i have two storys for everyone today, the first is when i formed a large and pretty powerful group of people and how we got slaughtered to our compleate amazment, and the second was how i amazingly got out of been slaughterd.

the first story:

with dreams of heavy X-Wings in my head i had assembled a team of generaly profesional looking players. First we had two slightly lower level players in light ships, they would make good attackers for thoes pesky tier 5 ships with the space bombs so they dont dropem on the corvett i solo captured (which is pretty easy). and then there was a guy in a heavy Xwing with some pretty deadly weapons, he was a good pilot and could hit hard. a great asset as he could really demolish ships, he genraly killed the same amount as me if not a bunch more ( i wasnt watching his kills). And finaly a POB ship, we were confident in our numbers and i convinced the POB captian who was training some new crewmen that some safe protected intense action would be a great training course, a once in a lifetime (if things had gone according to plan it would of be a once in a life time training experiance for the fledgling crewmembers) So we had two heavy hitters, me and a guy 1 (no names shall be named cause this was embarising as much as it was horrifying) guy 2 and guy 3 as interceptors and tacklers for fighters, and guy 5 and his fledgling crew with the big friggin guns as heavy fire support. I got the corvett mission, grouped our team up, and went at the corvet, the initial fighter escort fell extreamly fast, the team knew what they were doing and we did it well. Gun 5 on the corvet was droped imidiatly along with the two side guns. the shield genorators droped just as fast and the corvett was ours in record time. we had assumed formation around the corvett along with some of the interceptor players right at the far front so they could imidiatly attack the tier 5 fighters, the corvett had 99% system damage. untill... we had expected tier 5 fighters to spawn... but what spawned instead was 2 tier 5 fighters and one *sob* tier 5 ghrag gunship. I quickly told the interceptors to attack thoes fighters and let me and guy 1 concentrate on that gunship. We opend fire, and so did it. Imediatly guy 1's shields started droping like a stock market crash and he pulled off, then thoes guns got on top of me.i shield shunted and corckscrewed out of harms way as best i could as this tier 5 gunship who after geting a solid amount of bombarding was only down to 70% shield, proceaded to chase me and guy 1 blowing our shields as he went. We both IFF spoofed and the tier 5 gunship went for the interceptors, at this time another gunship had spawned along with 2 tier 5 fighters. the interceptors were instantly killed and the second gunship proceaded to maul guy 1 and me, the POB crew ejected without telling the captian and he lost his ship. I was killed and the mission was lost.

second story:

ive taken the mission from that YT-1300 thats patroling kashyyyk station, i had absolutly no trouble with thoes tier 5 fighters, dust under my feet. didnt even get down to 98% shield damage. then i get a message telling me a ghrag gunship is after me. after i pick up my shatterd nerves from this message (after watching what happend to my attempt on doing the heavy x-wing mission with 4 fairly strong fighters and a crewed POB ship ) i proceaded to the waypoint, i planed that if i could take out the engin or reactor really fast i could run away and lick my massive wounds then dive in and out on the gunship till it died. It warped in and engaged me, i took 4 hits from the top gun turret as i bombarded its shield. the eject button then poped up because my booster and capacitor had gone dead, i took my eyes off my health for a split second so i could keep my aim and when i went back my front shield and armor were compleatly depleated. I used the remaining booster power i had left and floored it out, this gunboat still on my tail, compairing how fast i was geting away from it (i was doing 1141) that thing had to be doing 1000+ and when i looked at its shields it said 96%.

the point of all this is what on earth is the weakness in the ghrag gunships... These things are frigging floatinggrim reapers! they have impressive manuverability and speed that would outrun a large portion of the JTL population, their shields stand up to that of a tier 5 imperial gunship, and these things hit like you wouldent belive... frequintly! What on earth is their weakness? was my stratigy flawed on the heavy X-wing quest? Do these gunboats have an easily exploitable blind spot? i would apreciate any help you could offer

No.

Do they have a very difficult to exploit blindspot?

Yes.

Like all Rebel/Castwing style Gunboats, they have no bottom-firing turrets. Unlike most Gunboats in the rest of the galaxy, these will not fly a course, but will hunt you down mercilessly. They are fast, they have ordnance and like using it, and they like to chase one Pilot while rolling their "top" side towards other attacking craft.

I've found the best attack position is to chase one of them that is chasing someone else, coming up from behind (you'd better have a good engine and EO program), and staying below the Gunboat's horizon even as it rolls around trying to get you above it's horizon. If you can do that (congratulations, firstly) then you can deliver some damage to the Gunboat, peel off, and repeat the process.

