Thread: Y-8, why does everyone complain so much? bugs aside of course

I ALWAYS use my Y-8 to mine, i dont find it all that cumbersome. Everyone complains about it being to big to be able to hit asteroid chunks. Yeah the top turret wont mine properly, but i just use the pilot controlled weapon. When im mining, i slow down so turning works just as well as a fighter, i was actually killing t2's with a class II mining laser fairly effectivley. In my opinion, i like the y-8, i also like the massive storage space it has, 30k compared to a measly 1.5k for a fighter, thats worth it. I got used to how it shoots, you have to keepin mind the mining laser is on your side rather than the nose of the bridge like a y-wing. If a chunk is close to you and you are aiming at it with the middle of the reticle then it wont hit, line it up so the gun is on the chunk, then fire. Come on everyone, stop complaining and try it out for more than 5 minutes!

I think it's just a matter of getting used to it, and how you wish to use it. We did have that brief discussion about the Y-8 yesterday when we were both mining the same asteroid. Truth is, I use my Y-8 for crewed mining. It's a bit tricky, but my technique is improving.
Current setup for crewed mining:
pilot controls the tractor beam
top turret is the mining laser.
I fly in chase cam view so I can see chunks break off.
The only things that bug me are the way the tractor behaves in the top turret, and that its animation isn't consistent.

i always just mine solo in it, when i tried to use the mining laser in the top turret, it just hit the asteroid and didnt flash like it would if it were working, it just looked how it would look if any other normal weapon hit it. But i was alone and didnt have anyone in the pilot seat. I dont really have the time or the attention span to get together a crew, even if its one other person, im just lazy and impatient. Is there a bug that the top turret wont work unless the pilot seat is occupied? I thought i heard that somewhere.

I think the main reason people are annoyed with the Y-8 is that Mining Ships shouldn't have to move around to mine. They should litterally be able to sit in one spot and mine those asteroids.

Haven't tried mining with it yet, but I have one question: Where's the loot box in it? I can't seem to find it anywhere...

I would guess loot appears in your inventory, but there probably isnt a loot box in the Y-8 because it wasnt meant for fighting, just stick to the regular POB ships or fighters. Y-8 wasnt meant for fighting with its lousy firing arcs.

We complain because a properly equipped Krayt or X/B-wing will easily out-perform your Y-8 in a mining role, even counting trips to unload the cargo bay.

Forget B wings or krayts. I mine in an A wing, u can't beat it for chasing chunks of rock.

True, but the A-Wing only have one gun the others can have Mininglaser and Tractorbeam plus standart weapon to kill annoying Asteroid pirates fast.
I use my Rixy for mining and usually haul in 1550 in about 10-15 minutes depending on how many attacks I get.
Hyper to either Corellias Own or Kashyyyk Neutral territory because the station is so close, and ofloading resources are done fast.

Forget B-wings, A-Wings, Krayts..blah blah blah...JUST FORGET MINING!!!! I have never known anything so dull, boring, unrewarding, hard work, dull, boring, unrewarding..oh, did I mention HARD WORK!!!!

All the people I heard complaining about the Y8 are people who have tried mining in it alone.
I mean for pitys sake..its a ship which is supposed to have a crew performing different functions so of course its going to suck horribly if you attempt to solo mine in it.
I've been aboard a few Y8s now with crews and as long as each crew member knows what their function is aboard the ship etc, the Y8 imo is amazing. I havn't yet unpacked my deed because I got my 6 slots full already [even though I only really use two ships

Because no matter how many people get together to do mining, the total yield of resources will be greater if they all use SP ships instead of all piling into the Y-8.
Everyone expected the Y-8 to be the primary mining workhorse. Instead, everyone is using it for anything but mining. Mine has become my own space going Store'N'Lock (fancy name for junkyard).

I always mine alone in the Y-8 and it works perfectly fine for me. Just get used to how it handles at lower speeds and its fine. But im clueless as to what crew members would do on a mining ship though. I guess there would be someone bored at the operations station when your under attack, sheild shunt, sheild shunt, sheild shunt... But i dont like to drag people into mining, really boring and im greedy and like to keep all the cash to myself
but i pay people who gaurd my ship while im mining in the new speeders because everybody wants them.
I guess im just stupid for not using a crew, but i still find it ok by myself. So... thats about all i have to say
