Thread: Y-8 Mining Vessel The mining vessel that can't mine
The Y-8 comes equiped with 2 turrets. The top turret has 360 degree view but can't aim below the bridge (and therefore cannot hit anything on an equal or lower plane to the ship). The rear turret can only fire on a 180 degree rear-axis and can only fire down. Due to the position of the lower turret, this means it can not hit anything infront or above the ship.
- Top turret's axis needs to be improved. It needs to be able to angle down, even if just by 30 degrees
- Swap one of the op's seats with the pilot's chair. This way, 1 pilot and 1 copilot work from the front of the bridge while a "captain" can sit in the captain's chair and still have a function.
- Add an extra turret below the bridge. This turret would fire down like the rear but have a forward-firing axis. This, combined with the top turret being able to fire down slightly should mean the Y-8 has every angle covered.
You left out the part about having the pilot's weapon actuallydoing damage more than 5% of the fewtimes that it actuallyhits a target.

- Turrets (when loaded with a mining laser or blaser) only fire once. you have to continuously spam the mouse button to get a constant stream of shots
- Items cannot be placed because the vessel item limit appears to be 0. On the rare occasion that you actually successfuly drop an item (i've managed it once) you can't move it up
- When moving (in cockpit mode as pilot) the star streaks fly through the bridge
- The lower section of the ship (below the "box" ) has no collision detection. You can fly a good bulk of your ship through objects
- Tractor beams loaded into the top turret don't switch off for other players aboard the ship once its fired until they access the turret themselves
- There is no loot box aboard the Y-8
- The Y-8 can not be re-deeded
Those are just bugs I've managed to find. I have no doubt there are more

I can't get my mining guns to work in any hard point. they fire at the asteroids or chunks but don't do anything.
also shouldn't the tractor beam put stuff directly into the hold. Has anyone been able to do this?
The tractor beam "drags" a small chunk into your hold ... on a fighter you just aim, hold down the trigger an watch as your ship sucks it up .. on the Y-8 you have play a game of cat and mouse with the chunk, trying to aim it toward you so that it doesnt move out of the firing arc of your turret and ultimately will end in you NOT storing the chunk and just getting frustrated.
The Y-8 is the biggest joke there is right now and since the turret archs are not "bugs" but "as design" it will NEVER get fixed. Meaning if you want to mine, you have to use a frickin fighter. What kind of space mining game is THAT?
The Y-8 Mining Vessel - Now aptly named the Y-8 Ugly Yacht
This image shows the firing arc of all 3 of the Y-8's weeapon slots. It shows quite clearly where the problem is (explained below):

As you can see from this image, none of the 3 weapons overlap the firing arc of the other two. This means in order to blast a rock, seperate it into smaller shards and tractor the chunks the pilot has to physicaly rotate the ship to allow one of the three weapons to be in range.
However, considerng the chunks move speradicly in different directions at speeds greater than 400 (they can outrun a nooby ship) the pilot would have to continuously rotate the ship on its axis to keep one of its 3 weapons in firing position ... and that clearly makes it impossible for a turret gunner to target and fire, especialy if trying to use a tractor beam.
Also, any tractored shard will tend toaim for the center of the ship when being tractored because of the positions of the turrets tractering them (they are both toward the center axis of the vessel). This means that when the shards reach a certain distance from the ship they will shift into the blind spot of the vessel .. meaning the pilot, once again, has to rotate the ship to allow a turret to re-capture it.
Ultimately this means the Y-8 has to go through an entire rythmic dance to even collect 1 asteroid chunk ... not because of the vessel itself but because of the position of the two turrets.
Here is a look at different positions on the ship that would produce different firing arcs:

In my opinion, the Y-8 should have ATLEAST 4 turrets and a 5 pilot-controled weapon. With 4 turrets placed in the locations shown by the white firing arcs plus atleast one of the current turrets you get almost total coverage allowing the vessel to do what its supposed to do without having to mess about spinning
The emphasis should still be on the Y-8 though. It needs to have something about it that says "yeah I'm an ass-kickery mining vessel. Sure you can use fighters with a cargohold or transport vessels with a converted tractor beam but they dont mine half as well as I do" I think that comes in how easy it would be to mine with it.
To mine in a fighter or multiplayer craft you have to "track" the chunks, blast them and then collect them ... the Y-8 should allow you to park up by the asteroid, blast at it and collect the resources without having to move. Can you really see a big lumbering mining vessel chasing asteroid chunks through an asteroid field with one top-mounted tractor beam and one rear-mounted tractor beam? Seem's incredibly stupid to me. These things are big and slow.. they are designed to sit there and eat up rocks.
