Another tactic would be to get the gunboat to chase you, try to stay around 700 meters ahead of it, this gives you a two hundred meter cushion before the gunboat can fire on you, allowing you some manuvering capability. Have a friend tail the gunboat just close enough to start taking its turrets out.
If you have a friend with an Aggressor/Y-Wing/Krayt, have them fly along side of you while the gunner in the turreted ship takes out the FireSprays which are also probably tailing you. Once they're gone, your turreted friend can help with takeing the gunboat out.
Once the turrets are gone on the gunboat, you can all safely approach it and destroy it.
Note: Occasionally, the gunboat will change aggro and go after the person putting the hurt on it. In that situation, you simply switch places, have them drag the gunboat and you go after the turrets.

Excellent strategy, almost exactly what I planned on doing with my second pilot to go through SA. Then I heard of a bug that lets you sneak past this mission, tested it verified and reported it. If I could go back and do this, I would, since I prefer to beat it straight up, but I also wanted the presence of a game breaker bug reported.
Best of luck to the person stuck, I highly recommend giving Nicolas/Jaecob's idea a go, it looks solid.
PS no I won't tell how to get past the mission

I just pile in with a firespray let rip with 2xMk2 spacebombs and both guns....that seems to do the trick every time

Not everyone has a Master friend they can call on, and not all Masters fly a FireSpray.

the easiest thing would be to equip your dune lizard, take out the firesprays (if you have to run for ti the firesprays whould catch you before the gunboat does) and then when thats done fly right up to the gunboats and get inside it, match speed, and then match any manuvers it makes while you pound it from withen. its cheap but it works and if its the only way you can do it then go for it.

You're on bloodfin right? My name is Lodo on there. Send me a tell next time i'm on, i haven't had the internet in a week due to the idiocy of the college i attend. I'll help you out if you are still having trouble with it.
If its the mission i'm thinking of i did it with 2 other pilots, however the gunships may be better now. Not too long ago though i took a tier 5 imperial gunship down to about half strength with my Krayt before having to make a run for it. (I just popped in behind it and started firing.)

I'm a 4/4/4/4 Freelance Pilot flying for the Smugglers Alliance. I haven't been able to start my Masters quest yet, because the "finishing" quest for my last Tier 4 box has me taking out first a group of Imperial Ships led by a Tier 5 Oppressor (not too tough...), and then move on to 3 CorSec FireSprays and a CorSec GunBoat. I tried the mission 4 times with pilots who I consider to be some of the better ones out there - they were all masters.....for some reason, we just couldn't get it done. It just slaughtered us....the two master pilots said they didn't ever remember GunBoats being that tough - are we doing something wrong? Is there a certain tactic we need to be using?
Thanks in advance!

Ive just got through that mission. For what its worth, this was my tactics...
Equipment: Rik with 86 speed engine (bought), 2 RE level 6 guns, 1 Borstel diruptor, Mark 3 concussion missles, 1.9K F/B bought shield, Tier 2 reward booster, 1.2k armour F/B
Doid commands: Weapon overload 3, Engine overload2, Cap overcharge 3; Cap to shield shunt 3, rector overload 2.
Tactics: I line myself up about 1k from the gunboat (from behind and below for the first run) - -ignored completely the firesprays. Start in at max speed - -all gund blazing targetting the gunboats engines. If i got the chance for a concussionmissle shot, I took it.
One at the gunfboat, stopped firing and hit boost - tried to dive slightly to keep on teh underside of its firing arc. This wasnt easy as the gunboat chases you - -remembering this, you DONT stop and turn round when your booster runs out - -the gunboat will be on you before your shields have regenerated. Kepp going until almost 2k away and use cap to shield shunt to restore your shields.
Repeat until gunboat is incapped.
Go after the firesprays - -with luck the gunboat will explode whilst you are killing the firesprays, thus saving you some more hurt trying to take its systems down.
if it doesn,t just repeat the strafing tactics, its easier this time as the darned thing doesnt chase you!
good luck.

I took it out for a friends mission using jousting technique with my krayt, had a few risky moments though using crafted 2300 shields and capacitor to shield 4, took about 3-4 turns to shoot the engine, after that its toast
this gunboat beats all you have seen in kessel or anywhere else and manoveurs better than a tier 5 b-wing, and has about 700 speed, not to speak of the firepower it uses
the escort is not worth speaking of, npc firesprays are only a few shots to blow up, such big targets, its harder to miss them then to hit

Yeah me and my 2 master pilot friends got this on the second try.
1 Krayt, 1 Rix (me) and an Xwing.
Both my Krayt and Xwing friends got destroyed once each but they returned to re-engage the gunboat while i nearly died about 12 times.
Heres what we eventually did. We went for the reactor first. The reason is to stop the damn thing from moving so we could attack it at the time and direction of our choosing. From there is was a simple matter of taking down the sheilds and systematically taking down the guns from long range. after that. boom.
Going for the guns first is not a good idea because 1) theres 6 or 7 of them 2) the gunboat chases after you. Taking the reactor first prevents it from running or chasing after you.
last good idea... space bombs... and lots of them. Or if you dont have master pilot friends... ordinance in general. fire and forget allows you to stay as far from the gunboat as long as possible.
good luck

I found two things...
1st, the way to skip the final Tier 4 mission - which I will tell, because of it's simplicity : Just go to the Master Trainer. That's it...you have all 4 Tier 4 boxes, go to him, he'll give you your Master Quests.
The second thing I found, was an incredible pilot. He soloed the two Tier 5 Gunboat escorts and the Imperial Corvette for me in his A-Wing. Was amazing.
