btw... I do not have this client server problem you speak of. 1gig ram, radeon 9700. dsl.

I dont think what you are moaning about is happening to ALL of us, therefore, I dont think it's a code problem. More of hardware. Yes I'm a software architect too.

Bottom line, I disagree with your "killer shot" theory, and all that other stuff you spend a long time writing. I've palyed all the games you mention, ALWAYS at the most difficult setting from the first day, so I know my sims also, (like I'm sure the devs know theirs) , and from what I've seen, the flight model in this game is awesome, th game design is excellent. No complaints. None.

I have also experienced this bug now. Probably had in the past too, but didn't notice it quite like i did today.

I saw the bolts hit the shield, even heard the sound. Enemy shields still at 100%. This was a tier 1 ship.I proceeded to hit it several more times, but shields were still at 100 %. Then i get a sync with the server (Ship jerks, and speed drops to 0 then back up to full), hit him 1 time after that, and the shields drop to 18%. I use lvl 5 weapons.

I noticed that the whole time i was in space, i had a packetloss of 5%. Constantly. Ping of ~100ms.

I flew some more, and tried to fight some higher level ships, but the enemy ships were dancing all over the place, executing impossible moves, I get no hits in, then a server/client resync, enemy flies straight for a little while and i mange to land a few bolts beforeweareback to the dancing part again.

I noticed one thing that supports the theory of this beign a client/server related problem, when i couldnt hit the enemy with a projectile weapon (laser, disruptor, ion), i could do damage with a missile. I think this is so because the missile is guided, so the server (or client) calculates where it will hit, and it is in the programming the the missilie will either hit a countermeassure or the target. If the server has not registered a countermeassure being deployed, it will assume that the missile found its target. No matter how far apart the client/server sync is.

Oh, and devs....

Fix this. Please. It takes all the fun out of being in space.

in this game you need to rely on you ears more than your eyes. Listen to the force and you will find the target

Peace.

I agree you cannot fix this problem using the current codebase that relies on as little latency as possible, because as you said, latency cannot be eliminated, that is true.

I disagree that it cannot and should not be fixed. Think outside the box. By having a different conversation between client and server where they both trust each other, instead of the one-way street we have now, it can be fixed. Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to take a step back and change your approach, not patch the current approach. besides, if they fix it, you won't be affected, your shots will keep landing just the same, so why be against a better game?

Mark my words: When PvP becomes a big thing in JTL sometime in the coming weeks, you'll hear a lot of whining over this bug. Getting some registered shots that don't land actual damage against an anonymous mob is one thing, but losing a PvP duel or battle in a world where most PvPers have egos too big to fit the Kessel Sector, all because your skilled shots did not do damage and the other's did? Hehe, I predict a lot of flames and frustration.

I have this problem also....it seems intermittant...I thought it was a known bug in BETA that was supposedly fixed(I dont remember where i read this though so dunno if it's true)...I did experience it when I played in BETA but my perception is that it was worse than what I experience now in live, my perception is also that in BETA it seemed to get better after I thought(again don't remeber for sure) it was anounced to be fixed.

As I said above, in BETA is was worse...now when it happens it seems if I manouver to get more directly behind the ship then the hits will start landing...even though I dont need to get right at 6oclock...its seems the problem happens more when firing directly from above which would point to it being the invulnerablity bug????

"It clearly shows how a 1.7 GHz centrino is faster than a 2.6 GHz pentium 4"

1) That is a comparison betweenIntel® Pentium® M Processor 1.70 GHz (your processor) and Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor – M 2.60 GHz

Did you noticethe word Mobile?

If you used thosebenchmarkswhen you bought your notebook and you thought that your processor will be faster than a rustyIntel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3Ghz with HT Technology then come to reality and understand that you made a mistake.

2) I described in my posts above the single acceptablefiring mode in JTL.

You can talk about assigning dynamic routes based on dog-fighting priorities andabout ping times and geographical server positions and about the cable guy and his girlfriend and you can even ask devs to use notebooks for their servers but guess what:

In a dog fight Ican spam 4-5 commands/sec, you can do it also that meansonechange every 100 ms, lets assume they have godly servers so they can compute the changes in 0 ms but our ping time is at least 30-90ms(mine) and 30-90ms(yours) so understand this:

You cannot use high skilled single shots in a dog fight in JTL.

Devs please don't change the fire/damage algorithm! (because you just can't).

Peace.

Interesting developement:

I was flying around exploring for a while last night, and I
noticed a droid fighter for the first time. Well, I know what
to do with new things:
Blow them up!

My targeting was spot on. Dead center in the lead-recticle.

So, I turned my attention on some RSF ships near by. The targeting
had the normal behind-the-recticle problem.

I'm not entirely sure what this means in the grand scheme of things.
This is actually the reverse of what I would expect seeing how fast
and nimble the droid fighters are.

Oh, and the targeting was only on-recticle for the Tier 1 ships. The
Tier 2's targeted like normal for me.

I've been zapping away at Z95 in the asteroids around Tatooine in my nooby Syck, I've killed around 50K XP worth of 'em too! Most of the time, its fine no problem, I can take 'em down very quickly, but sometimes, well the force seems to be unusally strong in those pirates! I've blasted away at some for ages, disabling them eventually and then sat a couple of ship lengths behind them, blasting shots right up their exhuast port, to no effect... In those situations I learnt it best to try and run away, terribly fast... (actually impossible in my Syck!:smileyvery-happy

Although I can't be certain, I very strongly believeit happens to me morewhen there are more player ships present. Which fits the bill of it being a (insurmountable) problem of the server syncing with *multiple* clients.

WellI thought I had found the problem but I'm back to square one.

On election night, my ship was going very well, 90% of my shots that landed dealt damage, and the frequent disconnects I've been getting since JTL/Pub 11 on the ground game stopped happening. The only difference was I had disabled Google Desktop on my machine before starting SWG.

But last night it was real bad, I had many targets that just wouldn't die or get a single scratch,I got the client/server resync/warpong stuff a lot, as described in so many posts above, and my Google Desktop was also disabled. So my theory was bogus.

I'm thinking more and more that latency is the main factor and the game is not compensating enough for it. Latency cannot be eliminated, but how the client and server talk can be changed to reduce the effects of latency, i.e. having the server trust what the client says a little more. I use a very fast cable modem connection, but I live in an upper class building in the financial district of Manhattan where almost everyone is cabled for the Internet with Time Warner, I imagine our route is suffering from severe latency somehow even though my ground game ping is below 200 ms (bad enough) and I get a direct ping using tracert or pathping between 80-90 ms.

This is still my #1 issue and I posted accordingly in our Pilot correspondent's thread. Any direct or indirect response from the devs would be appreciated.

Yeah, I hear ya... those droid fighters are often the ships that cause these hits-that-deal-no-damage the most as well...

I'll have to take a second look at this. I thought my problem was firing too much with undercharged low end guns (Level 1 everything)against some nice Tier 2 shields that regenerated faster than I could damage them. Does a low capacitor charge = lower damage?

ActiveNick, have you called tech support to see what they have to say? The reason I ask is your hardware may not be supported. I can tell you for a fact that at the game companies I've worked for have never tested on laptops. They work or they don't,and that's the sad simple truth. Sorry you're so frustrated and unable to play.
