Thread: Mining Etiquette?

I have just started space mining seriously in the last month, since I unlocked my alt, and I plan to take her to master shipwright. I have been stockpiling a few thousand of each space resource for when I get there ,(I know it's not much, but it's a start,) and I have a question about the space mining process.

There have been a few times where I was not the only one mining a particular asteroid. It never bothers me if someone else is there mining the asteroid. We just take turns. We don't even talk about it. One of us shoots off an asteroid chunk while the other waits. While the first person chases that big chunk and the resulting small chunks down, the next person takes their turn from the main rock, and so on and so forth until our respective cargo holds are full. It doesn't really make mining any longer, and both of us go away happy.

Then there was today.

There aren't many people on Sunrunner that pilot much, I think. I seldom see many people out there, at least. So having three people at one asteroid mining it at once is pretty rare. There was a Krayt, a Y-8 and me in my POS JSF (I know, not a mining ship, I have not the money or the resources to get/make anything better, but that's not what I'm here to write about.) Anyway, the Krayt proceeds to chase down every asteroid and asteroid chunk that either I or the Y-8 mining vessel shoot off. He would just shoot whatever he wanted, and waltz over to shoot of more chunks. He wouldn't even collect all the smaller pieces from the asteroids he destroyed, in favor of coming over to take some of ours.

My question is: is this normal?!

This is my first experience with a person like this. I was just wondering if I should consider myself lucky in all my other encounters and should brace myself for more, or is this pr1ck a rare one?

It's stupid. The asteroid will ALWAYS BE THERE. It's not like it will ever run out. Why be like that? It made gathering just a few cargo holds such a frustrating mess that it's pretty much ruined my desire to play any more today.

Sorry. Had to rant. This guy REALLY got to me.

If I get to a asteroid and someone is on it I wait till their hold is full then move in, I use macros to do everything and my macro doesnt care if I shot it off or someone else did if its called "asteroid" my ship goes after it. I refuse to turn off macro's because someone else decides to be rude and jumps my rock before my hold is full. Most on Kauri will wait till your hold is full (3 to 4min tops running macros) before they move in, the ones that dont I have no pitty for, you jumped my claim and I wont do it manually so your going to have to wait for me to finish..

If someone wants to use a macro to space mine, that's fine, as long as no one else is there. Doing like you said sounds perfectly acceptable. However, going to an asteroid that already has two or three people there and just turning on your macro and wandering off...

That's just rude.

Too bad there is no way to grab those players, drag their virtual selves out into the virtual street, and vitually shoot them. I know that's a bit strong here, but this guy KEEPS doing it!

This might give them the idea

1. get a b-wing or krayt (sorry if you are imperial, multigun ships work best for this) could try a crewed Y-8 with elite lasers

2. load every port with mining lasers (and get a gunner for the krayt if you can)

3. launch and run Wo3 (this does effect mining lasers)

4. rip the asteroid apart, don't chase anything just blow the chunks off and keep slamming it with fire until it pops, keep doing this ad nauseum

5. hit IFF cause you prolly just spawned a crapload of asteroid bandits

they want to chase chunks, fine.... givethem more than they can handle, then get the bandits to annoy them to death

Had this happen to me the other night as well I politely asked him to please chase his own cunks and for the most part he didn't really interfear (SP?). I've only had this happen once asI'm a heavy space miner and it really hasn't seemed to catch on in my server (I suspect that will change with people needing VRKs) what I find really annoying is the people who don't kill the Bandits they spawn. I know in my Kimo with 2 Mark IIIs and WO3and a tractor beam I can take on tier 4bandits and mop them up pretty fast so if you are mining with a 3-4 gun ship and 1 of those guns is a heavy damage dealer then please don't leave your mess for others to clean up.I find other people who would do this rude and would consider /duel them if they did it contently at an asteroid I was mining.

