not sure if they changed it recently but as soon as you train the first skill that takes SW xp you'll lose all the banked xp you have except double of the skill you train. example, the first tier skills take 20k xp so you'll end up with only 40k xp banked after training 1 skill.
i know a few people that have combat and crafting professions on the same character. you won't have the extra defense, special attacks and the extra health from being level 80 but as long as you group with someone that's level 80 you should do ok with one elite combat master. i would think that TKM would be a good choice for the high defenses but you would lack a strong offense weapon that uses your tk defense/accuracy/speed skill mods, carbines would be good since you wouldn't outdamage the heavy hitters too easy(and pull aggro) in a group but would still pack enough punch to solo some stuff.

This is my alt, so being Mr. Uber wasn't my goal. Ihave a chance for fight or flight against about 90% of all mobs with my DL44 XT, so this works for me. With this setup, I can plant harveys on Dath and Endor. It's tricky, butI've done it. What I could never do is go 100% crafter. You can't move without incap / death.
