Bump for a pesky bug (or performance issue, if you prefer) that has evaded fixing and has yet to be acknowledged. Still there this weekend for me.

I have seen this same issue.

Fow me it tends to be associated with ISP packet lag and crossing space server boundries when my position does not seem to match with the SOE servers. I will see it happen very frequently for a little while then disapears.

I might try to post a ping test to see if you are getting much packet loss. But only so much time this week

I was hoping that the patch in Publish 12.1 would fix it, but it's still happening.

  • Fixed engine slow-down in first-person camera mode.

That sounds about right. I have the same problem every once and a while, drops to 0 and then back to full. I think everyone just needs to pop open the bandwidth window and just take a look. The packet loss probably pops up for a second and then back down, because not only will your ship hit 0, but the other ships around you will change positions. This has happened to me before during a vette run and everything just shifts.

this is indeed a strange problem, it does not happen when i am in a fighter but when i fly my yt-1300 it happens every time i use the booster. if say i am going at full speed and hit the booster after i let go my speed drops to zero. this never happens any other time or in any other ship, so am a bit clueless as to the cause.

Exact same thing here. Never in a fighter, only in the YT. only it doesent happen as soon as I let off the booster, it happens as soon as the ship hits normal speed after decelerating from boost and it happens every single time. Then the ship slowly builds its speed back up after the sudden stop. Very annoying.

      Hey guys,

Is anyone else having this issue? Maybe its suppose to do this, but I find it terribly ANNOYING. If I am cruising at top speed in space the ship will occasionally drop down to ZERO and then quickly jump back up to full speed. This is very annoying when im in battle because I will have my recticle on my target, the engine will drop to 0 and then I will lose my target in huge way.. and have to realign again.

This happens all the time, and on all the ships I own. Anyone else have this problem? Or is it a "Feature" ???

      Thanks doods!

Unlike everybody else probably. I think this problem resets somewhere in the boosters operations! Heres why:

I was in my A-wing attacking to many things at one time. THey took out most of my engines (normaly 859, at this time max speed was 80), but i still had full boosters so i would hit my boosters to excape (max speed in the 300s then), well when the boosters would finally wear out and my speed would start dropping back down to 80 max. When 80% of the booster had fallen away (moving down ALOT slower then it normaly would), and there was only 20% booster left, it would "hiccup" and my speed would pop from 0 to 80, instaed of continuing to degrage from its highest speed... That all I got on this one. Bye!

Judging by a general survey, it's easy to see that the problem is widespread. System speed, connectivity, location, and server choice all see to be moot points (I've tried it on eight servers so far, and it happens there as well. I have a 5 Mb connection and a machine sporting an AMD 64 3400+, and Nvidia 6800 GT, 1 gig Corsair XMS, and Raptor 10k RPM SATA Drive. I've tried it with a mouse and keyboard as well as with a joystick.). Having said this, then what is the cause?

This could be anyone's guess, but considering how long the bug has been running, I'm going to make the assumption that it is server dynamics or game structure. Server dynamics mean that data from different zones are stored on different parts of the server, and you're hitting a switch. This is possible, but it's impossible to locate a "seam", where the bug occurs every time. This could mean that they overlap, like a Venn or Euler diagram, but I don't know that for sure. The second possibility is game dynamics. Have you ever noticed that space loads considerably faster than ground locations? Perhaps when you space, you only load yor zone, as opposed to all the surrounding zone/ You have them in low detail on your RAM, but their primary textures, sounds, etc are still on your HDD. Even with a 10k RPM HDD, the harddrive spinup time would be noticeable. This wouldn't be a hardware dependancy, but a software one. Both of these problems, as aforementioned, aren't easily fixed, if they could be fixed at all.

Oh, and aty, as for you not seeing it, I can propose a few solutions:

      1. You have enough RAM to load a much larger zone than most people (a gig and a half or more).

      2. You're video card has an exceptional amount of memory (larger than 256)

      3. You have your settings so low that you load a much larger portion of space

      4. You have a sound card with its own RAM

      5. You have a HDD faster than 10k RPM

      6. You have 3d audio/software audio off, and are using hardware

      7. You have a direct RAM->CPU bridge on your Proc

      8. You're just being belligerent

      And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, ohhh yeahhh

I didn't read this all, so sorry if I am repeating, but I will say, it is not server boundaries. It is not the ship, or auto-pilot, or anything else directly related to the game. It has to be server/client, lag, or connection issues. Reason being, this has never once happened to me, however, whenever I am grouped and following someone in space, it has happened every time except one to the person I was following.

It's not packet loss/lag, at least not in my case Mons. This is tied in with the bug I posted in the bug thread. Everytime I've troubleshooted/played around with trying to resolve this or isolate the problem I've had the CTRL-Shift-G window up and monitoring it. I get no lag spikes nor no packet loss at all when this occurs. My ping rates stay pretty steady all the while. I've run ping tests on my connection for extended periods with 0 packets lost at all. I still insist it's some sort of problem in the synchronization coding, perhaps that only causes a conflict with certain pieces of hardware, I dunno, but somehow someway it's a problem in the JTL synch coding between the game client and the server.

I used to have this problem ALL the time.

Recently I switched from a Microsoft Force FeedBack 2 to a Saitek joystick with a sep. throttle (which technically isn't even officially supported by the game) and this problem has completely disappeared for me.

I have been on this joystick for 2.5 weeks now; I fly 5-6x a week. It hasn't happened once since. Fluke? Randomness?

Honestly, I dunno, I just know the speed is not changing anymore for me on it's own.

      For what it's worth...

Hmm that is interesting. I'd just assumed this was rubberbanding like on the ground, but it seems to happen so seldom and has never happened in a period of high activity mabye it is my joystick (which I don't use for this game). Will have to unplug it and find out...
