Thread: TIE Oppressor in PvP

I must say I'm surprised that you lasted as long as you did. The Opp is a good ship as a missile slinging platform. With 3 lots of Image Rec Mk II's you can be a fromidable opponant. For me as they tend to be slow, if you can get behind them they become an easy target and they can't fire missiles if they can't see you. The Advanced X-Wing is pretty Similar in the wayit is in PvP. Deadly if you are in front of it, but if you are behind it, it's an easy target.
I would stick my neck out and say, if there were any rebels in A-Wings, or JSF/GSF's then you would be toast, as they would out manouver you from the begining, unless you have a very good engine.
I used to fear an oppressor in DS as at the time, in my X-Wing i was unable to doge the volley of fire that they produced. Now I've gone smaller, I can dodge, manouver and destroy an oppressor in seconds.
But Kudos on getting 2 kills in your first PvP foray. It can be quite a daunting event.

Last night on Shadowfire we had a Ground PvP event followed by a Space PvP event in DS. We whooped the rebels in space without much effort, and oddly enough it also happened to be my first space pvp endeavor. All the Imperials except for myself and a Freelance Ace were flying fighters, but I had stuck to my Oppressor. As a whole, my Opp. wasn't outfitted very well, and I foolishly was not carrying a missile launcher. But, to my surprise, I was only killed once when the Rebels utterly swarmed us as our numbers dwindled after the first attack, yet I took down two Advanced X-Wings. I didn't have much trouble evading the fighters, as most, except for a few, were too concentrated on saving their own chassis to go after the enemy. I just wanted to list my experience with my TIE Oppressor and prove to those that believe that it is only good for PvE are dead wrong.

Well done!!! I wish I could have been there.
I was at a wedding...a wedding that had a reception with no bar!!! ![]()
The Oppressor is a great PVP ship but it takes a hell of a pilot to make it work right. Oppressor pilots are the hardest working pilots in space IMO. A chimp could fly a JSF, A-wing, or Interceptor and make it look good 9Chimp or not I'm an interceptor pilot til I die
). But the really good pilots are in X-wings and Oppressors. For the big DS events it's all I'll use until the RGI gets fixed. As a light fighter jocky I still have ALOT to learn about piloting Oppressors but in my last major engagment I was able to take out 5 before I got lit up. 3 JSFs 1 B22 and a heavy X. I also took out a YT but that doesn't count ![]()
Load a lvl10 engine in that monster so she can move. If you know what you're doing even the best A-wing or JSF pilot will be hard pressed to get behind you. Or you could put a max speed crafted engine in there and a nice booster and just zip away out of trouble and then swoop back and joust them to death. I'm going to try that next. Some people are able to get 1500-2000 speed with the right engine and booster. No light fighter is going to be able to catch you. And no light fighter is going to want to go nose to nose with an Oppressor when you swing back around.
And do go to Wal Mart and load up on some ordnance. I use 2 IR launchers and 1 proton in mine although I may load 3 IRs.
I'm using 2400 f/b shields and 2 slabs of 1900+ armor. The shields and armor aren't RE'd yet (still holding out for a few Holy Grail parts)
You won't trun on a credit like the speed freaks do but if you really take the time to master the Oppressor you'll earn alot of resepct and make even the craziest JSF pilot a little nervous.
Talk to Gallant and Gehrmann about loading out your Oppressor. Those two guys are artists. There are also some amazing oppressor pilots on Starsider who have made some impressive A-wing killing Oppressors.
One thing that I have a hard time with is remembering my role. I have to get it through my thick skull that I'm not in an Interceptor. Until I get better with the Oppressor I need to keep in mind that I am a support craft and I need to hang back and engage what the light fighters are keeping busy. In the large scale battles I have found that I work best if I get the assist. I'll track a reb that a wingmate is working on, get a lock, and cause some damage. usually a single IR2 isn't enough to get the kill but if you've got IR2 damage along with another fighter spitting hot fire then you're looking at one dead Reb.
1.) Get the salvo out on the first pass. Adjust your shields to the front, corkscrew in, keep the fire button mashed down and wait for the lock. Once the salvo is off, don't get into the mindset of "ok, now i have to get away from him", follow through on the missle shot and turn with him.
or
2.) Just as your about to pass him on the initial engagement (on the 3 9 line), hit your /throttle .40 hotkey and turn hard. A T/O can practically backflip (or powerslide) at that throttle setting. Infact, if you pull too hard on all 3 axis, you acutally run a danger of overshooting your target. Anyway, again, hold down the fire button, paint him, get the missles out, and follow through on the turn.
Breaking away from him before the missles find their target is asking to get vaped. Just my 2 cents on it. Honestly i dont have alot of PvP flight time in a T/O. Only used it for FP grinding or PvE.
Actually the Oppressor andAdv XW isnt that different... Opp oversteers a bit more and have a gun less (an Defense stacked Opp is fearsome indeed, even without missiles)....
That being said... if you flew outnumbered in a lumbering beast like an Opp and still managed to get several kills, either your opponents were very poor or you, my friend, is a excellent pilot ![]()
Personally Ive won a 1v3 engagement against 3 Bel22s in my XWing... That I think were a combination of the 2 above options...
Kudos for sharing your experienses... Might get more people out there in real ships

