Yes, yes... not about the latest and greated RE'd component, or how to kill the 'vette solo, or anything of the sort.
I just wanna know if you fly with the cockpit on or off, just because. I've found that JtL, at least, to be more fun with it on, oddly enough.

Off here 95% of the time. I will leave it on (in some ships) if I'm just poking around for fun. But seriously, in some ships (like the firespray) you lose nearly 50% of the screen. The Imperial ships aren't so bad in that regard.

I fly all my Imp ships with it on, it just feels right and is so much more imersive=) WhenI did Freelancer with my alt, I had to turn them off, you can't see crap, lol.

off most times so that I have a better view...but you cant turn it off in the YT1300 so instead I zoom all the way out so that I can get a good view of my targets and the line of fire for my gunners.

I prefer it on. Unfortunately, I've got disruptors, and the flash from disruptors on imperial craft is BLINDING. With the cockpit off, the flash is much lower.

No kidding. I've found that it's quite obstrusive in some ships. Beingthe lazy pilot I am, I've only just recently gotten around to upgrading my Scyk (with really quite decent visibility) to a Dunelizard (which is... less good), and it took awhile to adjust. I think I like having the cockpit on better still, though. The yacht's the worst, IMNSHO.
I've also found that (at least with some ships) panning your view up a little helps a great deal, though it does make flying at a stationary target somewhat disorienting, as well as relocate your crosshairs to the lower half of the screen. Still, it's a pretty decent tradeoff for realism freaks like me

lol yeah the Sorosub is pretty bad
Honestly, what I tend to do is remove the cockpit while in battles, but I usally put it back on for the trips to and from the starports when I'm just cruising.

It completely depends on the ship, for me... I've started toying with a dunelizard, and I tend to keep the cockpit off in that one, as I did for my rihkxyrk. In the Krayt, I keep the cockpit on, since you get a decent field of view. Generally I find the cockpits more immersive, adding to the realism... so I only turn them off for combat if they're too restrictive.

Rebel Ships = Off
Privateer Ships = Off
Imperial = On
Multi-Player Ships = 3rd person
Most Rebel and Privateer ships give up too much of the screen to fight well with the cockpit on. Tie Fighters have excellent visability and so I will primarily fly with the frame on for that extra touch of imersion. It is annoying that you can't turn Multi-Player ship frames off since they seem to think we are all ewoks and as such should have 50% of the screen taken up with consoles since we have to look up to see over the flight controls. If you could focus your field of view so that all ships use a minimal amount of screen (like the ties) and then be able to expand the field of view to include more of the cockpit if you choose that would be a vast improvement. Instead many ships start at 30% or more being flight controls and you can expand to take in, wait for it, more flight controls.

It hasn't been mentioned much in this thread, but people there are people that think you are less of a pilot for flying with it off, and you are in a sense cheating. I just wanted to state that it isn't cheating and it doesn't mean you are a bad pilot for turning it off. Remember that a real pilot can tilt his head and get a better view of the space around him then you can on a computer monitor, so to compensate, you can remove the cockpit to increase your field of view forward instead of side to side. It would be nice if SWG supported dual monitors and you could see side or top views.

It's really a visual preference. I don't see how anyone can call it cheating. You generally aquire targets with "tab" and "z" etc anyway. The target selector box and firing solution reticle appear overtop of the cockpit anyway. And you're right about the lack of head mobility in this simulation.

As an aside, that is exactly why I prefer a 3rd personchase or isometric view in RPGs. It's not a perfect solution, but it is a rough approxmiation of how, in real life, you have a good sense of what's going on around you even if it's out of your field of vision.
