Thread: Moan Moan Moan
Firstly the Ranger can track things BUT can only track things within 500m, presuming there are no hills rocks or houses in the way and then it doesn't work so well. Also since things don't spawn until your about 100m away this 500 meters is some what reduced. This makes a whole line of skill boxes semi-useless (and now potentialy completly useless - more later)
Seconday, the Ranger can make some nice camps, which although look pretty and can heal damage pretty well if you sit in them for long enough really don't compare to a doc with medic droid. Now you don't even need to have camps to call pets and mounts. Again making a whole four boxes (for which you get 2 new camps total) pretty pointless.
Next up is the added terrain negotiation skill box which enables the Ranger to move faster while in the prone position and to make camo kits which actually don't even work as well as mask scent and take up more resource than they are worth. So far 3 practially useless skill trees.
Nearly there but we can't forget about Traps now can we. As a Ranger you get three or four more traps over what a master scout gets. They have area affects which not only last around 10 seconds but actually agro all the mobs onto you so you might as well not use them. Waste of four skill boxes.
Now to top all that off (and coming back to the skill line with area track in it), Rangers did have a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel they could harvest around 25% more resources than your basic scout type. BUT seems like every man and his dog with a droid and a few Harvesting modules fitted will soon be able to get their own hides, bones and meat.
Now having been a Master Ranger and finally giving up in frustration and still being a Master Pistoleer I compare the two. After doing so I sit down and think to myself how much more useful pistoleer is compared to Ranger, I notice all my defence mods, and specials of which some are broken and don't quite work as it says on the tin BUT still have some kind of use.
I think all this and I know things need to be fixed and balanced and the bugs Ironed out - and I see these things are slowly happening - and I finally think to myself "Really do we need to moan so much" You are right we need to fire faster, we need more targeted HAM specials and the special we have could do with a bit of a fix up but it does't make pistoleer useless.
Come on guys and girls be a bit more positive - you after all did choose to be a pistoleer. If you really wanted you could have been a Rifleman.

Looks at thread author's register date, realizes its another n00b who hasnt had to deal with this since release and therefore isnt feeling the hurt anywhere near as badly as those of us who've been here since release. Go away troll.
Nice - very constructive reply.
Troll? No. I'm just sick of having to sift through the posts telling me that pistoleer is crap. I just wish people who think it's crap just go and be something else - is that not the whole point of being able to drop skills and gain new ones. I look at the pistoleer forum to see if things are changed, fixed, etc but now I have to sift through pages of "Pistoleers are Crap" posts in order to see what is actually going on with the profession. No wounder our correspondant has to sticky so many posts otherwise they'd be three pages down before anyone got to read them.
And perhaps given the fact that I have only been playing since the European Release of the game I am able to cast a new opinion on the subject as my eyes are not fogged by "feeling the hurt"
Pistoleer = Apple
Ranger = Orange
You can't compare ranger and pistoleer. They are two totally different types of professions. You can compare pistoleer vs carbineer orpistoleer vs rifleman, even pistoleer vs melee professions or pistoleer vs BH. Ranger is not a combat profession.
Well, there is one way you can compare them: however good ranger is or isn't, rangers had a complete revamp to their profession. Pistoleers have been largely ignored, except for nerfs and a minor tweak here and there.Being ignored is frustrating.Frustration leads to people being ticked off, especially if they really want to likethe profession. Frustration leads to either people complaining loudly because they want to like the profession, changing professions, or leaving the game.
I've been a pistoleer since release and picked up smuggler a couple months ago. Pistoleer and carbineer aren't completely useless, but if you put one of them up against a rifleman head to head, all other things being equal (top of the line non-enhanced weapons), the rifleman will win the vast majority of the time.
Then put a rifleman and a pistoleer together and see who can do the most damage against a krayt dragon with their heavy armor. Its a freaking joke. I mean, its not even close. Even with an AR1 pistol, the damage of the pistolgets cut to 25% due to armor before the resists are even counted. Not that pistols should be able to dominate in every situation, but notice how many many of the high end opponentsseem to have heavy armor. A pistoleerhas no hope of keeping up with a rifleman.
