Thread: How to solo any mission in SWG:

Provocative thread name, eh? This is mostly in response to all the people who say "it can't be done" or "its too hard!" Well, factis that it is not impossible. In fact, many have done it.

How? What's the trick?

The answer is simple: Practice. A lot of it.

One of the things that a lot of the new pilots with JTL don't realize is that there are a lot of players who have a HUGE step up on them. Many of us have done this before, with harder missions than those that exist now. Where?

Well if you are new to the whole space sim thing, then you probably aren't familiar with X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and X-Wing: Alliance. Many of us played those (I started with XvT) and have had more practice and stick time in the cockpit of an X-Wing or TIE Interceptor or any other ship appearing then we should be willing to admit. And fact was that there are missions in those games that make the ones here in JTL look downright easy.

That's why many players here consider themselves "pilots" despite never having touched the controls of a real contemporary aircraft. We have virtual flown just about everything that has been rendered in code and we know the tricks of the trade and have developed certain skills, like spacial/situational awareness, that take time and present a challenge to new players.

What separates a pilot from a player?

A player has a lot of different missions, including somethat they *need* help with.

A pilot has only two types of missions: Those we have completed and those we will complete. Pilots refuse to admit that they aren't good enough to solo anything that exists, whether its a Super Star Destroyer (loved killing those in the prior games) or whether its YOU in your tricked out 1.5 stat ypr 115+ spd engine JSF. There is no "failing" a mission to a pilot, only "oops, made a mistake, won't happen again."

Over time, all players who enjoy flying will become pilots, attitude and all. If you are having trouble with a mission, try different tactics, try a different ship, try targetting a different enemy first and you will begin to form habits that lead to winning tactics over time. If you just can't figure it out, ask your fellow pilots for tips and tricks. A pilot has an ego and will always answer a polite question with their best suggestion, as part of them always wants to show off. However, if you declare it can't be done, then a pilot will likely respond that "1) yes, it can be done, 2) I did it in a newbie ship with a broken blaster, no shields, and half my engine blown off (and chances are, they really did)," and then leave you hanging, no better than before.

When you feel like it can't be done, remember, others have done it, so you CAN do it too, it just may take you some time developing the abilities that will make you a real killer in space combat. Everyone was a newbie once, just some of us started with it a lot longer ago then you may have. Hang in there, and you'll get it too (and your self respect will grow as you prove it to yourself).

Besides, what fun is it to say "hey, I beat Storm Squadron... with 5 of my closest Ace friends?" Where's the glory in that?

Does anyone remember the mission "Defend the Liberty" from X-Wing: Alliance? That mission sucked, and there were so many at the end of XvT that I can't remember that took me many tries to finally win, but I got them, solo, and and now sneer at the idea of "unbeatable mission."

You will too, in time.

I just woke up a while ago, so I just skimmed it, but, have you tried to solo the last blackscale mission, w/o bomber strike 3?

I'm sure there are things that can't be soloed ... but for JtL you would have to design it that way, then OVERdesign it that way. It took a long time, but I managed to solo the 4444 RSF mission (and it took an even longer time because I ran out of time once - the next time I pushed the pace more in my hit & run / joust tactics, since I knew I only had so long to take out 10 fighters and 2 gunships). The sort of mission you can't do solo is the sort where you have a time limit to kill things that is just too short for a single person.

Nice to see my own thoughts summed up like this Alarien....

I too flew XW Alliance and XWing vs TIE... And Freespace before that and WingCommander... And so on

In my experience there is very few "real" pilots in SWG... Yet in any case

Azzixx = space sim junky

JTLmissions are petty compared to what you find in a single player space sim.

Yes, it can be done. All can be done solo with what is available to you at your current level.These realy hard missions are just puzzles to be solved.

First, I'm sick of the whinning too...

That said.. gee, you sound humble don't you? And space sim stuff is based on skill, some people just plain never will be excellent pilots, no matter how much they practice, so don't act so condesending to them.

You obviously missed the point. Humble and Pilot are words that don't belong in the same sentence.

And if you paid close attention, you'll see I wasn't condescending, at least, not in that post.

Meh, you know, Pre-CU PvP experts thought they were something special for being an expert at manipulating the mechanics of a video game too. I'm really not impressed by the kind of lone wolf, I can do it alone so I'm better than you, attitude.

My guild leader is an MMORPG junkie, he's got three master pilots with two more on the way up. His best time to date is Novice to Corvette ready 4444 Crimson Pheonix Rebel Pilot in about20 solid hours solo without double xp. I started his Imperial Pilot in Storm Squadron and stopped at 1111 before giving it back over to him, the next afternoon, he was at 3334 cursing my name six ways to Sunday for sticking him with that mess of escort missions. Had he not needed that pilot for more than just Droid Commands for the guild, he'd have probably mastered Imperial Pilot that night.

He can be an ass,and he'll be the first person toadmit he's amazedpeople stick with the guild becausehe's as demanding as he is. However, never in the two years I've been in his guild, has he ever once been remotely condescending. He'll push to get the best we can give, but never belittles anyone because they're not at his level. You managed to make yourself a complete fool in your post by imagining your ability with a video game somehow makes you special.

Christ, I trained for six weeks on XvT: Balance of Power before I got into JTL, and I took on and took out Star Destroyers in that game too. I miss having to go in against that thing pulling its teeth one turret at a time to open a blind spot for me to take it down. I still have nightmares about the upgraded version of the Nebulon-B from that game. I'd love it if the ISD in this game were even a shadow of a challenge equal to that. 100 guns on a JTL Star Destroyer, and I can kill it without ever disabling one. How lame is that? If that thing were to actually have the ability to maneuver? I'd shiver, right before I flew into a hail of blaster fire.

If being a pilot means being that level of assinine, I'll stick with being a player, thanks.

You're right. Some people will never be excellent pilots. I'm one of them. My system simply cannot handle certain areas (Dathomir, in general, comes to mind immediately). I'm not particularly good at shooting things, but I know how my ships work and how my droids work. If you put something in front of me, it will die. Maybe not as fast as some of the other pilots here, but sooner or later I will destroy it. Not everyone will be an excellent pilot. But the PvE missions are fairly forgiving, and ANYONE can solo them if they just practice. Practice, and learn from those who know more than you.

Rapax, how long ago was it that I contacted you about the TIE Fighter? When I did that, I was quitting Storm Squadron because it was too hard. I had to have a lot of help to get through Inquisition shortly after that. Today, I'm soloing Inquisition with my alt, and having a breeze of it. I'm going to do CorSec next to get the full Triple Mastery bonus (already soloed my way through Crimson Phoenix), then I'm going back to kick Storm Squadron's butt. Anyone can do this. All they have to do is practice, and learn. Read these forums. Read the FAQ. Read the FAQ three or four times. I firmly believe that there is very little in JTL that I could not solo, and I am by no means an excellent pilot.

I've no doubt I could solo a gunboat (My ship ain't top of the line) given I had enough time, but I've only got an hour a day or so to play! I can't stick around to solo a gunboat just to prove I can. And as for missions, I get help on anything it's obvious it would take me more than the first try to adapt to to beat it, because of my lack of time.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but I guess a lot of people just don't get the point of the post. If you thought it was condescending, well, you need a bit thicker skin and less reactionary reading, as it wasn't condescending or meant that way.

:: Sigh ::
