I did a very quick Ctrl-F in the Pilot FAQ, but didn't find the answer to this. My questions are:
Is the decay of the chassis on your ship a bad thing? If so, how do lower chassis hitpoints affect your ship?
I ask this because my JSF is at 195/195, and I asked someone today who told me that chassis decay is indeed a bad thing, but he logged off before I could ask why. Any response is appreciated.

bad cuz once it goes to 0 you will no longer be able to use the ship...

I was told it would never go to 0, unless I interpreted wrong.

Think of your chassis like a zero mass sheet of armor. It's your last line of defense. When you lose shields and armor in a quadrant, the "gsssh" sound you hear is the laser fire hitting your chassis.
There are "hot spots" around your hull that can damage specific components, but mostly you'll be taking it in the chassis.
The perils of flying a ship with about 500 points or lower of chassis hp is that as soon as your protective shielding is gone, deflector AND armor, you're dead - do not pass Go, do not collect $200. Your ship will still work at 10/10 chassis hp, but you should stick to loot gathering with it against stuff that won't kill you.
Use a more expendable and beefier ship to help people/take on larger and more dangerous targets.

That explains so much why my components go "poof" after my shields die. But it will never reach 0, right?

The chassis will stay at 10/10. Components CAN go under 10/10, I've seen them - but the decay gets so incredibly gradual after it hits 10/10 that you could get a lot more life out of them if you're careful.
The same principle goes for components - they each have their own Armor and HP. Once the armor on the component is gone (kind of a moot point since only the highest level components have enough armor to protect them from substantial T4/5 and PvP fire), the damage commutes into the hp, which degrades the performance of the component. If you have an engine with 600 points of armor/hp, and the armor is stripped, the engine will still work at 100% until it takes further damage.
You could have 1500hp on a component and still die immediately if you get hit past shielding and armor on a 10/10 chassis ship, though. At your score of 195/195, expect to maybe get ONE hit's worth of protection from a turret, after that, you're a goner.

Noticed thison my Nova, itdecays about 200 points of hull condition every time its destroyed or seriously damaged. That's a little friggin' abusive, isn't it? I'm only supposed to get 15 chances to repair my ship before its totally buggered?
Yeesh.

chassis decay should be removed from the game or at least severly reduced. having high level chassisn like the PoB ships decay is one thing, but with all the new RoTW reward ships, many of these could end up disapearing from sooner or later

I stand corrected, wait a month or two before changing this.

1. Chassis decay can be totally avoided. Jump to Deep Space after your ship is destroyed and there is no decay. (vrepair of vrepairother from a rebel pilot helps most of the time.)
2. Chassis decay (at least the absolute amount) is diminishing over time as the decay is 10%.
3. You do not loose the chassis, it is never entirelly destroyed and condition won't drop below 10. This is not that exciting considering you want shields and armor to protect your ship, not chassis hitpoints.

Well, I treat chassis like another sheet of zero-mass armor.
Not caring about it is the surest way to get your ass shot out from under you. Components or no, zero chassis = death.
10/10s are good for PvP, where it's pretty much one-shot anyway, but for PvE - NEVER use a 10/10 or similarly low-condition chassis unless you HAVE to.