i never had this prob with mining, but trust me these people dont just steel rock

about 1.5 month ago i was in kashyyk blowing up mercinary frieter convoys in my longprobe trying find good parts and cash for my heavy-X

every time id take down third gun on the frieter escort a group jsf's would swoop in and clean my kills

so id moved to next convoy while they where having fun again theyed swoop in as i finished last gun.

i messaged them they said rebs aint alloud play game that they would leave if i dueled them all at once, ya right.

but for mining i use my heavy-X with lasers on all three weapon points and some heavy yeild proton3 missiles for those pirates again 3 mining lazers at once even mk1's will make fast haste of a tier 4 pirate

As for space mining, I generally follow the rule of mining your own rocks that you lodge out. That being said, there should be no rule as to "this asteroid is mine to mine" since one can only collect so much before returning to land, therefore one can't effectively camp an asteroid.

It does seem that those who are normally mining asteroids, as this discussion emanates, are true gentleman players in the game and those that are out to rip a quick fortune from the recent VRK windfall are to blame. Asking these players to assume some measure of etiquette is probably futile.

Its a problem that all MMOGs have had, and will continue to suffer from until the game development community finds a player-oriented solution for retribution.

Sometimes less...perceptive...pilots will just chase down rocks they see on their radar mistakenly thinking they are their own. Just playing devil's advocate, its entirely possible that he didn't care too. Some people don't really have good situational awareness in space and just go after every blip they see.

Did you try asking him to stay to his own asteroids? Its not normal and I would get upset at the same thing. Its really not worth it. Usually if I see someone is being a pain I find another asteroid to mine from or I go do something else.

I've mostly had the same experiences you have. Where folks would take turns shooting off a medium chunk and we'd all work on our own chunks. If I happen to come across someone like you did I might send them a tell asking them nicely to share the asteroid. However if they continued to keep shooting the ones I broke off I'd just go mine another asteroid, there is almost always a second asteroid some where in the sector.

I'm with you on noticing a disturbing trend lately in mining etiquette. Generally if I cruise up to mine an asteroid and someone else is there, we do exactly what you do, and that is mine in turns. Seems thelonger timepilots do this general sharing without any discussion, and I have more difficulty with the 'newer' pilots trying to be 'rock hogs'.

I think this is linked to the need for people to repair their reward Skiffs now that there are so many people with destroyed ones from their Mustafar runs. As, I have only seen this type of behavior at the Petrochemicaland Carbonaceous more prevalently lately.

From my own experience, I met up with 2 other pilots out mining and had one in a Rhyk that had 3 mining lasers on board just continuoulsly blasting the 'mother' rock so there were really too many large chunks to be effectively chased down. Worst part was one of these particularasteroids is near the zone boundary, so as to make many of the floating chunks invulnerable and useless.

I usually just wait until they fill their holds and go away, or move onto the other asteroid in the system, but I agree it is frustrating behavior to have to contend with.

If they continually shoot the rocks you try to pick off and it causes you to not be able to mine, report them for harassment. Use the harrassment report where you have to type what is occurring.

If you read their rules on harassment that come up before you get to type, this kind of behavior would fall under their guidelines. I'm not saying this will 100 percent help but it is your best option other than asking the person to be more civil in their actions.

I tried mining the other Petrochemical asteroid, (funny you mentioned that and Carboneceous, as those are the two I'm trying to get for restoration kits to make some money on the side,) but there were too many hostile spawns in that area to mine effectively. I went back to the first asteroid and managed to get the amount I needed and moved on to Naboo space for the Carboneceous.

Guess who showed up at that asteroid too?

/sigh

I'll try talking to him first, if not I will most certainly, gladly report him for harrassment. Jsut being careless or a newbie is not reason enough to get other people this frustrated.

If there are one or two other people hitting an astroid that I need I'll blast of my chunk and let it drift 1k away from the main astroid then I'll start to harvest. that way I don't scope up other peoples astroids by mistake.

However, while I don't doubt that player bandits are low down and dirty little bas-tards, I do feel that it is nothing more than pirates being pirates. We have to remember that not everyone plays by our rules. But as long as they play by SOEs rules they don't have to play by ours
