I don't think he was that great. I never saw him take down one TIE Aggressor, let alone two at once.

He had a pre-nerf reward engine.

i think he scrambled his iff transponder and thats why everyone else ate it first on the deathstar run before vader finaly figured it out (cant trick daddy can you). its also pretty obvious he had a pre-patch mkII spacebomb rack installed cause he would have had to cough up some other parts to fit the new 15k mass version in his xwing.

No way, the protons' effectiveness vs. shields/armor is too low to penetrate a wet paper bag, let alone a Death Star ventilation shaft.

To really be geeky, why did they even need to follow the trench. Why not simply drop in a few hundred meters shy of it and dump a few in. I think they would have faired better skimming the serface of the death star, rather then being packed into a tight are like that. Also Vader was a ninja looter, he wouldnt let any of his tobies fire at Lukes Xwing. If all 3 of those TIEs would have opend up on him there would have been no way he would have done that shot without soiling his flight suit. Also you can tell those rebel pilots were noobs, they only stabilized their rear deflectors, not adjust more power to the rear like they did to the front when the turbo lasers were firing. This is a easy answer. truly only a true die hard SW fan would be able to answer this.

IT WASNT IN THE SCRIPT!!!

I don't know if that's due to lack of skill, or that short of video games... they didn't exist.

Heck if you want to get technical, even Interceptors aren't supposed to be readily available in this timeline (nor are B-Wings, A-Wings, etc.).

Either way, obviously he cheated: Luke used the Force in space, when we all know that's supposed to be restricted to the ground.

Well, to answer the comment about proton effectiveness against shields and armor: these missiles (did he launch two in or just one) did not hit any shield or any armor. The Death Star's shields had been disabled and this one vent access went directly into the reactor core. He could have lobbed a thermal detonator in there and if he was just as lucky with the shot, you'd get the same result...boom!

That's what I would also think to be the answer as to why they had to approach from within the trench; to properly line up an amazingly diffuclt shot with VERY few fighters and evenfewer possibleattempts. I also believe the trench provided cover from the stronger surface turrets.

I don't think anything in this thread was to be taken seriously.

But I do think you're right about why he was flying in the trench of the Death Star.

Just a couple corrections to add:

The Shields weren't disabled. Shields in SW are two types. Either energy shields, which only stop energy weapons. Or the shields that let nothing through, ala the shields used in RotJ. The latter require a *lot* more power to sustain than other types, which is why it had to be placed on Endor, instead of installed on the ship itself. The Rebel fighters just flew inside the shields, and then, once inside the shield "bubble", they're free to fire. They couldn't fire thier cannons at the thermal exhaust port due to it being ray shielded. Leaving them to need to send a physical projectile into it. As you mentioned, tossing a Thermal Detonator in would have worked.
