Analysis: Y-8 Mining Ship: Tips, Issues and Configs

This thread will break down the mining vessel and examine the effectiveness of the ship within current parameters of space mining. I have went out and tested this ship, compiled a list of bugs, and I also have a few suggestions on how the ship can be better utilized as a mining vessel. I will also go into tips and configurations you can do with this ship, as well point out a few more references for further information.

___________

Introduction

___________

The Y-8 is the newest POB (Person-On-Board) ship for the Star Wars Galaxies universe. Designed by Corellian Space Mining Corp, this ship was intentially designed for just space mining. The y-8 was developed by the devs as a multiplayer mining ship. Now with Publish 24 out, mining in this ship can be both fun and profitable. You will find that this ship has its downsides, and it has its afvantages over mining in starfighters.

The Y-8 was made with 5 slots for weapons. Here are the weapons slots and their corollating guns:

  • Weapon 0 is the Bridge-Top gun
  • Weapon 1 is the rear turret (Slang- Butt Gun, Back Turret, Tail Turret)
  • Weapon 2 is the Pilots laser
  • Weapon 3 is the front left gun (Slang- Chest Gun 1)
  • Weapon 4 is the front right gun (Slang- Chest Gun 2)

  • You may fit any components you wish to into your Y-8, however I wholeheartedly recommend you spend the investment on Elite POB Parts, it will pay off in the long run and save a few headaches later. You will find upon hopping on board that the Y-8 has no loot box for looted components during combat. This is because development's intention for this ship was to make it into a multi-player mining ship, not a combat gunboat. If you want to fit it as so, I have no problems with it, your ship

For the best possible loadout, I would recommend this config:

Reactor- Regeneration Rate around 40k Reasoning- For all of the new POB Parts you will be installing

Armor- two 6-8k protection panels Reasoning- Good to have backup armor incase something does go awe with shields or the Droid Interface shutsdown for who knows why.

Engine- 130 Top speed engine 50 Top Speed engine Reasoning- Either is fine, if you have problems running through asteroids while following them, try a 50 speed engine for better cornering, maneuverability and best of all its fool proof for jumping past your marks.

Shield- 9-10k protection Reasoning- HUGE, HUGE importance. With 9k shields, Tier 3 bandits will barely scratch the paint. Mining in Kessel can be done no probs if you have a good crew.

Capper- 2.7k-3.3k charge Reasoning- Gonna have a lot of lasers firing and youll need an optimum capacitator. Also good for extra shield power.

Booster- Dont care what you do here fit a nice lvl 10 in =p

Droid Interface- the lower the droid speed, the better. Droid Commands? Overload 3, Engline OL 4, Capper Overload 3 and Reactor OL 3 or 4 will be your friends.

Cargo Hold- 35k-45k hold is optimal.

Weapons: Weapon 0- Good for a Mining Laser to catch chunks that Chest Guns do not hit, good for defense.\ Weapon 1- Tail turret, 110% useless for mining unless you want to shoot a tractor beam backwards to catch mising chunks. Fit a nice lvl 10 gun in here. Weapon 2- Elite Mining Laser, Pilot Gun. Weapon 3- Left chest turret, either fit a Mk 3 laser, Elite laser or Tractor beam in here to suit your needs. Weapon 4- Right chest turret, either fit a Mk 3 laser, Elite laser or Tractor beam in here to suit your needs. Ordnance- Whatever you want in here, same for countermeasures. FC- The y-8 takes a flight computer, I recommend a v.6 with the commands i mentioned earlier, including emergency shielding and cap to shield shunts.

    TheCTS Technique (Revised)

Works much better with Publish 24 fixes. The pilot will shoot chunks off the asteroid only: while the Chest gunners will go to work. Have a macro ready to automatically follow the asteroid, target it, and have your men fire when you are directlybehind it (your "men" are in the chest turrets). Rinse, repeat until your full. Not necessary for mining operations, but the top bridge gun and tail gun can be used for defense, tractor beams, what floats your bubble.

    The Standing Man Technique

This is easier on the pilot and lower gunner. The pilot will position himself in range of the asteroid and begin to blow chunks off the rock. Steadying the ship still, the rocks should hopefully come by the ship. The top gunner will shoot any asteroids that fly by at odd angles. Chest gunners will blow away as many small chunks as they can. For optimal time, place the ship 600-620 meters away from the asteroid. Best done in groups of y-8s forming a star or cross around the Surface Area of the asteroid, 600 meters away. Eventually everyone will fill up.

