Thread: So I took up my YT-1300 with a crew of 5...

I have to say that it was extremely dissapointing. I had myself as a pilot, and guildees crewing- Xivqi copiloting, Dazaark and Goder gunning, and Balkoth repairing. Overall, we should have EASILY outdone any JSF or Rihk or anythign smaller than us really.

But the fact is, it just doesnt happen.

We were hunting gunboats in Kessel.Xiv hadCap Overload Four, Weapon Overload Three, andEngine Overload Three running, and had Cap to Shield Shunt Four standing by. We found an Imperial Gunboat and I initiated the attack with a cuncusion missile. I instructed my guinners to aim for the shield and then take out weapon 2, then the engine. We began the attack, zooming by the thing very quickly. but it simply ate through the shields way too fast- we had 2.4 k protection and 1k armor on both sides. we lost all of our rear armor and most of our front armor, and while we did have a very good copilot, it was simple impossible to jink around in it to avoid the lasers and the shield shunt didnt always activate in time or get enough of the damage.. Now, dont get me wrong, this is the first time I have ever tried this with a YT1300, so I am not at all experianced with this. But it seems like if we had had all five crew members in Rihks or Krayts instead of in the YT 1300, we would have killed the thing much faster.

Now each time we renewed the attack we had full everything- cap shileds boosters. Droid was at the ready. Witht he exception of some semi- anoying plasma leaks that our engineer couldnt fix we were all good. Then we would get MAULED by this thing. I couldnt aqcuire a missile lock going at such a high speed, and when I tried to match his speed and trail behind him he turned slithly, thus making him get closer to us and getin range of his guns and sending the paln to hell, as I had to burn the boosters for quick accleration, and then we ran out fo energy still in range of his guns.

I knwo there is a thread about this, but with that size crew, a YT, Deci or Nova ought to be able to at least equal a gunboat is shields and damage output. I am sure we will get nmore efficient, btu I still doubt that we will be better than if we had us all in our fighters.

man, I feel ya on that one POBs are not so much fun for the tier 4 & 5 stuff.

I hope something happens to change that. I mean, serously, what is a star wars game MMORPG without a fun multi-person ship?

Im not asking for the POBs to go toe to toe with a decked out PvP fighter, just something that can help out when other pilots take on an IDS, or a 'vette, or even a gunboat with some escorts.

then again, perhaps we can, and just havn't figured it out yet

There are a few good ways to hunt gunboats with the YT, I've done it in kessel with 2 others as crew, and you don't a co-pilot since either turret operator can do all the droid commands.

Basically, what I do as the pilot, is come up below, and match speed, and give the order to attack about 400m or so, while rolled 90 degrees to the side so both turrets can hit the thing broadside. I use numlock to engage the 'track target' feature while zoomed out in third person, and can keep an eye for manuvers. Its important to start bugging out fast if it rolls, and be very careful when you an attempt at shadowing. Sometimes it will roll and point just the rear gun at you, and you can move quickly into the blind spot below without getting too shot up, saving time on a second setup. If you even tap the boosters you'll overshoot and be hit by the forward guns, so you have to do with with the throttle control only.

Likewise, watch for when the reactor is about to blow, because if you stop when it stops you will easily overshoot into the bow gun range just on drift alone - even if you were only matching its speed before.

Hunting T5 gunboats is still one of the most fun activities I use my YT for, though I haven't used it too much for a good while. I wouldn't bother with trying for manuvers you can use the missiles for, though its fun to experiment if your components can take the wear.

I completely agree. They simply aren't valid craft for any situation. That goes for the Y-8 as well.

padren has it right, any turreted ship can make a gunboat look fairly stupid.

check out my guide on the ARC here:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=pilot&message.id=71590

a lot of the principles I thought of came from flying the ARC and my few trips in my MP ship. The basics still apply for either one, but the maneuverabilty of the ARCmakes it easier.

My biggest problem with getting into the blind spotunder gunboats in an MP ship had to be slowing thething down. you have to hit matchspeed when you're still a long way behind and below to "park" in the right spot.

Also, when a gunnie turns, thats not necessarily the time to run as padren said. It's pretty easy to learn to feather the throttle and turn with him, staying in the blindspot. You're the pilot, focus on flying, and you can do some neat things since you dont have to worry about aiming, just making sure the gunners have some sort of line.

I use a throttle controller so I have a much easier time with fine tuning my speed. but yeah you just settle into the blind spots and pound away.

Ok, well I never really got the blindspot deal. I would usually get vaped the second I attacked. But I willl give it a try next time we go out.

i really think it'd be beneficial for space as a whole if POB elite equipment, particularly armor, was made significantly stronger. like by a factor of 5.

there's always going to be a strategy to make something viable with what you have, especially vs the computer, but these ships really do need some help.

anything you can do in a fully crewed POB, I can do better in my JSF.

This morning, I soloed the fighter escorts and both gunboat escorts for the vette in kessel. I was working on a plan to solo the vette, but two other JSF's showed up and helped me out.

I wouldn't even DREAM of attempting that in a POB.

Not to mention that anything you can do in a fully crewed POB you can do WAY better if all of the crew is in fighters.

When you get right down to it, for every required crew member of a ship, it should reach the same combat power as if it were that many fighters.

So a 4 man ship should have the same effectiveness as 4 one man fighters.

This is not the case. Not by a long shot.

I have a Deci with 3.4k Shield (elite) and 3k armor (elite), we take on gunboats and corevettes with no problem. Thanks to shield shunt. A good co-pilot and great weapons.

Elite null bolt (nice and blue).

I have to say, that I go out with my guild in our flagship (a Decimator) alot, with a crew of three (since top turret gunner can use droid and pilot commands) it's fairly decent. We use teamspeak, which makes things alot easier in combat, of course. But we can make a huge mess of kessel... takes alot of practice on the part of the pilot and the gunners though.

A multiplayer ship comes with three missile launchers for a reason, use them well. The first thing those missiles should be doing is opening a blindspot for the pilot to park in. Target two should be a missile or two into the engine to either damage or disable it to keep that thing from turning on you easily. Two or three missiles on approach and let the gunners mop it up. Get decent crafted missiles with high damage and reload counts, and you should be able to function out there comfortably.

A POB isn't a fighter, strafing with it is an exercise in futility. Punch a hole in the target's defenses and stay there.

Be mindful that a POB ship ISN'T a gunboat. An Imperial gunboat is a 6 gun ship to your two, if you get into a slugging match, its going to r@pe you.
