Thread: B-Wing: First Impressions

The Corvette exploded in a fury of sparks and carnage on a grand scale. Our group had fought well, and brought down the enemy ship in what I considered a very short time. It took a moment to realize I had finally achieved what I had been seeking for a week after making 4/4/4/4.

Mastered at last!

So, what's a new master Alliancepilot to do? Well, trying on the helmet was out of the question, no such perks for Wooks. So, with a million credits burning a hole in my pocket, I headed out to my local shipwright's vendor and cast my eys on the prize I had been working towards- a shiny new B-Wing. I grab the deed, and scream back to Coronet to get the chassis built. 100k later, and the ship is on my D-pad, ready for load out.

Something I should mention at this point, for those that have piloted Y-wings, and X-wings exclusively- you will need a flight computer, and of course, the commands you want to use. In my case, engine overload 4, reactor overload 3, and weapon tuning 4, along with moderate shield commands (tier 2) were loaded into place. 249k mass!!!! "Wow, I'll never run out of room with that much to work with", I thought naively. As it turnsout, 4 hard points are both a blessing, and a curse. After shifting things around a bit, I settled on a configuration Ifelt I could live with for a test flight into Dathomirian space.

With droid commands in place, foils closed, the B-wing topped out at 1097 full throttle. At this speed, it also handles like acast iron bathtub on a skateboard. Weapon loadout? 1 experimental blaster max 3.6k damage, 3 advanced blasters at 2.6k max each. With the engine cut to 65% throttle, things improved dramatically in the handling department, but there is the same tendancy towards over steer that you find in the Y-wing.

So, how'd she do? Beautifully I am delighted to say. Despite some threads on this forum, this is apure killing machine. Mark IV missle launchers with extreme projectile weaponbackup, allow you to dish out a tremendous pounding. The compliants about the B-Wing's lack of finesse do have some truth to them, but like any high performance craft, the B-wing demands tight control on the part of the pilot. Learning when to stop a turn, and anticipating what your next move will need to be before the need to execute that actionare critical, as adjustments on the fly are extremely difficult to perform successfully. This is probably not the craft to take out for a solo journey into populated zones in space while declaredovert. Nearly any fast fighter will tear you to ribbons in short order if your adversary knows even the basics of air (space)combat. There is, however, nothing I would rather pilot against a larger enemy craft in the environment.

Some have asked "what do I do after I master pilot?" For my fellow Alliance pilots, I would suggest that nothing could be more pleasurable, than seeking to master the B-Wing. There is no fancy title, nor new flight wear to be had in this quest. Just purefun.

I love the B-Wing. It's my favorite ship and always has been.
I don't yet have one on the live server, but when JtL was in BETA, I had a B-Wing and had a blast in it. Can't wait until I have on in live. ^^

I'd love to hear more. Frankly i bought a nova courier instead, although i think the B wing might be a good replacement for the longprobe in the heavy tank/bomber department.

This was good to hear, but what about that Nova thing-a-ma-jiggy? (multi person reb craft) Have you had any luck with one of those?

Very few people have had luck with MP ships.....its like an art form....with guns.......and missiles............and an intent to destroy....... (what do you know, just like most Renassance Era minus the technology....)

I been 4,4,4,4 for a weeek and a half now. Had my B-wing in my inventory as soon as i hit 4,4,4,4 its calling me. My most used ship is th e Long Probe currently. So i feel i should be able to drop into the B-wing with only a slightly different learning curve.

I love the B-wing.

If you exercise the draw-figters away strategy on the kessel corvette, B-wing'shave a ball tanking out the gunboats and the corvette itself.

I was doing a mission where we had a couple of them, and they took the gunboats down in lietraly seconds. I have finaly got my own b-wing yesterday, and althou i dont realy have good enough guns to put on it yet the damage and the potential is enormous.

Its great at what its supposed to do. Get a armored, shileded target, approach at attack spead, unload everything you got of missiles, blasters and what not, and escape to do a 180 for another run.

And as long as no fighteris continuesly pouning its 6´ everything is nice and safe..

Thanks for the kind words.

I hope to provide more information on the B-Wing as I acquire more experience using this craft. If there is an interest expressed in the topic, I will be happy to share my experiences with various weapon and defensiveloadouts, both in the B-wing's primary role of attack craft, and in it's potential, such as it is, as a dogfighter. I think there are some very interesting options open inchoosing mission specific configurations given the tremendous mass available for use on this bird. Exploring the ins and outs of specific reasons behind component selection and the process of component elimination for given rolesin group discussion is something I'd really like to take part in.

I've always been a fan of heavier aircraft in historically based flight sims, prefering the durability of aircraft like the P-47over the all out speed and manueverabilityof something like a Mustang, Dora 9, Zero, or Spitfire variants. That being the case, I felt right at home in the B-Wing. For the time being though, I wouldn't feel comfortablewriting on the topic beyond a simple first impression.

I hope others will be able to add to this thread with their own first impressions, or be in a position to make comparisons with the other master only rebel craft, the Nova Courier.

Take a b-wing on a bomber run at a corvette or even a gun boat and tell me how great they are, when each and ever shot hits you. It is too slow to be a good bomber givein its shields and armor, and it can not defend its self against incoming fighters well at all.. All that fire power is useless if it is nearly imposible to bring it to bare. The tie bomber is a vastly superior craft.
