I should add, however, that you need to play with your loadout yourself--don't take my word for it, see how well you like it.Advice is all well and good, but each pilot has his or her own flying style.
I know
Was looking for specific experiences with L6 weapons.
The one I just put together does 1564 average damage per shot (calculating thatincluding effectiveness) and just over 4000 DPS. My L7s are around the same damage per shot and just over 5000 DPS, for 3-4k more mass.

So yes, I think a level 6 is viable in PvP. On a single-gun ship, it's iffy as far as I'm concerned...but then again, you wait long enough, someone will probably catch me in an A-wing with a level 6 or something.
Post stats now, so I can compare
I'd drag out mine, but the server's down...
So why iffy for PVP? If you're doing the same damage per shot as an L7, what's holding it back?

You'll love the TIE Interceptor. This is the best ship (in my opinion) in the Imperial Fleet.
So far it's been a fun ship to play with and I regularly go to Deep Space overt. Haven't had a chance to be shot at in PVP.
RE L6 Engine
9.7K Mass
69/68/68 Y/P/R, 71.4 Speed
Best looking ship, at least ![]()
Interesting that you chose an L6 engine. I would have thought that would be suicide in PVP. I have the parts to put together a 71-72 YPR L6, and that would definitely cut down on the mass, leaving enough for an L8 weapon.
I would go grab the stats from mine, but I'm too lazy at the moment, and I should be in bed. ![]()
Generally, a rule of thumb for PvP goes something like this:
level 7 blaster--takes multiple hits, but refires fast--better chance of hitting with the "spray and pray" approach.
level 8 blaster--takes one or two hits, but slower refire--more precision required.
A level 6 is going to take the disadvantages of both guns. On a multi-gun ship, that's easier to overcome--but on a single-gun ship, it means you have to be very precise with your shots, especially against higher-speed, low-profileships like the Actis and Belbullab. That doesn't mean it's not still useable, but it'll be more difficult to kill small targets in PvP.
Just dug out my stash of L6 engines. Pre- and Post-RE stats:
79 Speed - 82.2
68.8 Pitch - 71.6
68.8 Yaw - 71.6
69.2 Roll - 72.0
8772 Mass - 8421
1452 Drain - 1394
Thoughts?
Regarding the L6 weapon... you're right about the trade-offs. I'd love to have 15k more mass and an extra gun slot in the Interceptor, but I just can't bring myself to fly an Advanced. I like my Interceptor ![]()
I think it could work if you paired it with a missile launcher and made sure to launch one as soon as you landed a blaster hit, but otherwise, I'm not sure the damage per hit ratio would be good enough to win frequently against other interceptors.
Also, while many players have moved up to level 8 or even level 10 engines, a level 6 engine is enough to keep you competitive if you have the ability to do a lot of damage in a short amount of time, and thus make the most of your rare hits. Whether that comes from a big gun, or a medium gun plus a missile launcher, that's up to you.. but for 1v1 fighting, I do think the ability to dish a lot of damage can be underrated.