Current Bugs and Issues with the Y-8:

Quest to get the ship is still bugged. -Fixed Publish 24

Items cannot be moved up or down. -Fixed Publish 24

Tractor beam “sticks” in the upper turret, and will no longer work. -Fixed Publish 24

Tractor Beam will not work in the pilot’s slot (will not pull in rocks and is a poor placement technique anyways)- Bugged but a bad lcoation for it anyways

Windows are black, including in all other POB ships. - Bugged

There is no loot box on the y-8. -Intended in the design of the ship

Tractor Beam and Mining Lasers in first person view are blinding my gunners, literally.

Please add any additional comments below; I will have pictures up soon to further explain what I am talking about. I would prefer if this thread be viewed by developers. Thanks! See you in the stars, crunching that inorganic material =)

I have taken my Y-8 out on several missions now

...same mining problems - took about an hour to get 1000 units of petro asteroid actually...

Here's where I have fun with the Y-8 though - put a very fast engine in it - call up a few fighter escorts - maybe a YT - get a full crew and outfit it for battle.... it's a space tank and great for helping newer pilots get xp.... I've engaged multiple Tier IV's in it with little or no damage - have yet to try it on the Corvette but I have a mission lined up soon....curious to see how it'd fare.... if I fly very carefully I could see it coming off quite beautifully....

As for mining...the M22 worked much better...

Well in the mining dept. ive filled a 1550 hold in 5-10 mins in a rihkyxrk.

Trick is to be ~50m behind the chuck as it breaks into smaller bits, if youre lucky you can suck it all onboard before they break off.

Ive grabbed 10% of the hold in 1-2 seconds when i tractor beamed in what much have been 6-8 chunks before i could even see them.

I'll have to try this method.

Referring to Figure 1, I believe it is best that the guns be placed here. They should have an arc to where they can get some chunks from the front of the ship, but for maximum effectiveness also on the side of the ship. In Figure 2, idealy we want the turrets to either have side angles to shoot rocks with, and abstractly anything in front of the arc here, which I will show in Fig 3.

Or with Fig 3 we can try something with this, really I think this would be a better design change, but give 180 degree rotation on the X and Y axis.

And I am verry sorry to be picky, but I am really looking for posts with suggestions to my ideas or added ideas of your own, not "I gotta try this!!!" I would really like to hear Tomo's word on this.

The Y-8 is perfect for the purpose of mineing and is every bit as efficient as any fighter. Allow me to enlighten you.

How to equip and use a Y-8 space mineing ship quickly and efficently.

    Pre requisits:

    • 2 accounts 2 computers (someone has to be in the top turret at all times, I can't imagine an actual player wanting to do this)

    Equip your Y-8 like this:

    • Top turret is the tractor beem
    • fixed forward gun is your Y-8 elite mineing laser
    • rear mounted wapon you can do with as you please, its mostly useless
    • droid progrms: Reactor OL4, Cap OL4, Engine OL 3, Weapon OL 3, Shield shunt 4
    • Cargo hold, bigger is better

    When you launch:

    • 2nd account get in 1 of the 2 opperations chair and run the 4 overloads.
    • after over loads are complete move the 2nd account to the upper turret
    • Toggle the Tractor beem on with the 2nd account (doing it from the pilot seat will only turn on an imaginary tractor beem that does nothing)
    • While looking in first person view pilots chair adjust the tractor beem so that half of the beem runs down the middle-left strutt in the forward window. This approxamatly intersects your reticle's cross hair at 50m-150m from target rock.
    • Once the beem is aimed the pilot needs to zoom out to external view. You cant see jack from the interior view.
    • use the laser on the big rock to break of a chunk
    • Target the chunk and match its speed.
    • Optimal distance to target is 50m-150m. if it's farther than 180m, just turn around and break off another chunk. dont bother chaceing anything.
    • Aim the beem at the center of rotation, Put the white flashlight on the green lead indicator.
    • Tap the chunk with the laser and SLURP 90-100% of the chunk instanly pops in your hold. Most of the time I do not bother picking up the small potatos the splatter around. but if you must you will be at the same speed as the little rocks for EZ pickup with the beem.

If I were to do this in a fighter, I would use auto follow instead of matching target speed. A fighter is better able to adjust speed than the Y-8 and autofollow puts you in the most optomal distance and aimed at the center of rotation.

Since you don't need two accounts to mine in a fighter then the Y-8 is hardly "every bit as efficient"...