Target the Engine first, as blowing the Engine will have the fastest effect on the ship. Once it's stopped in space, pound it from below.

Geez i agree with you they are merceles... they dont have a bottom firing turret though? I had no idea about this, i could of sworn it was there. Well i dont relish the idea of checking again mind you

thank you very much, ill see if i can get a guild member ( if on ever comes on) to help me try and take one down. I honistly dont see how im ever gonna beat that heavy X-wing mission though, im starting to get scared of these things. All i find myself doing is looking at my total lack of shield and armor as i run away from these things, tail between my legs.

The x-wing mission is pretty easy once you use a few tricks. First don't fully disable the corvette untill itis about 6.5 to 6k from the rebel station. I like to follow it with only the engines left to disable untill it gets that close. Then when your escorting it the rest of the distance disable the enemy ship instead of blowing them up, the corvette useally finishes them off but it slows down the enemy spawns a bit. Finaly when a gunboat does spawn don't attack it, let it attack the corvette, if it does come after you just fly away from it as fast as you need to keep away from it.

Using those tactics you should only get one or two enemy spawns with the gunboats which makes the mission alot easier. the only dangerious part is when the mission completes the corvette disapears and the gunboats come straight for you, I've taken some armor damage before I get far enough away to be safe when that happens.

Now THATS a stratagy!

Thank you very much for that idea its pretty good, however i dought that disabling the fighters will slow down spawns because if you read my story, there were 2 gunships out there

thank you both, now i might be able to handle them. I'll try that new tactic tommorow got a good fealing about this

now that im on the topic, with the new upgrades to the POB ships coming out, i cant wait to see how a POB ship will one on one these gunboats should be pretty intresting

Edit function on forums come online as you post more.

The gun boats have a speed of approximately 950. This means your fighter has to go at least 1500ish to get in and out of it's weapon range in a reasonable amount of time.Taking on gun boats alone is doable...it just takes a bit of jousting. Once a gun boat starts chasing you, get about 1200 meters ahead of it. Turn around and go head to head. Head for the area just under the gun boat at about 700 meters start firing your guns, and turn on boosters. Jink up to land a few hits on the gun boat then jink down to head for the area under the gun boat. As you pass the gun boat it will Yaw to try to chase you. If you were heading for the area under the gun boat it will not be able to shoot at you at you pass it. Hopefully you boosters are still going. The gunboat should be able to land one or two shots at you when your heading out.
Repeat the process.

The gunboats shouldn't show up untill after a few spawns so disabling instead of blowing them up and letting the corvette finish them off as it flys past should slow down the speed of the enemy spawns a bit, putting off that first gunboat spawn a little.

When the gunboat spawns don't be afraid to let it pound away on the corvette, you should be close to the mission completing if you've waited on the disabling so the corvette should be able to take it or you could get the first one to chase off after you and match speed with it. Should still get the mission complete message soon after that.

I managed to get quite far on that duty with my A-wing but in the end, I just couldn't put out enough damage in time to kill everything soon enough. As for my Heavy X, well it puts out the damage but it really is a big target for those GBs.

Its funny someone should mention this though because tonight I'm actually hosting a 'mini event' where we'll be taking pre-rotw Alliance fighters to try and complete it. I am thinking of frappsing it etc. It should make for an interesting challenge with a squadron of standard x-wings and Y-wing etc vs this.

As for weaknesses to those gunboats, well I try my best to kee beneath them at all times but with the way they manouver, you have to basically make hit and run passes when there are more than one of them spawned.

Additionally, you may care to notice that the Kashhyk system has ample asteroids to hide behind. One of my favourite tactics is to leads them away from the duty spawn waypoint, into those asteroids and weave around. The asteroids 1. provide 'some' cover and 2.limist the gunboat's manouverability.

I reckon I could do this mission solo if I flew a relic, but I don't want to do that. I'll keep going at it with my x-wing I think.
I'd use an A-wing with my frequent wingman, Risian. I bet two A-wings could do it...unfortunately he doesn't have rotw.

Also yes, I agree...aim for the engine first on the gunboats. Additionally, try and score your damage from behind so you have only half as much shielding and armour to kill. Remember all ships (minus the ISD and Vette) have front and back shields/armour which are independant of each other so for example, even if you have a gunboat's shields and armour down to 50% sometimes..you might still not score component damage if you've been attacking from all sides. Concentrate your fire and bringing those things down happens sooner.
