Thread: Weapon change delay?

I'm against the weapon delay timer as it currently stands. Looks like a good idea implemented in true SOE style. i.e. poorly thought out.

If you want to make it work here are the changes.

  • Add in animations for the switching of weapons - preferably with holsters and shoulder slung carbines and rifles.

  • Seperate the delays for each weapon type.1 second delay when the switch is between two different pistols. 2 second delay if the switch involves a carbine weapon. 3 second delay if the switch involves a rifle or heavy weapon.

  • Add a special to the quickdraw line of pistol which makes the next switch have no delay.

The fourth change I've long been in favour of is putting the delay before combat begins reflecting the ease of use of the pistol.

e.g. A commando and a pistoleer of opposing factions crash into each other as they turn a corner in Coronet. Both begins to fumble for their weapon. As it currently stands the commando has the advantage as the weapons draw immediately, and he has the most damaging weapon.

With this change the pistoleer suddenly has a change bringing his pistol to bear a full2 seconds before the commando.

This is what pistols were designed for.

Does ANYONE like this 3-4 second delay on changing weapons? I know I don't and I know the BH community doesn't either. Seems us pistoleers with our variety of damage types get screwed by this as well

I'm at work but havent got to experience that delay which sounds like a pain to me. . .we pistoleers are already need to adapt to our limitations. This is just another impedance. . .

I'm ok with SOME delay, but if it's the same regardless of weapon, that sucks.

Which should take longer? Switching from a scout blaster to a DL44, or switching from a flamethrower to an LLC?

I think a good way to do it would be to have the delay be the sum or perhaps average of the currently equipped weapon and the weapon being switched to.

blame people abusing the system for this one. the timer was not directed at any one profession, just a general fix to a fairly big problem, as well as what would have been a fairly big problem in the future.

This is a part of the combat balance. We will have to learn to live with it. You can be sure that there will be many more changes to come.

I do have faith that since pistoleer has been "broken" compared to other profs that the combat revamp will be a net gain for us.

Yet another sign of the complete disconnect between the people playing the game and the people flinging code changes at the game.

The weapon change delay doesn't make that much of a difference in combat. In pvp, you'll never need to make more than one weapon change for pistols; either you use stun or you don't. In pve, you should have checked the mobs resists before going into combat in the first place. Unless you're using a dozen different weapons to stack dots, and that's why you're getting nerfed.

It'd be nice if these didn't apply outside of combat, though. Having to stop for the better part of a minute to put armour on before starting a mission gets tedious. Seems like the devs are trying to force everyone to walk around in full composite armour with a giant rifle in hand 24/7 on the off chance something attacks them, rather than letting us wear clothing and put the guns away while we're in town or travelling.

No.... actually it shows that they're paying more attention than people realize, and that most players scream at them when they don't understand a change. If there was a "complete disconnect" between the Devs and the players, then the Devs wouldn't have known about the ways to rapidly switch weapons and armor in ways that can lead to exploits. But, of course, when they take measures to prevent those exploits, nobody bothers to understand why and just cries "nerf."

I'm not saying I like the change, in fact I'm indifferent, but understanding a change and liking a change seem to be two things people have trouble separating around these forums.

this delay is neccessary to prevent exploits

the devs won't tell us what exploits they are preventing because the devs will never tell us ways to exploit in this game

i don't like it, but it affects everyone, and the devs know that many professions don't like it, so maybe there will be a happy medium sometime soon

So I take it you have never been fighting some mob in PvE and have another different mob spawn on you? Happens to me on Dathomir all the time. I will be fighting rancors and have nightsisters spawn and have to switch back and forth.

(sorry for the blank post above - lost my text on a preview)

I may be in the minority on this, but I 100% support the delay for switching of weapons/armor during combat. The ability to instantaniously swap between any number of items held in your total character inventory during the heat of combat really breaks the illusion of a quasi-realistic world. The lack of delay is fine in the run-'n-gun world of a FPS, where I make no pretense that the game is anything other than a thrill-ride, but in an RPG context, it just doesn't make sense that a new suit of armor or a heavy weapon could be equipped at the drop of a hat.

If the devs had an infinite budget to come up with a different solution, yeah, I think they probably could have done better (for example, an 'inventory' toolbar with a limited number of spots, where only these items could be equipped/uniquipped during the heat of combat), but they don't. Since I'm not willing to pay more per month for this game, and they have such a diverse range of issues/enhancements to work on, I'll take this delay as an acceptable (although not ideal) resolution.
