Is the Dunelizard a workable fighter, and if not what's the best fighter for Freelance Pilots.

The Dunelizard is one of the best fighters in the game - high mass, 2 weapon points, and fairly decent speed and manoeverability (don't ask me to spell that when I'm drunk!) make it a pretty good all-rounder.
It's probably not the prettiest looking ship in the game, tho..

For many Privateer pilots the Dunelizard is THE ship. I wont give mine up.

Depends what you mean by Workable. I've used my Dunelizard upto 2-2-1-1. It worked great with the components i had in it, but I was still pretty low level. It all depends on a few things
1) What level pilot are you
2) What type of Components you put in it (i.e. Cert level)
3) The mass of your Dunelizard Chasis
4) What you hoe to accomplish with the ship (i.e. Fast Ship or Powerful Ship) You sometimes have to sacrafice in one department to get better in the other
I just recently upgraded from my Dunelizard to a Light Fighter (Kihraxz) While I llove this new ship style, and how quick it moves with the Mark III compnents I have in it I am limited in my mass and how many weapons I have on it Currently only one set of blasters. My Dunelizard was great because it was fast as well as packed a punch alowed me to have great Mark III weapons 2 sets, and load all the necessary components and still have enough Mass left over that I could probably use it with Mark IV components if necessary.
I personally like the look of the Black sun fighters, but unfortunately you can't unlock them until you get at least 2-1-1-1 and up. My plan after master is to go with a Ixyien fighter since it's a medium fighter which is still fast but has a good amount of punch to it kind of a compromise between Light & Heavy fighters.

The Duneliz is a very nice compromise, but it is impossible to call any ship in any faction the 'best' one in the faction.
If you need just a bit more mass than the Duneliz gives then try an Ixiyen, which is also a very good dog-fighter in capable hands.
If pure speed and handling is your thing, don't forget the Kihraxz. It is too small for most people, but ideal for others.
If you are out to hold the biggest, baddest guns and the strongest, heaviest shields and armor then the Duneliz is obviously wrong for you. You would be the type to hop in a Kinogila when they are available, Rihkxyrk at tier 4, and a Krayt at Master.
The other factions work similarly, as all of the ships are supposed to be on the same sliding scale to balance mass and maneouverability. There are quirks, like the poor handling of a B-Wing vs the better-than-expected handling of a Krayt, but the general scale is still there.
Rather than looking for other people's opinions, I think it would work better for you to experiment with several types of ships in order to find out which one is better for *you*.

The lizard is capable of taking you all the way through master, if that's what you mean. PvPers who fly privateer swear by the style 1 Dunelizard chassis. It really is a marvelous little fighter for Tier 1.
And yes, I flew the Dunelizard through master all three times I did privateer.

I flew my Dune up through master. I tried out the Ixy, but not for long. The Dune was great.

I gave up flying the dunelizard while leveling for the kimo and it's larger mass, but now am retooling my dunelizard and love it still. Fitting it with a pre-nerf re'ed reward engine, re'ed reward shield with 18.17 regen and a coulple of nice re'ed guns and the low profile of stile 1 makes it quite the package.

Looks only. Guna placement is the same, as is mass. Style 1 is the smallest profile freelance ship. Style 2 is the cigar tube shape with nearly double the legnth.

Yes, actually...it changes the size of your hitbox. In PvP this is important, as a smaller ship (or smaller style) is much harder to hit and thus can survive longer. As far as performance/mass/weapons placement, no, there's no difference.

Dune is an awesome ship. Most Freelance pilots keep a Dune around long after they make ace.
