Thread: Im looking for constructive idea's on using the Y-8
Elite Mining Laser in upper turret
Tractor Beam in Forward Cannon(Pilot Controled)
High level Weapon in lower turret(defence)
The upper turret can't fire below the ship's horizon, but if your ship is below the asteroid's horizon, the turret can get an excelent shot, once a chunk is broken off, tractor it in with the forward cannon. When pirates(Asteroid Bandits) come after you, stop mining and have your gunners kill them off. Then resume the job.

Once they fix the bug which makes the Y-8 incapable of mining, here's how I see it working.

I would have thought having the big mining laser continualy firing at the asteroid from the pilot seat while the 2 turrets pick up the pieces with the tractor beam's (though at present i only have 1).
Because the main mining laser would mean the ship wouldnt have to move in order to get the pieces it would just need to sit there and hit the asteroid and as pieces come off the 2 turrets can pull them in with the tractor beam's. I think this way would be more efficient though i havnt really tested if this works yet due to the fact i only have one tractor beam and a lack of crew to test it with, though saying that i do see a problem with the mobility of the turrets and of course having all mining equipment installed means i would need to find another ship to take out the pirates which come in for the kill while im mining.

flat out, the Y-8 is a huge vessel, it really deserves more than two turrets
Cant disagree with that to be honest, though at the moment we dont have more turrets so im trying to look for tactics to use while we are waiting for it to fixed asuming it is going to be fixed.
Im going to try and get a few people up im my Y-8 for some mining later today and i will post anything i find in here about what tactics i used and worked and what didnt work.
It's sad that people are more efficient with a refitted Krayt in mining than they are in a ship supposedly designed for that purpose.
Its like the developers didn't even think about how something like this should function. If we keep the same ship layout, then to make this puppy work a little better, we'd need a big laser facing forward for the pilot to use to break big pieces off with. There would be 2 turrets on the SIDES of the ship to cover each hemisphere, and those turrets would be equipped with a mining laser and a tractor beam. The person in the turret makes little rocks out of the big ones, then toggles over to the tractor beam for harvesting. ANd this turret configuration would make this ship truly unique.
And if they wanted to add purely defensive turrets, then that would make it even better still.
That way it is balanced and not some super-ship with tons of turrets.

Not too different from Flying a Nova and knowing how to position the craft so the turrets can be most effective. You would need 3-4 people for the Y-8, 1 person for the B and 1 person for the X - Total of 5-6 people. But, this could prove to be highly effective, you would be able to smash the asteroid quickly, and as the pc's fly around you your ship could pick them up into its hold with the 3 tractor beams.
This could be the most fun, but really the Y-8 should be able to work independantly.
The way I have mine set up right now and it woeks as good as it can, I guess is:
a big mining laster under the pilot's control, a tractor beam in the upper turret and a large weapon in the bottom for defense.
It works ok, but still not even close to what I can do in my Rihx. It took literally almost a half hour to get 1000 units in the Y-8.

Ok first off lets start with the basics:
- Equipment : equipping your ship should be childsplay but a lot of people make the mistake of installing a tractor beam ((THIS IS BUGGED)) as far as i know the tracktor beam is only usefull for starfighters, heres what you should be fitted out with (bare minimum)
- reactor
- engin
- shield
- capacitor
- 2X strong (pob) cannons (these are your defence turrents upper/downer)
- 1x mkII or elite mining laser
- droid interface
- droid computer v6
- cargo hold (Large or y-8 compatible)
- in placement of lower turrent you can equip a PLAYER MADE tractorbeam. this is controled from the pilot control by binding a key to tractorbeam.
- tractor beam can be bound to a key useing the keybind tool But you must make the toggel macro as the command from the menu is a little bugged cos it only works one way HOWEVER here is the magical macro command /ship weapon toggleTractor (use a cap T)
- reactor
this is the bare minimum you need, you can fit it out with anything else you need afterthat is your choice.
Equiping your guns must be done in order.
- Droid commands: no pilot should be without a onboard
computer or astromech droid, these AI systems are Integrule to a ships
system. each command can be used by any pilot (reb/imp/free) and you
can buy chips form almost any one who can program them. here are the
droid commands (program chips) you will need.
- Imperial commands
- weapon overload - 3
- engin overload - 3 (optional)
- weapon overload - 3
- freelance
- capacitor overload - 4
- reactor overload - 4
- Capacitor >> shield Shunt - 4
- capacitor overload - 4
- rebel
- none they all suck
- none they all suck
- Imperial commands
after your droid is programed with these 5 commands (you
should also think about the counter commands they can help if your
systems are low) you can activate them at the opperations pannel at the
front of the ship. each command will take a number of seconds to
compleat but the most effective ones would be the capacitor and weapons
overload.
note
don't be tempted to use engin or weapon overload - 4 as they are less effective then 3, (bug i think) but they will drain a lot of reactor juce and cause your systems to shut down.
- Should you aquire a Crew? : many POB ships do require you
man the ship with no less then 3 people, one pilot & two gunners,
HOWEVER this is not a normal POB ship and it can be manned solo if your
equipped the correct way. (read above equipment guide)
when piloting a Y-8 you need to understand two things 1, your
ship is best piloted in 3rd person & 2. you should always rember to
activate your droid commands before you leave the spacestation
area, if you wish to aquire a crew you may do so a 5man crew is
the optimal for this ship. 2 gunners 1 pilot and 2 helmsmen (one of
whom can leave to fetch sodas or repair the ships systems)
- your crew
- Pilot - the pilot is the main man in the ship as he pilots
the ship and mines the ore, however as the pilot you must take in to
account your fellow crew members and do just one thing, Fly Slow the reason for this is so your defence (turret gunners) can get clean shots at wouldbe attackers. - Gunners - the gunners job is simple if it shoots you, Shoot
back! aided by the pilot flying speed you can be a crack shot or just
another cump behind the turret of a ship. - helmsmen - unlike other POB ships this one can have two
opporations personal, both of whom can activate droid commands, use
comms & activate pilot commands. (also launch missilies i think,
but don't quote me on that one) the helmsmen is the guy to call on when
your shields are badly breached as he can press the might DROID COMMAND
button that shifts power from capacitors to shileds (cap>shield
shunt 4)
this command can get you out of any sticky situation with low shields, and is vitle while mining in kessel for dimond ore.
- Pilot - the pilot is the main man in the ship as he pilots
- your crew
- Known bugs:
- Ship item count error can not drop items in ship. (fixed)
- tractorbeam not working (not sure still)
- crosshair aim off center (better in ship view then cockpit view.)
- Ship item count error can not drop items in ship. (fixed)
If you know any more bugs post them here and ill update. also if you have any extra info for me about y-8 mining please send me
a PM with the details and ill update the guide.
Thanks for looking at the guide i hope it helps.

i would mount an uppper turret a lower turret and a 3rd rear turret that each have 180/360 rotation on them instead fo nasty 90/180 degree nonsence.
there would be a LOOT box in the lower deck
the captain chair would be removed and replaces with a STAND UP consol type thing that when you pilot it you can see from a camera view and skip that UGLY looking bridge view.
in the management screen you will there will be 2 weapon mounts & 2 equipment mounts (for the underbelly cannon)
weapon 0 - upper turret (mining laser or weapon turret only)
weapon 1 - lower turret (mining laser or weapon turret only)
equipment 0 - tractorbeam
equipment 1 - mining laser
