Another problems with the Y8...when you sit in either of the operations chairs your head sticks out into space!
Take a look at how high up above the seat you are!
Who beta tested this ship? They should be tickles mercilessly!
Dude....you and everyone who paid for ROTW is BETA testing it and it's not funny!!!!

This image shows the firing arc of all 3 of the Y-8's weeapon slots. It shows quite clearly where the problem is (explained below):

As you can see from this image, none of the 3 weapons overlap the firing arc of the other two. This means in order to blast a rock, seperate it into smaller shards and tractor the chunks the pilot has to physicaly rotate the ship to allow one of the three weapons to be in range.
However, considerng the chunks move speradicly in different directions at speeds greater than 400 (they can outrun a nooby ship) the pilot would have to continuously rotate the ship on its axis to keep one of its 3 weapons in firing position ... and that clearly makes it impossible for a turret gunner to target and fire, especialy if trying to use a tractor beam.
Also, any tractored shard will tend toaim for the center of the ship when being tractored because of the positions of the turrets tractering them (they are both toward the center axis of the vessel). This means that when the shards reach a certain distance from the ship they will shift into the blind spot of the vessel .. meaning the pilot, once again, has to rotate the ship to allow a turret to re-capture it.
Ultimately this means the Y-8 has to go through an entire rythmic dance to even collect 1 asteroid chunk ... not because of the vessel itself but because of the position of the two turrets.
Here is a look at different positions on the ship that would produce different firing arcs:

In my opinion, the Y-8 should have ATLEAST 4 turrets and a 5 pilot-controled weapon. With 4 turrets placed in the locations shown by the white firing arcs plus atleast one of the current turrets you get almost total coverage allowing the vessel to do what its supposed to do without having to mess about spinning
I think maybe some side-mounted turrets would work fine. And the front gun should not be fixed, but able to move a little. Controlled by 1 of the operators. The lower turret is a joke!
I liked the idea of a processor unit that have to be operated.
Btw, I was only able to get chunks loos whit the front gun. The roof gun never got any thing loos.

its not the size of a cargo hold that is an issue.. its the fact that many of us dont WANT to be mining in a damn fighter.
Getting the Y-8 up to speed as a proper mining vessel's going to be a high priority for us, so any suggestions you guys can come up with would really help, I'd bet. Nice discussion so far.

well thats a bug. I was ignoring bugs.. since there are PLENTY of them such as:
- Turrets (when loaded with a mining laser or blaser) only fire once. you have to continuously spam the mouse button to get a constant stream of shots
- Items cannot be placed because the vessel item limit appears to be 0. On the rare occasion that you actually successfuly drop an item (i've managed it once) you can't move it up
- When moving (in cockpit mode as pilot) the star streaks fly through the bridge
- The lower section of the ship (below the "box" ) has no collision detection. You can fly a good bulk of your ship through objects
- Tractor beams loaded into the top turret don't switch off for other players aboard the ship once its fired until they access the turret themselves
- There is no loot box aboard the Y-8
- The Y-8 can not be re-deeded
Those are just bugs I've managed to find. I have no doubt there are more

- Can't launch the Y-8 if you have both a yatch and a regular POB ships due to "You can't launch another ship with an interior, you have to clean out one ship first".

As for the Y-8 being a capable mining vessel... Well, only way that seems possible would be if it could mine while completely imobile. Either by keeping the bigger chunks of asteroid from moving away, or an ability to tractor them into their cargo hold.
