Say what you want about the Bel-22, I love mine, just as I loved my Dunie before it. (besides, at 36k on a vendor it's my new disposable hero) Packed with my newly RE'd level 6 engine, a big honkin' centerline gun (3k+ dmg) and a decent 2nd gun (2.2k) it's a nice little ship to crank out my Tier 4 pilot missions.
(My Vaksai is in storage both awaiting good RE'd parts and until I get master so I can enter deep space for repairs.)
Maneuverability is fun but there's something to be said about boosting straight at a group of 4-6 tier 4/5 ships in a tank and blasting 'em all to smithereens. Before I advanced past it in pilot and turned it into a mining ship, my Kimogila was my tank of choice. God, I love that thing. Painted black it looks menacing. I even named it the Ithorian Avenger.
So, anyway, after completing my mission for my 3rd tier 4 piloting box I took a look at the reward. Nice level 8 shield but 40k+ mass? Ummm...what can I possibly use that in? It'd be a stretch in the Kimo and possibly even the Vaksai but a Rihxyrkwould have plenty of room. Turns out yeah, it did.
Loaded up with some of the best parts in my inventory (which, admittedly, isn't that large yet) I only got 'er up to 152k. So after some shopping in went a bigger reactor (16k), better engines and I crafted a better capacitor and some heavier armor (tier 3 shipwright...go me LOL). STILL only around 187k and I know once I get some more RE'd parts in there I'll have even more room. I feel like a homeless man moving into an empty mansion.
I knew what to expect handling-wise after flying my Kimo. Rolls are NOT high-mass ships' strong point as you have to start to counter-correct before the roll is completed and even then it's a tad sloppy. However, these things RULE at sliding. You want to fly circles and loops around me while flying your light fighter? Fine. I'll just set my throttle at 45% and use yaw and a little pitch to slide and keep my nose on you practically the entire time and blast you to bits. You want to joust? Oh, baby - big mistake. I've got the shields to take your potshots and 3 BFGs ready and willing to plow one through your snotlocker before you can get past me. If you actually DO get past me I can take 5 or more shots from your buddies on my tail while I finish you off before having to CtSS, turn and engage again. With my big honkin' capacitor andCO3 I'm back to full capacitor energy before I even complete my turn. You want to run? Ha! I've got a hefty booster and consussion II launcher (can craft better now but haven't taken the time).
I know I'd get slaughtered in PvP in this thing but as I can't even enter deep space atm I don't care. That's what my Vaksai will be for.
I am wondering, though, if a crafted engine with all experimentation points put into yaw (maybe a couple onto pitch) would be even more benificial for a heavy ship like this one for sliding? For PvE I'm thinking it could make for an interesting experiment. Once I get tier 4 SW under my belt I might just try it.
I still fly my Bel-22 when I feel the need to turn 'n burn but more often than not lately, I feel like flying my aerial battlewagon. I can take it, I don't have to turn or give ground. You SHALL NOT pass.
My name is Scott, and I love my tank.

I wouldn't knock the shield, it's about the best starfighter shield in the game. Find yourself another level 8 shield under 27k mass (I have a 25k, I've heard of 24...) and another with 15+ recharge and fill in the rest and RE them. Save that reward Borstel Disruptor too, it's got some of the best stats for a level 8 gun in the game. And if you like the Rix, you'll love the krayt.
If you're not doing pvp, I'd get the fastest engine you can load in it...maybe experiment speed all the way then add to yaw or something. You can load in the 3 biggest guns you can fit and make slingshot passes at gunboats running engine overload and booster out of their range before they can get a shot through your shields. It won't handle as well, but your speed willsave you most of the time, Youjust have to practice accuracy for the brief time things are in front of your guns. I use the same philosophy with POB ships, andwhile it does little to improve their already bad steering I've been able to outrun attacking jsfs in a YT. People have askedwhy I sometimes makeengines with such low PYR rates in trade for top speed; at first it was because people asked me to, then it was because I tried one and liked how fast I could go with it. As you said, you won't be doing a whole lot to improve your ship's handling, but if you make it fast enough to get a pass in with guns blazing and get you out to safefty faster, you'll take out more enemies than you might if a gunboat or 2 had time to beat through your rear shields before you got out of range.
That's just my opinion, but it's how I set up most of my privateer heavy fighters. Sounds like you're having fun with it. You'll figure out your own style.

This is where the drawback of heavy ships comes in. Rather than in handling or speed or such, the main drawback of heavy fighter-bombers is in the range of components we have to work with. That reward Shield you picked up can be RE'd down to less than 30k mass, making it the single best Shield available. An RE'd L8 reward Shield will fit into most ships (many avid A-Wing pilots have shoehorned them in), so the effect is that the vast majority of Player ships will be toting one of them, regardless of mass.
Take that, combine it with the diminishing returns of effectiveness per mass on most other components above Level 6, and you end up with a situation where the role of a "bomber" gets filled by ships that should be entirely too small to fill such a role.
I'm happy that you like your Rihkxyrk, it's a great ship (and I got a lot of stick-time in it myself). It is a great PvE ship, though you will probably dump it for the Krayt and never look back (Krayt has more mass and better handling... silly Devs).

the next line in his post went on to say it would suck in PvP so that was intended as a PvE anology and I prefer the rihk over the krayt myself for the better sliding just need to get dead zone inertia settings right

I gotta say I like the challenge of the Rhyk more than the Krayt. The krayt as Shona said is more mass and better handling. But as she also stated the mass/return ratio diminishes greatly beyond level 6 components, which is very true. The only real advantage then that the krayt gives is a 4th gun which requires a gunner. Subtract that and you have 30k extra mass basically for weaponry upgrades, but with WO3, 3 lvl 8s in a Rhyk are basically like 3 lvl 10s in a Krayt, since with the krayt's fire spread it is tough to hit anything but gunboats with all 3 weapons, whereas the Rhyk hits with all 3 very nicely

I prefer the Rhyk myself to the Krayt. I like to be able to hit with all 3 guns. The wing guns on the krayt are just too far apart for my liking.

I kinda prefer the Ryk to the krayt as well, but there's one thing the Krayt truly excels at: space mining. You can put your tractor in the turret and toggle it on, load your class 3 mining laser in the wing mount, and still load up borstels in BOTHthe two centerline mounts for taking down asteroid bandits. Stack in a fast engine and beefy shield, and you can fill a 1000 unit cargo box every 15 minutes in ANY space zone with minimal risk. It's no Y-8, but you don't need a crew, and heck, you can't get a Y-8 right now anyway