Missles go with oppressors like peanut butter goes with jelly
Personnaly, I'd criticize someone for not having missles in a T/O
But there is always a choice between using guns or missles. And that choice is deterined by asking oneself, "Is this guy worth using 3 missles on?"

I personally carry missiles in my PvP ships, but only for certain situations. I'll use them when I'm outmanned by ships similar to my own. Royal Guard TIEs get missiled by default. I'm not gonna chase the sucker for 45 minutes trying to land a hit when he's right in front of me. And when we're PvPing in my Nova, missiles are the weapon of choice when dogfighting tiny little fighters.
To me, in most situations, missiles seem like a cheap way out. I know a lot of pilots who agree. But I guess it's a matter of personal opinion. In most cases, I'd just as soon use my guns.
When you're running twin staggerfired L10s, both with effs over .8xx for both weapons on VS AND VA, you only need to hit ONCE, and I can put a bolt through the ass of a Mynock at 350m in a wide angle shot where a cockier pilot than myself thinks he's got the distance on me to get sloppy to line up an attack run.
EDIT: To be fair, ONE of those kills was a head-on shot. An inexperienced ISD popper scoped me hypering in and decided to make a run at me...and didn't corkscrew.
End result - me: armor damage, him: a free trip back to Dant space from a 520m dead-on reticle shot. You do NOT venture into my gunsight whilst attackable and live. I would've felt bad had the person not been a RELIGIOUS Smokey user, even going so far as to call it a "tactic" in later tells. It ticked me off because my Opp was in testbed mode and didn't have a chaff launcher equipped, as the DS visit was merely to gauge how quickly twin L10s could roast a T5 gunship under a continuous barrage (answer: 20-25 seconds). Admittedly, travelling to DS sans chaff is ill-advised, but usually Eclipse has enough Cast Wing flights with the escorts stripped off by loot seekers and FP farmers who didn't want to spend the extra 90 seconds for a gunboat kill.
He then made the mistake of almost successfully spawnkilling a friend of mine whose ship was completely specced and fit out by me. He spent the next hour and a half teaching him that ain't proper.

Oh yeah... Nice to see you got those kills without missiles... Means that theres atleast 2 Opp pilots I know of that can shoot a gun... You and an REALLY annoying pilot on Bloodfin called Nearro... Nearro, if you read this... You didnt kill me at all sunday... I ejected to make you feel betterMessage Edited by NIR_Bria on 08-23-2005 02:12 AM
Aww. That does make me feel better. Though, I now have my Anti-Aya setup going. We'll see how you fare this time. Perfectly staggered 0.25 refire Ions anyone? I've had to turn my sound off to be able to play now. My guns really live up to their "Gatling Cannon" names.
