A lot of it depends on your style too. Each ship is flown a diffrent way, you can't expect a gunship to perform like a dogfighter...
I've used my Dunelizard through the whole pilot tree, and can kill anything but the big gunboats or captitol ships with it. The Krayt has a lot of firepower, and decent manuverability, so it works well for all sorts of diffrent tasks, but there are better ships for diffrent jobs. Well, this applies to PvE anyway, as I haven't done any PvP....
I'd say to try it, play with it for a while and see if you like it. I've seen some pilots that get killed in the smaller fighters excel in something like the Krayt, and others that can kill anything in a small fighter not be able to kill anything in the larger ships.
