Thread: Speed vs. YPR
Indeed, both setups are viable, as long as the pilot uses the correct tactics with that setup.
This is just my opinion, and my experience/flying style, but I have always found speed to be thebetter optionagainst the AI, if you have to make a choice. If you have an engine that gives you both, so much the better. In my personal experience, an engine that allows you to travel around 1200 top speed is enough, and much more than that can actually start to hurt you when fighting slower ships, like the B-wing/Y-wing.
As far as one on one PvP goes, if you want to take the speed route, I honestly feel that your choice of ships becomes much more limited than if you go the PYR route. The standard X-wing might be able to pull off a speed setup and still be viable, but honestly I think you need a ship that is 150k+ mass to really make it a viable option in PvP. The reason being, if you want to run a speed setup for PvP, then by default, you *must* make certain that you are considerably faster than your opponent, or your speed advantage will be nullified. Considerably is minimum of 250, but preferrably 300+ unboosted, 500+ boosted, otherwise, it's just not enough, and if your opponent is a good shot, you will find out just how not enough that is. This is not easy to do, as there are many folks that have engines with good to high PYR's that allow them to run at 1400+ with EO4. To put this in perspective, the top end crafted mark V in a Vaksai will yield you somewhere around 1680, if you have the reactor to run EO4...if not, you're better off using a PYR.
In conclusion, in PvE, either option is totally viable. Having a 1.2, or even 1.1 is *enough* to outperform the AI, and any ship is viable for either option. 1v1 PvP, if you are not a *lot* faster than your opponent, you're probably toast using a speed setup.
Now large scale PvP...I think an argument can definitely be made that speed *could be* the better choice, unless you have one of those aforementioned engines that put you at 1400+ with high PYR, where you already have both worlds.
Sorry if I rambled a bit, I am tired...I am afraid to revise this post, as I might be horrified at what I wrote

The hit box on the RG TIE so is a factor. A ship shouldn't be so hard to hit that only missiles will kill it. Hitbox should be more or less same size as the ship it's on, not a micro fraction of it![]()
I agree 100% And I hold my breath for the day the devs fix it so I can fly her and not get flack for it.
I won't activly PVP in her anymore because of that. If there is an event I take my Oppressor. But I do farm in DS in my RGI because it's quicker for me. Once the hitbox is fixed I'll get to roll my Red once again
AllI'm saying is that it's not the "I Win" PVP ship that most people think it is.The only "I Win" button in space is Good Piloting.

I'm fighting in my Heavy X with a low to mid 80s YPR and there sure as heck ain't no such thing as too much YPR.
Indeed there isn't and in responce to the guy who posted before you Coran...your ship has 80 k mass to play with so a lvl 10 engine is more than pheasable. I and other A-wing pilots have between 64-66k mass to play with. Get a lvl 10 engine in one of these ships and keep it semi functional and I'll be impressed. In fact, you're imperial, stick it in a TIE Advanced and get some pvp kills without deaths and then I'll worship you. Thing is, I know that short of anything which has been nerfed in the past..a lvl 10 engine these days is just not pheasable on a 66k mass ship without sacrificing somthing important, like the pilot seat.
I kind of think you're wasting mass with a mk IV shield too. The RG TIE's hitbox is so miniscule that in pve, you simply won't get hit and in pvp, even a good pilot would have to pound you several times over to score a valid hit. I'd go down to a mk III and stick in a lvl 7 gun if I were you. They offer 'ok' damage and higher refire rate than a lvl 8 even.

The hitbox on the RGI isn't even a factor anymore. One proton lock and that's all she wrote. For the most part, unless I am overwhelmed, they can't get a lock. But if I am out numbered I can only avoid a lock on for so long. I can usually shunt of a M2 IR but anything bigger than that and my ships is really pretty red scrap.
And don't think I haven't tried to get that level 10 in my advanced. She does fit but there isn't room for anything but the cup holder. No armor, no shields, no booster, crafted cap, crafted DI, RE'd lvl 6 gun, crafted 800 mass 11k gen reactor, chaf launcher for those pesky protons. I call her the Suicide Slider. I'm still trying to figure a way to cram an IR launcher in her :-)
She does well in PVP and can take a JSF. But for the most part she is just used for funwhen I want to leave the RGI at home. One of these days I'll learn how to fly an Oppressor and give my lvl 10 engine a propor home.

I managed to take a RG the other night with my blasters. I then went for him again, but couldn't manouver him so that I could hit his top. He eventually got the better of me with 2 lucky hits as I had 20+ on him, maybe even more. He then went on to /tell me that he was a space God as I couldn't kill him in all the hits I got on him. He then refused to accept that his ship was bugged and that he couldn't care even if it was. This is the sort of person flying the RG that gives it a bad name. It's a cool ship, the imps need some colourand once it's fixed, I hope we get to see a lot more of them as I enjoy blowing them up. But he really rubbed me up the wrong way with his disregard of a pilots honour.
I've always been very proud of the pilot community. For the most part pilots are honorable, knowledgable, helpfull, and above all else have respect and class. But there are always a few who act like 14 year old ebay-jedi account holders

But there are always a few who act like 14 year old ebay-jedi account holdersThey are usually only 4xxx and fly one of the "uber" RotW ships. And if you do see them in DS chances are they got their "ace" status riding shotgun in an MP or POB ship. Imp/Reb/Freelance as soon as I run across one of these "pilots" they are quickly added to my ignore list.
I don't ignore them usually. They get bored after a while anyway.
