They've been called a lot of things, but what makes the most sense and comes straight from background info released at the time of the first trilogy (referring to the TIE's ofcourse)is that they are radiators to get rid of excess heat.

Yes, the Episode III cross-section book clearly labels them as radiators, exteneded during combat to bleed of the excess heat of overworked laser and shield systems.

And I still use my Jedi starfighter all the time. It is my primary fighter, and a major mass upgrade from TIE Advanced with about the same perfomance. I am an Imperial pilot and don't feel out of place using it as it still has the traditional TIE hexagonal visual cues. Though I am trying to get my hands on a Heavy TIE and may consider switching to that if I can get an RE'd level 10 laser together.

The TIE did not evolve from the JSF line of ships. The TIE fighters were designed and created by Sienar Fleet Systems. Sienar Fleet Systems began developing the designs for the twin ion engine ships pre Clone War. The Jedi Starfighter you see in Episode II and the Jedi Interceptor (ETA-2 Actis) were developed and created by Kuat Systems Engineering, the same company that makes the Firesprays. The ETA-2Actis was made during the Clone Wars.

I didn't read that anywhare. Far as I know Lucas wanted them to look like forrunners to the TIEs so I don't care what EU says.

You would still need to do the mission to fly it

Unless of course you're looking for a backup.

Well.. you can't even use it unless you did the mission for it.. which would mean you have one.. which would mean you don't need mine! LMAO!!!!

(Actually, I'm a loot collector. Have been since day 1. I currently have every ship possible for both imperial and nuetral pilot, a large house with over 320 re'ed parts, 1 PA Hall full completely with rare, extinct, or difficult to find loot (397 items in it) and another PA hall with about 200 items in it..... too much sh**!)

Meh, If someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse.. I'd think about selling it. Though like I said.. can't use it unless you did the mission which gives it to you free! LOL!

Yaban is right in that the two fighters are made by two different companies and are therefore probably not to similiar mechanically. But at the same time Rath Sienar stole the most signifigant visual cues from the fighter for the TIE design including the cockpit, hexagonal wings, and of course the Twin Ion Engines.

Once upon a time...there was a beautiful princess..I erm mean starfighter pilot..and he wasn't beautiful...he was mildly pretty. He didn't like the new Ep III ships even though he owned one so...

My Grievous took a one way trip to the Intergalactic Starship Compacting plant.

On arrival, the resident Gaffer told me that the Greivous..like the JSF was already too small to be put through a crushing machine so we had to resort to desperate measures.

On a dangerous mission to the maw where a lot of Repulsor lift engines /devices are made we strapped it into a bulk freighter which was set on a course to the nearest Blackhole....the only crushing force in the universe great enough to make the Grievous starfighter or JSF any smaller than they already are.

The fighter got annihalated in the void...

There was much Monty Python like rejoicing and the mildly pretty Starfighter pilot lived happily ever after in his beloved Advanced X-wing.
