Thread: Best Solo (non-crewed) Freelance Ace ship
I point you to this guide my guildie wrote on the M22 Krayt. It's the definitive guide on the Krayt and should be stickied.

If you're like me, a true heavy fighter pilot then get the Krayte and only put the 3 forward guns on it. With out a turret there is a lot of room for the heavy equipment and it allows you to have some real firepower. Learn to fly it and you can keep up with A wings. There are some light fighter pilots that you won't be able to but there aren't many if you can control you're throttle right.
Still looking for my first encounter with a hostile JSF or Grievous.... Gotten plenty of A wing kills and a few heavy X wings.
For those that say the Heavy X wing is the best for PvE. You haven't flown a real heavy fighter.

Heavy X and krayt are medium fighters in terms of performance, heavy in terms of firepower. TIE Bomber, Y-Wing and B-Wing are the only true heavies in the game.
In answer to the original question, I prefer the heavy X and rikhxyrk over the Krayt. It's only 30k and 20k lower mass with a much better weapon spread.

The B wing is the only ship heavier then the Krayte with more pilot controlled firepower. Since the Krayte isn't part of the movies or normal cannon I don't think that you can say it is a medium fighter. True it performs more like a medium fighter untill you get to mass and firepower... but medium fighters don't have turrets. In truth the Krayte performs to well for it's mass. Doesn't need a nerf since it is such a huge target to hit though. The standard X wing is a medium fighter. The heavy X wing is more fo a heavy fighter and like all teh RotW ships needs some adjustment on how well it handles.
Any way the Krayte has a better gun pattern then the X wing but worse then the Rhy. The X wing has 2 guns ont eh outer wings and the Krayte has 1. The Rhy is the only heavy fighter I have flown with a good concentrated gun pattern and mroe then one gun. The B wing and the KSE I know have a worse pattern. Don't know about the Y wing but I bet it has a good pattern also.
What you need to know about the Krayt is this: It's a gunship. It's not a fighter, it's a gunship. So anything you want to talk about in performance is relative. I don't know the Imperial ships as well but the ships you're comparing the Krayt to are the Firespray (remember, this used to be the Privateer master, single player ship right up until just before relase) and the B-Wing. The B-Wing (the B stands for Bus) in Star Wars lore was designed as a Star Destroyer ... err ... destroyer. So it's not meant to be really maneuverable. But what it has is some serious mass and some serious firepower. The KSE Firespray is much more maneuverable than the B-Wing but it has two guns instead of four. The Firespray also has two launchers for some real damage dealing. The Krayt sits in between the two. It's the compromise between the two designs. It has three pilot guns (plus one turret gun for a second player), it has a single launcher. It's not as handy as the Firespray but it tends more towards the Firespray then Da'Bus.
This ship is not in the same class as an Xwing or a Dunelizard so it's really silly for the above referred critiquer to compare it as such. None of the big ships are good for PvP, comparing them is a bit like saying the Hummer is a crappy car in comparison to a Ferrari because it doesn't go 0-60 in a nanosecond.
Bottomline is you want different ships for different things. As a Master Pilot you want your YT-1300 for multiplayer fun and during Corvette missions or such it can be a great way of getting newer pilots XP while giving a pilot a couple of space bombs to take out important turrets. You want your Dunelizard for zipping around and as a poor man's PvP ship. You want your Krayt as a heavy damage dealer. The Grevious and JSF are probably the best dogfighters in the game right now because they have some decent mass, fantastic performance numbers, and two guns.
The Vaksai fighter is also pretty good giving you something like 150k in mass but only one gun. You can, however, easily put on great shields and an L4 proton launcher.
So in the end, I think there isn't an answer to your question because it comes down to personal preference and what you want to do with it. If you want speed and maneuverability and are willing to sacrifice mass, the JSF and Grevious ships are probably the best ships out there. The Krayt is the best and, imo, definitive Heavy fighter. The Vaksai and Dunelizard, I think, get honourable mention.
The Krayt has quite a big gap between the center guns and the wingmounts. The X-wing has 3 guns tight on the left and on the right, making it easier to do full damage. The X-wing also has a smaller wingspan compared to the Krayt, reducing the gap. The Y-wing has 2 centerline mounts close together and enough mass to equip RE'd L10's.
