Thread: Is it just me, or is space mining the most boring thing in SWG?

I've been sitting in front of asteroids blasting away for hours now then tracking the little chunks across black space. This mind-numbing activity is only broken by the occasional lame pirate NPCs that want to throw themselves suicidellyagainst my Krayt's remaining blasters. And for hours of this 'content' I get a few hundred of a resouce? *huge yawn*

Sorry SOE but it's really not that exciting, in fact it's so boring it's painful. And you've convieniently marked all the asteroid locations so that exploration isn't even necessary. Whatmental agelevel IS this game designed for now?

Suggestions to beef things up a bit;

1. GIve us a way of targeting asteroid chunks.

2. Make them more visible against space.

3. If we have to interrupt our activity for space pirates then at least let them drop something of interest...not the same old mostly useless components.

4. How about asteroids that aren't always in the same place?

5. Move the carbonaceous asteroids away from the edge of space...you lose most of what you break off.

6. Increase the amount or ore per unit time. This is a boring activity, the reward for sitting in front of your comp getting rear-rot needs to be increased rather substantially.

7. How about permits to mine? Get a permit and you're protected from pirates and law enforcement scans...but you get less ore. No permits and you're basically 'stealing' the ore and are subject to dangers other than pirates...like law enforcement that scans you for illegally mined ore.

Right now though this activity isn't as much fun as the dentist.

Suggestions to beef things up a bit;

1. GIve us a way of targeting asteroid chunks. Line up in the general direction of the chunk and hit X.

2. Make them more visible against space. They have blue boxes around them, at least on my screen, but I agree, a few shades lighter would help.

Are you using a tractor beam and a higher level laser?

7. How about permits to mine? Get a permit and you're protected from pirates and law enforcement scans...but you get less ore. No permits and you're basically 'stealing' the ore and are subject to dangers other than pirates...like law enforcement that scans you for illegally mined ore. Disagree here. Space is a great big free-for-all, asteroids included. Besides, I have only run into pirates, and a group of tier 4 pirates in a kimo loaded with two mining lasers and a tractor IS fun and challenging.

Right now though this activity isn't as much fun as the dentist.

Seriously, use a tractor beam, I was able to fill my hold twice in about 35 minutes (1000 capacity) using two mining lasers and a tractor beam. Also, as you are master, if you only arm your mining ship with mining weapons, you lower your capabilities and make the encounter more challenging when you get jumped by pirates. A second option is to go overt with the same loadout. Occasionally, when I have had no target selected, the chunk will become my target once I hit it with the tractor. But I have to agree, maybe make the chunks a different color on the radar, or have a different color box around them would help immensely. Also, if the large chunk breaks into more than five smaller chunks, it's hard to get them all. The last one always seems to disappear as I get within tractor range.

LOL, the dentist is only fun with the nitrous turned up high. Hmm...there's an idea for space mining, a portable nitrous tank. Or, I suppose, a bottle of vodka would work.

Would be nice to be able to tab to the next chunk so you don't have to try and find them.

I'll upgrade my lasers and see if that makes things go a bit better. Still, it reminds me of the time way back when when you could only sample for resources on the ground...back in beta before harvesters. Sampling for enough resources to do anything with was...well...boring.

I like it so far, the pirate attacks break up the monotany of it. I just discovered that the tractor works a lot better than the laser so its even better. And in the jedi fighter, at low speeds i can still turn as fast as the asteroids move, so i can suck those little guys up as fast as they explode.

Heres a tip that works for me, get close and turn on the tractor as you fire at the big chunk and when it explodes, you can actually suck up like 2 or 3 of the rocks at once! makes it even faster.

Just as good as Tabbing between asteroid chunks, check out the macro for space mining explained in this thread.

Very simple, actually, it's the same one that AFK-Meatlump-looters have used since forever -

I like /target ast
works great save for when there's the pirates around (they for some reason pick up before the chunks do...)

I use next target under reticle. Size of reticle (area from which to pick targets from)is determined by Targeting reticle size slider under options er ... ui I think. However it's slightly bugged as it resets upon log on even though the slider is minimized.

Couldn't agree more, it is butt numbingly dull

Some sort of space harvestors would do the job.

I wonder if any of these dev peeps has ever played a decent space game anyway?

Perhaps space mining isn't for you, then? I'm having loads of fun with it, despite only having done the quest up to the point where I have my large cargo hold and my Class I laster. It's still fun for me. But it isn't for everyone. If you're not enjoying it, why do it?

Im the same im having a lot of fun mining ive just managed to get my Y-8 mining ship set up and it is the coolest looking ship pob ship like ever.

The only problem i have is finding a crew to go up in my mining ship because to actualy do any mining it really needs a pilot and both turrets maned though having engineers, a doc and someone in the operations chair would be cool also.
