell any of the corespondents " we hear you we're checking it out"
