The X-Wing was never meant to be a front-line fighter. In the time of ANH it was already nearing its sunset period (at least for the original version) - only non-stock retrofits from stolen or "appropriated" equipment kept the damnedable things competitive.

Depends on which source you quote. The radio drama calls the X-wing an outdated fighter, but every other major source calls it a marvel--a fairly modern craft the Rebels only had because of the defection of the Incom team which outclassed the Seinar fighters.
I wouldn't read too much into a radio drama. Drama in general spells innaccuracy. From official sources, the X-wings they used during the Battle of Yavin were the prototypes they had stolen from the Incom Coprorations facility. The X-wing was actually a cutting edge design during the Battle of Yavin and the reason why the Empire didn't utilise them was because they gave too much independance to the pilot, i.e Life support which could keep a person going for a week and a hyperdrive.
It is also worthwhile to note that the x-wings we see throughout the Starwars universe's chronology, i.e BOY to the NJO era differ greatly. Where the general layout and looks of the fighter are the same, the inner tech of the ships would be far different.

ie X wing version flown in NJO has 2 launch tubes totalling 8 protons instead of 2 totalling 4 with better sheilding
I don't know that I'd compare the X-Wing to the F-14. The F/A-18 seems a better match, it's a multi-role craft where the F-14 is pure anti-fighter. A-Wings would probably be the F-16. I suppose the Y-Wing would be the A-6 Intruder, and the B-Wing HAS to be the Warthog...

It's a strike fighter, pure and simple - best equatable to the F-14. Heavy firepower capacity, decent maneuverability, but either is a flying coffin in a dogfight with a true interceptor airframe.
The only reason Luke flew one was because he was operating with a /godmode cheat as a result of being a pivotal and undisposable character. Note a lot of people who flew with him died quickly and violently as a result of redshirtitis. He could've flown a goddamned barge with a jerry-rigged CDEF as a main weapon and survived head-on engagements with ISDs.
