Thread: Confused Imperial Pilot

SoI bought JTL on release along with a friend of mine and we both decided we wanted to be Imperial Pilots. We very quickly got boxes 2222, upgraded ours ships, and were looking forward to making Master in a few weeks.

Frustration then set in as try as we might neither of us (and together) could complete the first tier 3 mission. The ships we had to fight were not difficult it is just that there were wave after wave and we could not kill them fast enough. We often ended up out of range of the transport.

JTL simply became a free travel pass between starports until yesterday when I decided to have another go...

So I ask my guild and I get a neutral Master Pilot to help me. I took the mission (an escort mission) and we grouped and went for it. The mission seemed to go on forages - every time we 'completed' it and the escorted ship hit hyperspace I got a new set of co-ords and the mission more or less repeated itself. In the end this guy, who was very patient and helpful, suggested that it might not be the tier 3 mission at all but something simply designed to give me xp. I have the required 200000 combat xp for the box already.

I landed and went back to the NPC who told me I had failed the mission yet we had been up there for ages, killed all the opposition and several (I guess 4 or 5) escorted ships had escaped.

Please help!

I get the mission by talking to Captain Denner (Storm Squadron Pilot Trainer) on Yavin IV - is this right? I have forgotten the sequence of events that led me to him.

Thanks

The Tier3 missions for imp pilot are frustratingly long.

Im soloing up a friends char to master imp pilot, doing Black Epsilon Squadron.

Did the Second Tier3 mission last night, damn it was a pain.

It was the one where your supose to start a war between Nym and Hutt.

Failed it the first time on the last WP after about an hours flying,i was appairantly supose to kill the Nyms and not the Hutts.

Took note of how long it was, Started with a capture againstfive Tier 3s, then on to aescort, 13 spawns offour Tier 3s, After that abattle, with5 spawns ofthree Tier 3s andone Tier 4.

Going on with yet another escort, with13 spawns ofthree Tier 3s andone tier4 and ending with a space battle with eight Tier 4s plus four hutts which you cant hit but have to make sure they dont die (T3s).

It wasone damn annoying mission, noRebel mission comes close to beeing this stupid.

It wasnt that hard, i did it solowith a TIE/In at 2223 with EO3, WO3, but i cant say i fell asleep exactly.

Well i guess it felt good when i got passed it, but it was daaaaaaamn long.

Remeber. you lived in a time of kiwi.

So you've just done the first tier 3 mission - excellent.

Am I getting the mission off the correct NPC and how many escorts does it comprise of?

Thanks

Teir 3 is a brick wall to many new pilots, and imperial teir3's are notorious for being either long, and/or difficult. Storm squadron the most notorious.

In general, plan to set aside about 45 mins to an hour to complete each one. Completion of a teir 3 mission rewards you wtih a new skill box. They do not require exp.

As to which ones to take, to an experienced pilot with alot of equipment and droid commands stocked up somewhere i would say, Equipment first, droid commands second, bomberstrike 3rd, and Tie Interceptor as your 4th and final box to train in teir 3. To someone not as experienced i would probably say interceptor first, equipment 2nd, droidcommands 3rd, and bomberstrike 4th.

Offhand i think you need to do two things by what ive read here.
1.) look to upgrade your equipment
2.) start looking to run some droid commands, they help greatly.

General mission help.

- Disable your targets first. Killing takes twice as long. I tend to shoot at the reactor and let them drift. Disabled ships auto distruct in about 5 mins.

- Delivery missions. On delivery missions you'll typically get an endless spawning wave after wave of fighters. One trick i learned a long time ago in this scenario is to simply hyper to another quadrant in the SAME sector, and simply approach the delivery point from another direction. 90% of the time, this will lose the endless spawning waves and you can deliver and get out of dodge.

- Think. Its not always as simple as, "there they are, shoot them". Often who you shoot first, and how you go about doing it can make a diffrence. On a tactical level, think of each mission as a puzzle that needs to be solved

when disabling ships on escort missions disable them all but 1 from each wave, take the 1 thats left down to under 20% engine power and leave him alone. do the same to the second wave and then there should be only 2 enemy ships flying around both under 20% engine power and they shouldnt cause much problem. and then in leaving those 2 ships up No more waves will spawn until the escort leaves and a new mission objective.

Excellent advice thanks. We both played a lot with our ships though and do have pretty good Tie/Ins - fast and lightweight and weapons that do 1100 to 1500 damage.

Tactically I definitely need help, I can fly and shoot straight but have never used a droid command yet.

I think all this is missing my point though.

1. Am I taking the correct mission from the correct NPC to fill a tier 3 box?

and now you've added it

2. How do I change this mission to one of the other tier 3 boxes if I don't have to do them in sequence? Who do I talk to, where do I go?

Thanks for the replies so far.

If this mission was from a list of choices of missions, then it was a Duty mission and designed to give you esperience. If it was the only mission your trainer would give you, with an accompanying dialog explaining it and its importance, then it is your "story" mission and needed to advance.

If you began Pilot in Bestine, then you are in Storm Squad and this is probably the correct trainer.

Not sure if this helps you, but on the inquisitor path, there are several missions, where you have to ignore the incoming waves, and do your mission. For example, one mission, was to dock with a shuttle, but before you get to the wp, it would spawn (never ending) waves of rebel fighters. If you ignore the fighters, and get your wing mate to pick them off your back, till you get to the waypoint, then you'll complete that part of it. I know nothing of the bestine path though, hope this helps you.

Also, get used to having droid programs on your imperial craft, it will help you tons.

> 1. Am I taking the correct mission from the correct NPC to fill a tier 3 box?

Yes, most likely. The entire tier 3, at least for the imps is do a series of missions, get a box for free. It is a pain at the begining because you hit the 200k mark fast and you sit there wanting to complain about not baeing able to train, but then you realize that you are getting free exp to spend on your first tier 4 skill, which requires a cool mil exp. They are long, tough, and bounce between total frustration and boredom. It has been mentioned to death so far, but to stress what all these wise people are saying: Disabling a ship is your friend. If you don't HAVE to kill them, disable and move on. If you do, disable and move on, then come back once noone is moving and kill them. Hyperspace is your friend. If you have to go from point A to point B and you keep getting jumped, hold out until the second wave comes and hyperspace to another sector in the same system, then fly around the mass of ships. This is handy more than a couple of times in the Inquisition missions.

> 2. How do I change this mission to one of the other tier 3 boxes if I don't have to do them in sequence? Who do I talk to, where do I go?

The guy you get your misisons from gives you your choice of skills when you complete the mission, so pick what you want. Personally, I went ships, equipment, commands, and am will get droids when I finish the fourth mission. Not sure about the other squadrons, but bstrike is insanly helpful in the third and fourth missions for the inqusition...probably any "take out this gunship and its escorts" mission as it keeps the gunship busy while you kill all his friends. If I had real skill, I might have taken droid commands earlier, but for some reason my mind only recognized the target last punk who shot me, fire, and clear target buttons. Everything else is just scenery to me.
