What movie, tv or fictional character do you think defines the pistoleer profession?

For me it has to be Bruce Willis's character from "Last Man Standing". Tough as nails, fast and ruler of close range combat. He weilded two Colt 45s and relied on offense to deal with his enemies. The best defense is a strong offense. If you haven't seen it, you should as I think it defines our profession.

I dont know if it defines the Pistoleer... but i have something that deffinitly defines my character.

Its cleche but alot of fun. I created an Indian Gunslinger for a table top game called RIFTS. I carried over this character and he is the sole reason I am a pistoleer. Generally he uses two guns but i can cope heh. he was also into hand to hand martial arts in the table top game so i did work on unarmed combat, along with the special skills from Smuggler (since i had Unarmed and Pistol already it was just natural for me to go for those specials from Dirty Fighting).

He is a strange fellow and I do indeed roleplay him in public (not private friend groups). I have played the character in the table top for about 2 years now but this is my only game version of him.

Anyway... wanna bet how many will come up with "Grammaton Cleric" as their insperation? heh

Watch any western.

I disagree with the "best defense is good offense" as describing Pistoleers. That'sbetter describing aCarbineer.

My thoughts:

  • Pistoleer: Fast and mobile. Good defense makes them harder to hit. Opportunistic combatants.

  • Carbineer: Fast and immobile. Poor defense because of bulky weapons. Slugging combatants.

  • Rifleman: Slow and immobile. Poor defense because they are shooting you from far away. Sniping combatants.

Hmmm. I like the Last Man standing idea.

Really a pistoleer or a gunfighter should be the most "maverick" of the ranged classes. Two pistols should be available as well as a holster. Pistoleer's should also be able to shoot the gun out of their opponents hand (well we have disarming shot, but it doesn't REALLY disarm the opponent.)

What would be really cool would be if Pistoleer's were more like the "Clerics" from Equilibrium. With the gun-kata and all that jazz. (Actually wouldn't that be a neato idea for a super elite profession? You would have to master both pistoleer and TKM to get it. Ah I'm off in a tangent. And still writing in parenthesis.)

Anyway

The Rifts Gunslinger is awesome. If I remember correctly they get like +20 to initiative. They are/were basically I go first and you all die. I think they also had the ability to split fire with two pistols???

Anyway, why is Jango Fett, a bounty hunter, allowed to use 2 pistols when we can't? A master bounty hunter dabbling in pistol could never dual weild in the current system (due to it not being in the game). Therefore duel weild should be a 4th level box skill.

Jango Fett is another one to add to the list. He also demonstrates how stopping shot should work (killed the bull thing in one shot in the arena).

Hey how about Vash the Stampede from Trigun.

Or, Spike Speigel from Cowboy Bebop.

And another Bruce Willis character, John McClane, who was always pretty handy with a pistol, and was good at trickery (another attribute that a pistoleer should be good at.) You know like being able to tape a gun to your back and...

ah, hehe. Nevermind.

Vash almost never fires his gun. Billy the kid was the prince of pistoleers in books and in mediocre films, i.e. Young Guns.
