Thread: Freelancers, Deep Space and Faction

I'm an Imperial on the ground and a Master Pilot for CorSec. When I go to Deep Space, I am essentially overt as I would be if I went PvP-Enabled in any other part of space. I run the same risk of being shot down by enemy players. But I do not get faction points in Deep Space while I could anywhere else.

Monsofolexius, I know you are aware of this. Do you know why it's this way? I understand the whole thing about me not having Imperial Prestige to enter Deep Space through the Endor station but why was it made this way? Was a reason given why Master Freelancers who go overt for a chosen faction cannot get FP's in Deep Space, while they can anywhere else? Or was this a dev oversight?

Would the Pilot community be in support of Freelancers getting faction points in Deep Space? Again, we're able to get it everywhere else just like the Alliance and Imperial pilots but for some reason not in Deep Space.

I'm a ground Imp/space Black Epsilon pilot, and I'm in favor of it. If the current design is intentional, I really don't understand the logic behind it. You're up, you're overt, you're participating in the GCW--a state we need to encourage. I don't see why privateers shouldn't be able to earn FP when they're opening themselves to the same risk Rebs and Imps are running.

Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that you were planning to take this up with the devs.

As far as the "if you don't like it, join a faction" argument, I'd like to think that's why I am factioned to the Empire. I just don't particularly care for the TIE models, what's why I'm a Privateer in space.

My better judgement is telling me not to bring movie references into this since it opens up a whole argument over the movies vs. SWG but I can't help it. Han Solo can be considered part of the Smuggler Alliance during Battle of Yavin and pilots a Privateer YT-1300, effectively saving Luke from Vader and assisting in the destruction in the Death Star.

Lando could also have been considered part of the Smuggler Alliance and pilots the Falcon as well during Battle of Endor. It's Lando in the Falcon who destroys the core of the 2nd Death Star.

Both of these people could have been considered Rebels on the ground and Privateers in space who played key roles in space battles. Han Solo even got a medal, how's that for getting Rebel Prestige?

To me presonally this is a really big issue, infact to a master freelance pilot that is factioned on the ground this is probably one of the biggest gripes. I personally understand that there are other bugs out there but this to me is a major problem more so then the MP lacking usefulness. Not to mention that this should not be ahard fix for devs. With this problem you are essentially taking away content from 1/3 of the community.

Lets be honest, you are not stopped from gaining faction points in space (Kessel is quiet nice for this), you are not stopped from participating in GCW type stuff and battles in Deep Space. You are not limited to content. What we are talking if the ability to "farm" faction easier, in a decay-free zone, thats really it.

Its not that I am against the idea, but lets call a spade a spade.

Scenario:

Five Rebel factioned pilots fly into Deep Space. With them is a ground Rebel who is a Privateer. They engage the Imperial Star Destroyer. During the battle, the Rebels are losing when the Privateer suddnely launches his spacebombs, destroying the ISD's systems. Everyone gets around 175+ faction for the success except the Privateer who gets a pat on the back.

Didn't the Privateer contribute to the effort? He should be rewarded accordingly. After all, factioned Privateers in Deep Space have no additional advantages over Imperial and Rebel pilots. They run all the same risks. Instead, they have this no-faction points in Deep Space penalty.

I agree 100%, but I just want to keep in perspective what we are talking about. Like I stated a few times in this thread, I would like to see this changed. And I will bring it up as soon as I get the opportunity.

But lets be honest, this is not about "175 faction points for taking out the ISD" or "taking away content from 1/3 of the community". Its about being able to gather large ammounts of faction in deep space. I am not saying it should not be changed but lets not get too carried away with the analogies everyone.....

it discourages players from going to deep space, so don't be so dismissive. i know more than a few people who would go into the zone but would prefer to bide their time waiting for PVP by getting faction and loot as well. thus, content is not taken away but it is not properly available either, and there have been numerous threads on this in the past.

finally, there are not two sides to this issue, there is one side: players are dealing with an obtuse, unfun (and likely unintentional) mechanic, i mean let's call a spade a spade.

Maybe just give out "Prestige Points" to master pilots that are used to gain entry at a station. That way you don't have to worry about having alliance or imperial prestige to get in at a particular station.

If I'm fighting on the side of rebels, I want to able to earn the same FPs.

My reason for not spending more time in DS is not because of the FP I would not get, it is because of the DS overt bug that can only be solved by redeeding the ship. That causes me more frustration and lost paint jobs than anything else DS-related.

There is almost alway another side to the arguement. I believe Monosofo mentions it in places like this because of the discussions I had in places like this and this, but that might be me getting a bit too self-involved. The jist is that I think there should be some boon for being a factioned pilot in a war, instead of being a freelancer. If you give freelancers all the same benefits, why should players show their support of their faction by joining their faction's navy?

Despite my beliefs on related discussions, this seems like a design flaw/bug. I have no problem with preventing freelancers from getting FP in DS, but it doesn't seem like the system was designed to prevent it, it just..... does.

As a ground neutral, I agreethe perma-overt bug is a much bigger issue personally.

i understand representing both sides of an arguement, however i don't think that is warranted here. it's a mechanic that is not fun for players, does not impugn non privateers whatsoever, and can result in other inconveinecing bugs. furthermore it reeks of being an unintended defect andthus warrants scrutiny from the developers, regardless of the result of said scrutiny or player's opinions to the contrary.

if the result is "working as intended" then perhaps it warrants a balanced treatement. although i don't believe so. imo it should take very little else aside from players not having fun to immediately escalate an issue to the devs attention. if, in the end, there is still a voice for more incentives to join a side, then new incentives that are consistant throughout space can be discussed and implemented. or perhaps the faction farming privateer is in the minority and faction is left entirely to players in their respective armies. these are different points to be made in a different thread though.

and i agree the perma overt bug is a bigger issue. i don't believe anyone asked for this problem to be a particular rank just that it be mentioned, which Monosofo graciously has done.
