Why would there be an RE level if they were supposed to match? The cert level would have covered both nicely.

HEY! Just drop it! HE SAYS THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO MATCH!

They're supposed to match.

According to...what?

The loot item. I've got a number of loot components that have a cert level of X and an RE level of Y.

They don't necessarily need to be the same. It can really throw you for a loop at times.

Pardon me, but why are you telling me this? You didn't exactly answer my question, it looks more like you answered some question noone asked,

Yeah, misread the question. Sue me, I'm human.

Our own TomoRainer covered it quite nicely in his guide to REing.

"There are a number of loot items whose certification level differs from their RE level, so make sure that, when assembling your parts, you're sure all the RE levels match. (Notable items where the cert and RE levels differ: a level 10 capacitor with RE level 5; level 4 cap with RE level 5; level 4 engine with RE level 2; level 10 droid interfaces with level 3 or 1 RE; level 7 DI with level 5 or 3 or 1 RE. There are plenty of others.)"

"The certification level of the first component in the tool will be used to determine the final product's cert level. Thanks to Sar-larid for the confirmation. As he notes, you're probably going to want to use the lowest-level cert item for this, as I can't think of a case where you'd want to restrict yourself from using an item at the lowest possible level."

I have an un-reversed starmap shield that is RE Level 7... and I've seen another.

You have yet to provide any rational explanation why the degree of difficulty to reverse-engineer a component should be related in any way to the skill required to USE the component. It's a lot easier to drive a car (oruse a television set)than to build it.

Saying "it's supposed to be" a particular way is meaningless in light of the fact that the existing parts contradict your assertion. You may feel it ought to be that way, sorry to inform you that reality is not obligated to conform to your opinions.

The human brain is "supposed to be" capable of rational thought, but every time I read a post like yours I see that what is and what's "supposed to be" are two very different things.

Don't worry about it, Darth. Until he comes up with a counterargument to defeat my question about the existance of RE levels in the first place, I'm going to assume that I won that debate.

He could be right, but really the only way to tell would either to get a dev to confirm/deny or to break into SOE and take a look at their design documents.

Another line of argument is that if you are able to make better equipment (Level 7 F/B shield w/ Level 2 mass/energy) than the devs intended, SOE would have screamed "Exploit!" banned people and fixed the bug already.

Second, I feel (My opinion only) that having a difference of more than 1 level would be greatly unbalancing. So, unless someone has seen a difference of greater than +/-1, I'm betting this is by design.

To the person who thinks the values should match: Bug it, it's not by design they'll prioritize it and fix it in the order that it deserves to be fixed in. If not, some SOE dev will close the bug and you'll never know.

You think they shouldn't match.

I think they should.

To each, his own.

And Treena, you have no argument as to why the re and cert levels SHOULDN'T match. so until you answer that, I have no further comments

It doesn't matter if they SHOULD.

They DON'T - accept it, because what you think "should be" doesn't matter.

why does my opinion matter? O_o

theres no word as to whether or not they are or are not supposed to have some varation, so what i said was speculative anyway. What's the big deal :/

They shouldn't always match because of the existance of an RE Level stat. The fact that they felt the need to code for an extra stat telling you the RE level of the item is proof that they don't have to match. If they were always supposed to match up, the RE Level stat would not exist, since you would simply need to compare cert levels.

how would you know if it's RE'd or not if they didnt have an RE level?

also, this variation did not happen in beta. it only started a few months back.

WRONG. I was a shipwright in Beta, I saw plenty of components whose RE level did not match the cert - especially droid interfaces.

You just can't admit that you're wrong, the funny thing is you're trying to convince us that you're the only one who knows the "truth".