Great post, (I mastered both Ranger and Pistoleer, in July/August '03)
A bit of more info/clarification. Rangers get 2 new traps over scout trapping 4 (no traps in Master Scout).
Pistoleer is a perfectly functional profession, the descriptions of many of our specials are wrong (but they all work).
Many recent complaints about pistoleer is that they can not go toe to toe with a master rifleman (who can?).
What many people forget is that there are NO master combantats out there without support from other professions (250 skill points).
Yes, pistoleers have problems that shouldbe addressed, but none of them are game stoppers or ruin the profession, they simply prevent the profession from being on par with Rifleman, Fencer, or TKM (some of the best functioning professions).
Ranger was lots of fun, and many forget that the purpose of the camo kit isn't for the ranger, but for the group (those without mask scent). But tracking/trapping/survival trees are seriously lacking in abilities to justify them (tracking does have a very nice creature knowledge and harvesting bonuses).
Less complaining and more constructive feedback on our profession will be more successful in getting what we all want. (although this forum really is not the whiny forum that the original poster may have implied, read jedi, lol now there is a nice forum).
"Is it just me but everytime I read this forum and I see posts like... "Pistoleers, Cancel your account" and "Pistoleer is a joke and so are you if you like it." type posts it just makes me laugh to think how pistoleers (myself included) have got it good compared to other professions. Lets take for example Ranger (and take a look at their forum if you don't believe me - they really do have stuff to moan about).
Firstly the Ranger can track things BUT can only track things within 500m, presuming there are no hills rocks or houses in the way and then it doesn't work so well. And you accuse US of moaning? Look it like this....even the BEST proffesion can moan about SOMETHING pretty much anybody can....now as I see it Pistoleer isnt gimped the worst...and other then that we havent even SAID "Oh we're the worst most gimped profession there ever was..." we said "Our specials dont work...plz fix them" thats mostly what you see...as for the Pistoleer is a Joke thing that wasnt even a Pistoleer that posted...he was before but he was just posting to be an ass methinks. If you think Ranger is the most gimped prof I guess we're all entitled to our opinions, but I dont feel like hearing yours on our boards...so my advice to you is simple. Shut up.
I'm not a Ranger (although I used to be a Master Ranger) but I am a Master Gunfighter so I think I am entitled to post my opinion on *your* boards.
My intention for my post was to point out as some have correctly said in replies, that Pistoleer is far from a broken profession as some of the posts on this board have been indicating. I used the Ranger profession of something which is far worse of then the pistoleer profession as I have been a Ranger myself and know what it is like to really be useless. As far as pistoleer goes I agree it's not so hot in PvP verses a Master Rifleman but again it gets me by when out hunting, PvE.
I think the correct way to describe it to quote a reply "Is pistoleer is unbalanced" and I would whole heartedly agree with that statement and that something needs to be done about it. But I have noticed more and more negative posts along the lines of "we are crap" posts which really don't make for good reading (and I am sure that my post is probably one of those as well but in my opinion it had to be said before this board looks like the Jedi board)
But you are also correct moaning sometimes does mean people get their way quicker but do we really need to stoop down to that level?
Maybe our issues will get fixed in the combat balance. Who knows but like I said before if it's got to a point where you are so hacked off with being a pistoleer and you have stopped enjoying it then go and do something else as you have that option, you can always come back, if and when pistoleer is more balanced.
Appologies for posting a thread which has turned into the type of thread which I was originaly complaining about.
um.....*looks at own sig*
Am I supposed to be all mad at everyone now because my professions don't work right?
Would I like to see my 2 professions that I've been since Shadowfire began work properly? sure
Have either of my professions had any real development time alotted to them in the past several months? no
Will I live? yes
All the professions are going to be bolstered in due time, my time just hasn't come yet. There are professions that are much worse off than me right now (i.e. Squad Leaders). The Ranger community is one of the most matureprofessions that I can think of. Have they gotten their dev time? not really. But have they lost their dignity and succumbed to the urge to constantly complain? Hell no. We rangers/pistoleers shouldn't degenerate into a bunch of whiners just because a few other professions did. Have some respect for yourselves, guys.

PS apparently I still suck.
so damn true
